Call for Blood

Red Cross Dangerously low on blood, money

The American Red Cross disaster fund is running a deficit and its blood supply is dangerously low, President Marsha Johnson Evans said Wednesday in a plea for donations.

“There is no fallback option if the Red Cross isn’t there to deliver and no government safety net — we’re it,” Evans said in a speech at the National Press Club.

It’s such an easy thing to do – - and so helpful to your community and humankind. I remember when the Red Cross was running over with blood donations immediately after 9/11. Sadly, the victims of 9/11 did not require the use of those generous donations. However, part of being a prepared nation and society is being proactive, instead of reactive.

Think about giving blood this week – Together We Prepare

  1. I have no problem donating blood, as it is my duty..what I have a problem with is the thought of the donations the RC received since 9/11 and all of the wasted blood due to poor management. I also keep thinking of the fact that they were going to keep 20% off the top of the donations people gave for the 9/11 fund.

  2. I don’t like needles (call me a whimp if you must), but taking along a newspaper to read makes the time pass a bit faster. The first couple of times I gave blood I had nothing better to do than sit there and think about my blood being siphoned out. Now, at least, I can distract myself with something else.
