But it would be a mistake to think of Laura Bush as a latter-day Mamie Eisenhower, who once said, “Ike runs the country; I turn the pork chops.” The First Lady has views of her own, and just before jetting off to Florida with the President last week, she sat down in her East Wing office to speak with TIME’s Matthew Cooper about a wide range of topics, including gay marriage, stem-cell research and how she deals with criticism of her husband.
This is a good interview with Laura Bush. Is it like the shouting matches that Heinz-Kerry gets involved in? Definitely not. Not one time did Laura tell anyone to “shove it”.

I believe that Laura Bush is the RNC’S best kept secret. If she were to speak out more, her classiness and elegance (as a First Lady should have) would shine through. She does not carry herself as a “pork chop flipper” She is confident in herself and does not have to say I am or am not the little woman at home and certainly does not need to tell people to shove it. I think she is the most elegant first lady we have had in a while. I know that GW knows this and knows what a gem he has in her!
I just love her! I cannot wait to hear her speak this week.
