Kerry Kind Media?

New Study Suggests Some Media Favored Kerry in First Two Weeks of October

A new study for the non-partisan Project for Excellence in Journalism suggests that in the first two weeks of October, during the period of the presidential debates, George W. Bush received much more unfavorable coverage from some media than John Kerry.

In the limited sample more than half of all Bush stories were negative in tone, during this period. One-quarter of all Kerry stories were negative, according to the study.

“This is the mirror image of what happened four years ago,” the report states, when Bush benefited from coverage in the same debate period, enjoying twice as many positive stories as Al Gore.

This raises the question of how much the results have to do simply with one candidate doing especially well in the debates, plus the liabilities of the incumbent, who receives negative coverage not just for performance on the stump but also for the policies of his administration.

The four newspapers in the study:
Miami Herald
New York Times
Washington Post
Columbus Dispatch

The cable channels specific shows:
CNN – Aaron Brown
FOX – Brit Hume
PBS – News Hour

The study also included:
CBS “The Early Show”
ABC “Good Morning America”
NBC “Today Show”
CBS Nightly News
ABC Nightly News
NBC Nightly News

This study is hardly conclusive, but brings up some interesting points about the upcoming election in contrast to the election of 2000 when dealing with mainstream media and how they focus more on campaign dynamics and not nearly enough on the issues.

  1. I have noticed this too. On most channels, the post debate panels were made up entirely of Democrats. On Fox News, However, the panel was made up of two democrats and two conservitives. The media coverage has blatantly favored Kerry and damn near ran his campaigne for him.

I said in an earlier post that the “elite”(as some would like to call it) media is basically another extension of the DNC. Has Kerry ever been asked a tough question about his lackluster military record? How come CBS tried to influence the outcome by putting out a story based on forged documents? How is it that Kitty Kelley gets three days on the today show but John O’neil is offered no time?

These are just a few examples of the media bias. Until they take it down a notch, their ratings will continue to decline.

  2. Who are you kidding Snatch? The only reason Kerry received favourable attention from the media was because he won all three debates hands down. There is just more positive things to say about Kerry and his campaign of hope, of course Bush will get negative stories his whole campaign is negative, he is trying to scare the whole country. If the media has been soft with any candidate it’s Bush. While the media may not be asking really tough questions about Kerry’s valiant service during Vietnam they also haven’t been holding Bush’s feet to the fire on anything from 9/11 all the way to Iraq this guy has been given a free pass.

  3. I beg to differ, Alias. First of all, the media has favored Kerry even BEFORE the debates. Loooooong Before in fact…memo gate was before the debates if I recall.

Second, Bush has been crucified over Iraq by you liberals from the get go.

Third, why in the hell should Bush have to answer for 9/11? He did not fly those planes into our buildings killing 3000 Americans. You need to stop blaming Bush and start blaming the terrorists that would just as soon slit your throat as look at you. Cruel, yes, but thats the reality of the situation.

  4. Let me just say this right now…….

If you’re for Bush or not, anybody that has two eyes cannot try to denie that there is a media bias and that the liberal media have given Bush a pass. If that is true, then why was CBS planning on running this 18 month old story two days before he election, only the NYT beat them to it.

  5. We are all too biased to accurately determine the bias in the media?

  6. Snatch it’s kind of funny that you think there is a liberal media. Unless your talking about AirAmerica which is the only liberal news source I can find.

  7. CNN did not get dubbed “Clinton News Network” out of thin air. You need to get out more, Alias. Peter Jennings(your fellow Canadian) is a proud liberal and it shows in his broadcasts.

Same with Brokaw, Rather, Couric, Lauer, Sawyer, Gibson, Walters, Geraldo and the rest. Pay attention and you’ll see what I’m talking about.

  8. I wasn’t counting Canadian media we’ve got tons of em. Good ol’truth seeking Canadian media. CNN is only dubbed that because they aren’t blatently right wing like Fox it’s funny you call a middle of the road network liberal.

  9. Alias, if you label CNN a “rightwing newstation” you are lost in the fog of the naive.

If you don’t like conservitive ideology, fine. You’re entiltled to your opinion but don’t deny that which stares you right in the face.

  10. didn’t say it was right wing I said it was middle of the road, mainstream if you will. In fact I said unlike Fox it is NOT blatently right wing.

  11. The media has always gone after the negative aspects of life, it works because it draws in ratings.

  12. Whatever. You say “black” I say “white”

  13. you mean “right,” right?

  14. I’m on the right side of the fence if thats what you mean Sabor.

  15. I am on neither side, i don’t identify with either party.

They both lie and cheat and for what, your vote

  16. So who should be surprised? not me im rather leary of the liberal left-wing news media they are always urging voters to support the demacratic canadate or to support the most ultraliberal voter referendoms just look and see they will be urging us all to vote for KERRY/EDWARDS on november 2nd we should vote as we should and not what the left-wing news media wants:eek:

  17. I am a bit surprised about Brit Hume. I don’t see it, but I just had this conversation last week. I still respect his viewpoints and I think he does a great job of “hiding” his bias if in fact he has any.

  18. Brit Hume always looks like he just climbed out of bed. All grumpy. He’s cool though.

  19. Reilly, you gonna drop any more collumns tonight?

  20. CNN is the Communist News Network and the only reason is that becuase the liberal news media are all a bunch of socialists who always favor socialists canadates and kerry is a confiermed socialist and you cant get much worse then these reptiles i mean they crawl under the bellies of snakes but still need a step ladder just look at DAN RATHER and 60 minutes and the rest of the liberal lie a minute press and talking heads:razz:

  21. Snowy Egret-I could not agree with you more

  22. See, this is why I am very insistent on seeing the major source (if, of course, one is available, in all fairness). Because I need to consider it before I can take it at face value, thanks to this sort of bias.
