Actor Gere attacks plans for China arms embargo

Reporters in Tokyo were startled when actor Richard Gere launched into a condemnation of Europe’s plans to lift an arms embargo against China.

After promoting his new film “Shall We Dance?” Gere grabbed a microphone to denounce plans by the European Union to lift the embargo imposed after China’s bloody crackdown on pro-democracy protests in 1989.

“I so agree with your prime minister that the European Union should not remove the ban against selling arms to China,” he said. “I agree with him totally.”

“They should not be rewarded for this anti-secession legislation that’s in now,” Gere said, referring to a new Chinese law that sanctions the use of force against Taiwan.

I never thought I’d see the day when I would agree with Richard Gere.

However, I do not agree with his having stated his political views during a press conference which was put together so he could promote his movie. The reporters weren’t there to gain insight into his personal political views and opinions.

  1. Oh for the love of God:roll: I am glad he didn’t preface the statement by saying that he speaks for the entire world:wink:

  2. lol – - I thought the exact same thing, peejz ;)

  3. This may be the first case in history of an “actor” siding with freedom and taking a stand AGAINST a communist regime…I’m in shock.

  4. 3- Isn’t that the truth:wink:

  5. Richard gere still a left-wing hollywood jerk i mean he has a mouth as big as micheal moores if nit maybe bigger and lets see him get his foot out of it:lol:

  6. Well, at least one case that you are hearing of.. Gary Sinese (CSI: NY, Forest Gump, etc.) has been up front in supporting the President, promoting school supplies for Iraqi children, visiting Iraq, etc….

tell me who you see more on the news, Sinese, or some loudmouth like Ashley Judd, Sean Penn, etc.

thank you…..and thanks to Richard Gere for continuing to apply pressure to the F-ed up regine in Beijing (vis a vis Tibet, Taiwan, etc.)

    Kudos Rich.

  7. Snowy, give him some credit, he is on the right side of this one…. and has been on the ride side regarding Tibet.

Even though his obsession with the Dahli Lahma is a little homoerotic, at least he is actually taking stands AGAINST communism.

    refreshing, isn’t it?

  8. This isn’t the only time Gere wondered off the plantation.. I believe a couple years ago, he gave Hillary Clinton a dressing down at some dem fundraiser over her hubby’s response to Aids or something along those lines..

The guy might be wrong most of the time, by by golly, he aint scared to take his own people on.. I respect that.
