Robbins spewed his vile: “I would suggest that we send some of those people over there. I would love to see a Sergeant O’Reilly in the armed forces. And a Lieutenant Limbaugh. Lieutenant Limbaugh would be beautiful thing to see. These guys have the opportunity a lot of, most of these guys that were such advocates of this war had the opportunity during Vietnam to serve their country and pussied out. And here’s a perfect opportunity for them to undo that shameful past and to enlist and go over and walk it like they talk it.”
Maher quipped: “So you want fat, middle-aged men fighting for America?”
Robbins added cops to the list of those he insulted: “Hey, you know, the police departments, you know.”
Limbaugh was born in 1951 and O’Reilly in 1949, making both well over age 50 and way too old for any military service.
Maybe Tim Robbins should join the list of enlistees since he’s so concerned about our soldiers over in Iraq?
I have nothing but respect for the men and women who are in service to our country. I have nothing but compassion for their families who have to live through this ordeal. But do not forget that ours is a voluntary military. No one has been drafted to serve this country – - that decision was made by each and every soldier, of their own free will. I am grateful for their service – more than I can possibly explain. However, a soldier knows, going in, what the risks are for war. It’s unfortunate that it’s gone on for so long – - but the problems in the Middle East are not going to dissapear overnight…or over a few months. To expect decades of turmoil and tyranny to go *poof* after a few short battles is idealistic, at the very best.
Does Tim suggest that we leave Iraq now? Would he, if he could, pull the troops completely out of Iraq to leave that country fester in it’s instability and uncertainty? The thing I like most about GW is that he is willing to go the distance and learn from our own history and not pull out of the country too earl – and he has the judgement and courage to stick with it. Unfortunate for the troops who are there – - but it is what they signed up for. Maybe not specifically – - however, when I take a job, I weigh the pros and cons of it all and then make a decision as to whether or not I can commit to the work, potential or actual.
It’s a noble job, and one of honour – outshining, by far, a less noble position such as Hollywood Actor/Pundit.
