John On Rap

‘I’m fascinated by Hip-Hop,” says John Kerry

“I’m fascinated by rap and by hip-hop. I think there’s a lot of poetry in it. There’s a lot of anger, a lot of social energy in it. And I think you’d better listen to it pretty carefully, ’cause it’s important.” said John Kerry during an MTV Choose or Lose forum.

And just how much rap has John Kerry listened to? How many rap cds has he purchased for his music collection?

When questioned about offensive rap lyrics, Kerry said, “I think there is a line you draw between government intervention and the right of speech and the right for people to express themselves, but do I think there are standards of decency in that? Yes, I do. Do I think that sometimes some lyrics in some songs have stepped over what I consider to be a reasonable line? Yeah, I do. I think when you start talking about killing cops or something like that, it bothers me.”

He doesn’t approve of lyrics about killing cops, but he didn’t mind attending a meeting where the discussion centered around assassinating political figures.

Stating there is a line to be drawn where offensive rap lyrics are concerned and then to defend the first amendment – - that seems more than a little contradictory to me.

Either he supports the first amendment for all the good and bad that entails and believes they have a right to rap about whatever they want – - or he wants to draw a “reasonable line” for those rap artists who use offensive lyrics and limit their first amendment right.

He can’t have it both ways.

“I’m still listening because I know that it’s a reflection of the street and it’s a reflection of life, and I understand all that. I’m not for the government censoring or stepping in. But I don’t think it’s inappropriate occasionally to talk about what you think is a standard or what you think is a value that is worth trying to live up to.”

What does that even mean?

  1. I have officially stopped trying to figure out what this man means!

  2. Senator Kerry doesn’t give a damn about Rap or hip-hop! The guy is 60. If there is a 60 year old man who says he is interested in rap or Hip-hop he is either lying or he owns a record company.

He’s trying to get the 18-30 crowd to think he’s cool so they’ll vote for him.

How in the world would this man understand life on the street? Even when he was protesting the war in Vietnam he was too much of a prema dona to camp… no he stayed at a friend’s house in Georgetown with maid service…!? He is so out of touch with real people that he has to invent things like this to make him look interesting… geez, the man’s a walking corpse. no matter what he does he will not look interesting.

  4. A crazy old fart trying to be hip. I tried to like this guy but I just can’t.

  5. you didn’t see him (well, hear him anyway), playing rap music at his speechs, he played vietnam era music. jimmy hendrix and the like… if he was so facinated by rap, why doesn’t he play it at his speeches? I think he is afraid he will be censored by the FCC, LOL!
