They Need Homes

Aceh regeneration fuels logging threat

Government officials estimate that 100,000 new houses will be needed over the next few years for those left homeless by the December 26th tsunami. But environmentalists warn that this construction boom poses a major threat to Indonesia’s ravaged tropical forests.

The UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization has already sounded the alarm over the issue of logging. And earlier this month, it advised tsunami-hit countries to protect their forests during the reconstruction period. It said governments in South and South-East Asia should “avoid over-harvesting and illegal felling of trees”.

One would think the need for a hundred thousand homes would far outweigh the importance of trees – - but it doesn’t. Considering what the UN said I then thought why not have all the materials shipped in so these people can have homes and not touch the tropical forests. That would seem an easy enough answer.

I should have known better – - because when dealing with environmentalists and the United Nations nothing is as easy as it should be. Environmentalists and the UN said purchasing the materials overseas carries risks. The wood would have to be certified that it is not from illegal logging from any nation as well as Indonesia.

This is stupid.

  1. 167,
America is not a Judeo-Christian nation (Islam stems from that same tradition, by the way, accepting Jesus and Abraham), but one ruled by secular law. There’s quite a difference.

  2. 193. You are welcome here Joe, however, to read a line of what someone has posted, and make an assumption that someone is judging someone based on the color of their skin is well,,,, stupid. Why don’t you take peejz advice on reading the post before you make a broad sweeping comment on someone. Do you know what color we are? No.

in 197, Joe, you assume that we don’t think. I suggest you go to Democratic Underground to find people who are blind idealogs. The trash written there should be front page of the newspapers across the nation…. That would be the demise of the Democratic/Progressive/Communist party. Just like that.

You think that we are radical? Why because we don’t toe the line with the likes of Robert KKK Byrd, or Robert Kennedy? “alittle here,,,alittle there”… listen to their retoric.

You wanna talk about fantasy world… Bud I DON’T live in a fantasy world. I live in a REAL world that is dangerous, and an appeasing attitude twards the ENEMY, like the left proposes, would get me KILLED.

So, there you have it. You came in here, shot you mouth off without knowing what you are talking about, and made a fool of yourself. I suggest coming in tomorrow and attempting to start over,,, or better yet, change your name and join the discussion. I would be hard for me not to equate the name Joe here without thinking of a fool for me.

  3. 201- To a certain degree I agree with your statement. We were founded on Christian belief, but we are ruled by secular law.

  4. Sandy, our secular laws, were built upon Biblical laws. I am sure that you understand that.

  5. 202-Amen to that:grin:

  6. Mr. Galt,

Like I said. I did not realize that there was any preexisting structured dialogue going on here, but since you continue to address me in your transmissions let me give you a word of advice.

Please, before you begin to write, bring your thought process into focus. I really don’t know where to begin with the disjointed argument you presented above, so I have no way of beginning any intelligent discussion with you. Well, I guess I could but the debate would continue to be all over the place and there is nothing constructive to come of that. Please gather yourself first, stick to a topic and I really believe you will be happy with the results.

    Thanks,
    Joe

  7. 206-You are just as dumb as i thought. In order for you to begin an intelligent conversation, you would need to be intelligent. You are not.

  8. Peejz and John Galt

You guys are actually suggesting that it is a bad thing to understand your enemy and how your enemy thinks. I just don’t have the time to try to debate such a thing.

  9. Don’t have time or can’t really explain your statement:?:

  10. Zelda,,,, I understand the enemy abroad. I have seen what they do. I have lost friends to them.

I also understand the enemy here at home.

“He cannot ride two horses at the same time. We cannot be for lawful ordinances and for an alien conspiracy at one and the same moment.”

“For this day’s work, lords, you have encouraged treason and opened the prison doors to free the traitors. A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and he carries his banners openly against the city. But the traitor moves among those within the gates freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears no traitor; he speaks in the accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their garments, and he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation; he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of a city; he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to be feared. The traitor is the carrier of the plague. You have unbarred the gates of Rome to him.”

  11. 207. Thanks peejz. You said it all. But, he may be on to something,,, I am just a dumb ole country boy.

He talks about gathering thoughts, he throws statemets about WMD,,,, to get an reaction, and then never follows up on it.

  12. peejz;

What’s gotten in to you today? You’re normally far more amiable.

  13. Well Mr. Galt, it sounds like you might have a bit of a self esteem problem. That’s the second time you have referred to yourself as a “dumb ole country boy.” Can’t do anything for you there, but therapy might do some good.

And as far as discussing WMD, where would you like to start. How about our own back yard with groups like the Michigan Militia that didn’t receive any retribution beyond the outing of MeVeigh and Nichols. How about North Korea. They outright admitted to having WMD and you don’t see us busting the door down of the palace at Pyongyang. Don’t get me wrong, I am glad we aren’t provoking war with NK because I don’t think we need to start pissing off China. This is just the reason we should have kept our butts out of Iraq. The threat lying there was no more serious than the ones that exist in Syria, Iran or several African countries where terrorists train. We invaded a country for the wrong reasons and now we are paying for it as insurgents come from far and wide to converge on Iraq so they can fight the invading Americans. And the hate grows on. Don’t take my word for it. Just watch how our global reputation has and will continue to decline and suffer from this horrid situation. You will see it as an entire generation of children in countries throughout the world will grow up with a hatred of Americans in their hearts. And mark my word, there will be another bin Laden to rise from this mess and who knows what kind of damage he or she will do. My bet is it will make 9/11 look like nothing.

