Broward County – Can You Believe it?

By: Lisa On: Oct/28/04 - 12 Comments

Long lines, busy signals fuel voting frustration in Broward

The Broward County Supervisor of Elections Office pointed a finger at the U.S. Postal Service on Tuesday for nearly 60,000 missing absentee ballots, but took the blame for having a phone system that was being overwhelmed by calls from frustrated voters.

Sixty Thousand!! You would THINK that after the 2000 elections – these guys would have made sure they were doubly prepared for 2004. They’ve had four years to prepare!

Incompetent is really the only word that springs to mind.

When all else fails, blame the mailman. But in seriousness..how do we know they don’t have the ballots? With all the talk of trying to challenge the election, how do we know?

Sounds like the postal worker’s union might have engaged in a little job action.

I know Lisa, but really now, come on! 600 okay, but 60,000? And they just figured it out 1 week before the election? My parents have had their absentee ballots since labor day or 1 week after. I should have said had, as they mailed them back the first week of October.

Walter- I hope that was a joke. It is all good and well to crack jokes, but lets not blame people that may never have touched the ballots.

LOL, when I first read the last line I saw it as, “Impotent” not “incompetent.” But I won’t go there.

We mail our ballots here, and there is no way of a postal worker of knowing if your dem or republican – it’s not valid unless signed and sealed on the back. So I don’t know if hoarding them would help either side…however, they do have our voter reg number on the back, too, I think – so if someone got a hold of the list of reg dems vs. repubs, and their associated numbers, that may be another story. I am just not sure.
