In a snippet from a support letter for Howard Dean, Martin Sheen writes this:
Dear Friend,
Please do something after reading this email. Do what you can, but please do something.
A few days ago Howard Dean did something we haven’t seen in our country in decades.
He called on all of the American people to participate again in our common future.
Decades? My, my how short our memory is, Martin.
During his 2002 State of the Union address, President George W. Bush called upon every American to get involved in strengthening America’s communities and sharing America’s compassion around the world. He called on each of us to dedicate at least two years over the course of our lives to the service of others. He included all Americans because everyone can do something, and he created the USA Freedom Corps to help all Americans to answer his call.
In January 2003, President George W. Bush created the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation. The mission of the council is to recognize and encourage outstanding volunteer service and civic participation by individuals, schools, and organizations and thereby encourage more such activity, especially on the part of America’s youth.
The Rewards for Justice Program is one of the most valuable U.S. Government assets in the fight against international terrorism. Established by the 1984 Act to Combat International Terrorism, Public Law 98-533, the Program is administered by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Diplomatic Security. Calling on American citizens everywhere to be vigilant and aware of potential threats around them.
These are just a sampling of a few programs put into place under the George W. Bush Administration that calls on American citizens to participate and be an active part in our country’s common future. For Martin Sheen to say that Howard Dean’s call for participation is some brand new campaign that this country hasnt’ seen in decades is completely overlooking the great acts of patriotic American citizens since 911 to pull together and rally for our country, it’s flag, it’s citizens and it’s security.