But like I said, don’t take my word for it. Get out there and talk to the people who know. Talk to the men and women returning from these war zones. See what they say. That’s where you will get the honest scoop. At least that’s where I get it,

That’s all I got to say about that.

    Thanks,
    Joe

  14. Thanks Joe,

I am a Soldier, Company Commander of Military Police. I don’t have a confidence problem, I am actually seasoned by 9 years enlisted experience as an NCO before going to OCS, so I know what I am doing.

“Talk to the men and women returning from these war zones. See what they say. That’s where you will get the honest scoop. At least that’s where I get it,”… All I can do to about this statement is LAUGH….

  15. You’ve been in combat then?

  16. You have been to Iraq then?

  17. Combat, yes,,, Iraq, no.
    Have you?

  18. I’m only in the Service by marriage. My wife is a 1st Lt. with a maintenance unit. She will likely be in the heat of it within a year. I have a brother-in-law on his way. My uncle was shot up real good by a tank gunner in WWII. I’ve had some good conversations with him. I always defer to those with experience and since you have had some I would really like to hear what you have to say about it.

    Thanks,
    Joe

  19. 207. Interesting how any opponent is dumb, an idiot, a jackass, etc. Such tolerance of opposing views expressed by the principal posters here. Then again, that’s the party approach.

*Now, I dash to the sidelines as I’ve had my 30 minutes of mirth for the day.*

*Oh, it’s so easy to annoy the gullible.*

  20. 219 And what are your credentials?

  21. 219. I also wanted to say that it was never my intention to annoy you.

  22. 220, 221. Joe, I was not referring to you.

  23. Joe, I have served in the AF for a few years, then served in an Army SF unit until getting my commission in 2002. I have lost some friends, and I have seen what humans can do to each other. I HATE war, but my job is to train others for the task. One of my friends did not come back from Iraq alive, some came home injured, but the one who was not supportive of us going to IRAQ, stated that it is necessity.

My old unit was comprised completely of Warriors. The type of men who would go into the heat of a battle, even if they KNEW the would not make it back out. Many cared greatly for the Afgan people and wanted to make it a better place. And it has succeded. The vast majority of my friends who were in IRAQ care grately for the people there, however, they will destroy the enemy no matter the cost.

I have nothing but the utmost respect and love for the soldiers I have trained. Some of them are just kids, but the by the values the Army stand for. Loyalty, Duty, Respect for others, Self Respect, Honor, Integrity, Personal Courage. I hate to see people tell them that they are serving a wrong cause. It undermines their mission and destroys the morale of the unit.

A few of my friends saw the Micheal Moore movie,,,,,,,, they could not believe that something like this was produced by an American, or produced in America.

Your wife is a 1LT in a maint co. I hope that things are wound down soon and she does not have to go. If she does, she has an awesome responsibility…. To ensure her soldiers are propelry trainned and to take the best care of her soldiers that she can, whilst accomplishing the mission.

  24. Mr. Galt,

Thanks for the information. I have no way of knowing since I am not in the military, but I imagine the burden you all carry is huge. You, unlike civilians like myself, must follow orders without question. When the president says go to war, you go to war. You are between a rock and a hard place when it comes to doing your duty and having to listen to those of us who disagree with you being there. It’s a bad circumstance no matter how you look at it. This is what I think is the most difficult part of disagreeing. How can I (someone who has never served their country) dare go against what so many brave men and women have fought, been wounded (physically and mentally) and even died for. But there lies the reason I do disagree. It’s because I can’t stand seeing the death, young guys walking around with crutches because their leg was blown off and the mental destruction of so many lives. And at the hands of a commander in chief who didn’t have the balls to serve when called upon.

My wife knows her duty and is actually very upset that others’ tours have been extended while there are people like her still stateside who should be headed over there so they can come home. She, like you, is also prior service. She knows what it is like to be on both sides. She is now and will continue to be a great officer because she knows how to take care of her soldiers. I am very proud of her and the Army. I have been privileged to meet a lot of great people.

And I am not alone. Unlike Vietnam, there is a tremendous respect among a majority of Americans for all of our military troops. I don’t think there is one rationally thinking person against the war who holds animosity toward any of our troops. I know that’s difficult to see. Maybe these people (myself include) should enlist a more covert form of protest as to not hurt the moral of soldiers. That is definitely something to think about. The one thing I can never do is accept how Mr. Bush has put you all into harms way. I wish you the best of luck. Take care of yourself.

    Joe

    P.S.
As for Mr. Moore’s film: while there was some very interesting and valid points brought up about Mr. Bush, for the most part I agree it was a well done piece of propaganda. And the whole propaganda thing goes both ways. There’s Rush and Fox on one side, and Franken, Rhodes and Air America on the other. Now if you want someone to go to war against, here are some people and groups to start with.
