Happy New Year

What does ‘Auld Lang Syne’ mean?

If you are anywhere in the English-speaking world Wednesday evening around midnight, chances are you’re going to hear the strains of “Auld Lang Syne.”

Which is curious, since neither auld, lang nor syne seem to have much to do with English.

In truth, “Auld Lang Syne” is a traditional Scottish song, written in Scots, the language used in the country prior to its union with England in 1707. Versions of it were passed down through generations until the words were recorded by poet Robert Burns.

So what does it mean? Just what are New Year’s revelers saying at the stroke of midnight?

  6. Oh geez, as an American of Scottish ancestry I was cringing at how bad this article was going to be after reading the bit about “Scots being the language they spoke before the english”, but it turned out ok I guess. I’ve seen worse. At least this guy didn’t call them the Scotch. Considering all the great things the Scottish have done in the Americas you’d think they’d get a little more recognition. Anyway happy Hogmanay, and may a tall stranger be the first to enter your home this year.
