Hollywood vs. Washington

The Scoop @ MSNBC

Hollywood is going up against Washington.

Famed director Sidney Lumet is shooting a film for HBO called “Strip Search” that will look into the abuses of people’s civil rights since 9/11, says a source familiar with the project.

Glenn Close, Ellen Barkin and Maggie Gyllenhaal are among the stars of the show, which will run in three parts and will probably air this fall.

“It’s inspired by real life incidents, examples of a sort of McCarthyism that has existed since the attacks,” says the insider. “It’s about people who’ve been punished for saying and thinking things in a country where there’s supposed to be freedom of speech and thought. There’s no doubt that it will be controversial, given the level of emotions on this subject.”

The idea that everyone has the right to freely speak their mind in this country – - however, sometimes the opinions expressed meet up with public criticism…but that does not constitute “McCarthyism” nor does it define an infringement on their freedom of speech. It goes both ways – - you have the right to say it, I have the right to respond, good or bad.

It’ll be interested to see how they portray the people who have been ‘punished for saying and thinking things’ – - is this going to be a documentary? Are they going to use actual events? In which case, I’m curious to know who has really been punished? Arrested? Persecuted? I do suppose, however, that they will use ‘imaginary’ events to get their point across – - and of course, making seem a whole lot worse than the facts of reality.
