Earthquake in Iran

Iran Quake Death Toll Could Reach 30,000

TEHRAN – The death toll from the earthquake that devastated the southeastern Iranian city of Bam on Friday could reach 30,000, an official from the provincial government said on Sunday. “I believe the toll will reach 30,000,” the official from the office of the governor of Kerman province where Bam is situated said. “Some outlying villages are even more badly damaged than Bam, they are 100 percent destroyed,” he added.

What a horrendous thing to happen in any country. I’ve been doing my daily new reads and blog reads this morning – and I’m truly shocked at the heartlessness of some of the comments left regarding this story.

…”No one deserves it more…”
…”Allah is pissed off….”
…”Who needs war when you have God on your side?…”
…”As far as I’m concered Dubya can send aid in the form of B52s and blow up everything that didn’t fall down.”

This earthquake isn’t “Poetic Justice”. It’s a natural disaster that took the lives of 30,000 people – - I cannot even begin to imagine the effects if something like this had happened in the USA. It was an earthquake – not an act of war. There was nothing political about it – nothing to gain. The devestation left behind.

We are not at war with Iran – we have nothing against it’s people. We may not agree with the policy of their government, or the ways of their world – but I, for one, wouldn’t wish this upon any country. I think the US should be the first in line sending aid and support – - what better way than to take such steps to show that we are truly interested in the rebuilding of alliances? War and politics aside, our compassion should still remain.

  1. We are sending aid; I read in the paper a little while ago that we already had something like 450,000 lbs (or tons, I’m absent-minded) of supplies on their way. This was a horrible tragedy; it’s too bad people can’t seem to separate individuals from their country. It would save us a lot of trouble if the Shah was one of the casualties, but fate doesn’t work that way and this was a disaster that shouldn’t be wished on anyone or even revelled in. Those people are as bad as the ones who danced in the streets after 911.

  2. Yes the USA was first on the scene with aid. Where are their Muslim brothers with all the oil wealth? True to form the Iranian mullas said that our aid relief will not change the political situation.
To bad they can see beyond their own prejudices.

  3. i thought it was determined long ago that no one was really “dancing int the streets” after 911. it was propaganda to enrage the US even further.

  4. ? Yo, coffee, they WERE dancing in the streets of Hebron and Gaza City.

The US is sending more aid to Iran than anyother source. The Iranian government may not notice but the people on the street will.

  5. Well, as far as enraging Americans even further, it did indeed work. And from what I understand, that did indeed happen — I’ve heard that the dancers in question were paid off, but I still say that they had a choice. They didn’t HAVE to take the money.

In other words, whatever the motivation or reason, it still happened, it didn’t have to, and hopefully it will never happen again.

  6. Hey look at this we got a pot stirrer. Not like this has not been said before. Please if you can not discuss with out slamming, swearing etc. don’t bother.
