Liberal Teacher Kicks GOP Student For T-Shirt

By: Chris On: Oct/31/04 - 76 Comments

Colo. Teacher Sorry for Kicking Student

DURANGO, Colo. – A part-time college instructor has apologized for kicking a student because he was wearing a Republican shirt.

Fort Lewis College student Mark O’Donnell said he was showing people his College Republicans sweat shirt, which said “Work for us now … or work for us later,” when Maria Spero kicked him in the leg at an off-campus restaurant.

Spero, a visiting instructor of modern languages, apologized to O’Donnell in a letter dated Oct. 29.

“I acted entirely inappropriately by kicking you, giving vent to a thoughtless knee-jerk political reaction that should never have happened,” she wrote. “Before the incident, I did not know you and that you are a Fort Lewis student.”

O’Donnell said the apology wasn’t enough and he plans to file a complaint with the college.

Well isn’t this just amazing? Assault because of a t-shirt with a political statement the teacher did not like. Now.. analyzing this..

1. She wasn’t the teacher of the student.
2. She kicked him off campus and in a restaurant.
3. She didn’t even know him.

Now I haven’t seen the police report. I don’t know if she was arrested (I hope she was!).. but I wonder if a guy went up to a woman and kicked her because of a statement on her t-shirt if he would be getting what appears to be the same treatment. Oh and the apology letter is meant to make it all better??

This is not someone I want working in an educational institution. Freedom of thought, freedom of speech (Not Consequence Free) are principals we want in colleges. No one should be physcially abused just because they wear a political t-shirt. I hope she looses her job and I urge you all to send in an email to the Fort Lewis College. Zero Tolerance laws go both ways.. if they apply to students they should apply to teachers.

I don’t believe she should be fired. It’s petty, it didn’t hurt the kid. I agree what she did was stupid and immature. Definitely something a teacher of all people shouldn’t be doing.

However, she should be punished and that’s all.

Gary, what if the kid had been wearing a pro-Kerry sweatshirt and she had been a Republican? Would you still say that? Just asking.

I disagree with you Gary. She is there to teach the students and not kick them. Would this letter have been written had he not been a student? I would say the same thing if the parties were reversed. Just teach the kids and stay the hell away from politics.

Shiloh, wouldn’t you say that what the teacher did is equally bad?

I’m not saying that I completely approve of Snatch’s actions, don’t get me wrong; as I mentioned in that thread, I believe anything untoward that had happened was provoked by the unprofessional behavior of the clerk in question.

But let me ask you this: how did the student’s t-shirt provoke the teacher? If there is a part of this story not being told, ie if there was a rule against politically-oriented (and possibly offensive) t-shirts on either side of the coin, and this student openly violated it and pulled a “What are you going to do about it?”-routine with the teacher when confronted, thus provoking her into less-than-professional behavior, I would certainly understand that to a degree. If there was not, however, where is the excuse for her behavior under the circumstances?

But then again, filing charges and dragging her into court for assault and battery wouldn’t be bad either. A big fat lawsuit would be nice.

    RE:5

You’re damn skippy. I would slap the little bitch again in a f-cking heartbeat. Actually, I would make sure I hit him two or three times if I could do it all over.

The point is that I was minding my business and this dumbass had to impose his views on me, and try to berate me when it was none of his business in the first place.

If I had’ve been acting like a punk beforehand, then I would have been in the wrong. But it was the bookstore employee who started it, not me

    I just ended it.

On the other hand, this college professor had no business going out of her way to kick somebody for wearing a Bush T- shirt. Comparing that to my situation is like apples and oranges.

You liberals sing a different tune when somebody beats up on another because they are gay, or black.

The ends sure do justify the means, don’t they?

    16. Snatch, a strong person would have rebuked the store clerk verbally; certainly not by literally slapping the person and then running. I recall you’re from Texas. What’s the penalty there for assault & battery which you perpetrated?

  18. Snatch
    November 1, 2004 - 12:56 PM on November 1st, 2004

There is no penalty if you don’t get caught Ellis, and yes, I did try to be diplomatic at first, but when all else fails…….

He was being a little bastard. You act like you’re above it all, but you would have slapped the little rat f-ck too. Any of us would have.

You should have heard him moan, it was great

Are you also saying that breaking the law is OK as long as you don’t get caught? Yeee-haaaaaaaa … Jesse James rides again (was he a Texan?)!
