Lebanese government resigns amid mass opposition protests
Lebanese Prime Minister Omar Karami announced the resignation of his pro-Syrian government today.
Two weeks after the assassination of his predecessor, Rafik Hariri, triggered protests in the streets and calls for Syria to withdraw its thousands of troops.
“I am keen that the government will not be a hurdle in front of those who want the good for this country. I declare the resignation of the government that I had the honor to head. May God preserve Lebanon”.
Thousands of protesters, both Christian and Muslim, join together
to wave Lebanese flags during an anti-Syrian rally in Beirut.

Fox has this on right now!
I was listening to the radio when I heard it and had to rush to my computer to post it and then I started looking for the links. As you can see the post has changed a lot in the past forty minutes.
I think this is wonderful. People demanding freedom. I’d say this has a lot to do with what has been going on in Iraq. The ousting of a murdering dictator and the success of a free election.
OMG I was thinking that same thing:eek: I think for all the good and bad that has happened in Iraq, good will prevail in the region as a result.
The Democrats must be crying in their Chivas Regal (an Imported French spirit) right now. Don’t think sandy, shiloh, and dg are going to be too happy. No left wing government taking over in Lebanon to implement their Marxist foolishness.
4,
I think democrats are every bit as happy as you are, PCD. The issue of the Syrian occupation of Lebanon has been the subject of almost as many UN resolutions as the Israeli occupations of Gaza, the West Bank, The Golan Heights, and south Lebanon. I think there may be 3 components to this sudden public outcry: the killing of the former PM, the announcement by Syria that it would pull most troops out, due to unanimous international pressure, and an emboldening of some Lebonese who feel that the United States will support them.
5. isn’t this a rush to action, sandy? It has only been since 1989 that Syria signed an agreement with the UN to withdraw from Lebanon.
Why does it seem that the LEFT is placing all it’s chips on Failure in America? I hope that I am communicating this correctly.
They want Iraq to fail.
They want, deep down another attack, just to hurt the president.
They want Social Security to fail.
Help me out people…. throw me a bone.. yall know many more examples of the Left WANTING US to fail.
I think sandyb stated it well – - that most (no matter their party affiliations) are pleased with the events in Lebanon today
Reilly, I wouldn’t be too sure of that. what have the democrats done to foster the Lebanon people power movement? What have the democrats done to put pressure on syria to leave Lebanon?
When W stands to gain, like he did when Khadaffi turned in his WMD, the left, and democrats especially were not happy.
7,
If social security failed it would sour a major historical Democratic achievement. I’m not sure why Democrats would want that.
Liberals don’t want Iraq to fail. We have different ideas about how to proceed with Iraq; which included elections and a power handover much earlier than Bremer was willing to concede was necessary.
I find your claim that those on the left want an attack to discredit Bush to be pretty revolting.

Sorry for the doublepost.
11. sandy, the left DOES want Iraq to fail. From Ellen Ratner’s famous screed that she had to eat to every Democrat running for President, they want Iraq to fail to give them a chance to dupe the public into voting for Watered Down Marxism and no new ideas.
11- unfortunately the left elected to office don’t always agree with you.
