WWII Vets Honored

WWII Vets Get Memorial, Finally

America dedicated a memorial Saturday to the fast-thinning ranks of World War II veterans, a poignant last hurrah drawing together tens of thousands of old soldiers, sailors and heroes of the home front.

These were average men and women who lived in extraordinary times. No matter the danger or hardship, they responded with exceptional bravery
~Former President Bush

President Bush spoke at the World War II Memorial Dedication service, commenting on Americans’ need to stick together and stand tall no matter the enemy’s strength.

On the eve of the dedication of the war monument, a World War II veteran shares a harrowing story with Jim Stewart .

Thanking Veterans, old and new.

  3. The Fighting Kentuckian

This brings tears to my eyes, especially now. My father, who passed on this last week, was in the Navy. He joined at the age of nineteen. He has told me many stories of those days and where he was when Pearl was attacked. He never saw actual combat but he did his part here in the States. He helped to keep the birds in the air. To these people we owe much. And I am glad to see them finally honored. It is too bad that so many of them did not live to see this. But it is good to have their memories honored. It is very apt indeed. Lest we forget.

  4. My deepest sympathies FK, on the passing of your father… He served, doesn’t matter in what capacity, he served… and he and those like him now have a place of honor among the honorable… but they always have and even though the memorial is wonderful, we didn’t need a memorial to tell us this, but it is about time…

My Father in-law, God rest his soul, while in the Marines he stormed the beach of Iwo Jima, and fought bravely, even after being stabbed in the back, he was able to take a trench on his own after his his entire platoon was killed by a single bomb… this memorial is for him… in my eyes anyway… and for all those who gave for freedom. by the way he lived to be 71 and had a great life…
thanks to your father FK, he will now always be honored… Respectfully. madbarr.

  5. The Fighting Kentuckian

Thank you, madbarr. I DO appreciate that. And I agree with you 100%. The memorial if beautiful, but the true memorial lives in all the generations that have known freedom because of their sacrfice wether it be life, limb, or time away from family and home.

  6. If you will all endulge me I wrote a poem about that exact subject FK,

Your Time, Your Blood, Your Sweat, and Your Tears

Thank you Soldier, Sailor, Men who fly
for giving your all without asking why.

Your Time you gave up without even a thought
away from your family and Homestead plot.

Your blood you gave freely while locked in battle,
until you heard Tyrannies last death rattle.

Your sweat you gave was in no short supply,
to ensure that freedom’s flag forever will fly.

Your tears that fell were not in vain,
for as you hear that lone trumpet refrain,
It signals that some fell for their nations call,
to ensure that freedom is shared by us all.

  7. The Fighting Kentuckian

I did enjoy. Those words say much and I think everyone needs to read them. And give deep thought to what they say as you have. Thanks again.
