What – Prime Time Press Conference
When – Tonight
Time – 8:30 PM EST
The White House stated he will be giving more details about his plans for Social Security among other things.
UPDATE: Faced with three of the four largest broadcast networks snubbing his news conference for regular prime-time programming, the White House moved the event from 8:30 p.m. EDT to 8 p.m. After the shift, ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox all said they would cover it.
(thanks for the update, Ellis)
shall we accept the only idea on the table, even if it’s destructive, just because it’s the only one?
no idea is better than a bad one put into play.
besides that, your premise is wrong.
other than that, you’re a hoot, too.
51- No idea is better than a bad play? Wow! Maybe there would be another plan on the table if the democratic party could come up with one. But as we all know, that won’t happen.
52
the best plan i’ve heard so far is the one to stop the rip-off being touted by George Bush.
he says it’s critical that something be done. he said the same thing about the weapons of mass destruction and he was wrong.
Republicans have attacked social security since its inception. why is that, do you suppose?
1935: 99 percent of Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives and 63 percent in the Senate try to kill Social Security by voting to send the bill back to committee. The attempt fails, and the Social Security Act is signed into law by Democratic President Franklin D. Roosevelt on August 14, 1935.
1936: Republican Presidential Nominee Alf Landon campaigns against Social Security, calling it a “cruel hoax,”while the Chairman of the Republican National Committee in a nationwide radio broadcast alleges that Social Security recipients will be forced to wear steel dog tags around their necks stamped with their Social Security numbers.
1939: 75 percent of Senate Republicans try, unsuccessfully, to kill legislation providing Social Security benefits to dependents and survivors of retired workers.
1948: Republicans win control of the U.S. House and the U.S. Senate for the first time in 18 years. The new Republican leadership’s stated goals include ending Social Security.
1950: 79 percent of House Republicans and 89 percent of Senate Republicans vote against making disabled Americans eligible for Social Security benefits. With the Republicans still in the majority, the proposal fails.
1956: 86 percent of Senate Republicans oppose a Social Security disability program, but with Democrats back in the majority, the program is approved.
1964: Republican Presidential Nominee Barry Goldwater and Republican Ronald Reagan both suggest that Social Security should be made voluntary, which would have the effect of ending the Program, since current retirees’ benefits are financed with younger workers’ payroll taxes.
1977: 58 percent of Senate Republicans vote against an amendment to provide semiannual increases in Social Security benefits.
1977: 88 percent of House Republicans and 63 percent of Senate Republicans vote against an increase in the Social Security payroll tax needed to keep the system solvent.
1981: The Reagan White House proposes $35 billion in Social Security cuts ($24 billion of which ultimately are enacted). 99 percent of House Republicans and 98 percent of Senate Republicans vote for legislation containing $22 billion in Social Security and Medicare cuts.
1981: The Reagan Administration proposes $200 billion in Social Security cuts between 1982 and 1990, including reduction in early retirement benefits; tightened disability eligibility standards; a delay in the 1982 Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA); and a 10 percent eventual reduction in benefits for all new retirees. The U.S. Senate repudiates Reagan’s proposal by a vote of 96-0.
1982: President Reagan and Senate Republicans propose $40 billion in Social Security benefit cuts over three fiscal years.
1985: The Reagan Administration backs attempts by the Republican Senate leadership to eliminate the 1986 Social Security COLA. Then-Vice President George H.W. Bush, father of the current President, casts the tie-breaking vote to eliminate the COLA. The Democratic-controlled U.S. House defeats the proposal. In the 1986 mid-term elections, the Republicans lose control of the U.S. Senate, with Democrats making an issue of the latest Republican attempt to cut Social Security benefits.
1990s: Republican efforts to end Social Security begin to take a new form: trying to convince Americans that Social Security benefits would earn more in the booming stock market.
2000-2005: After the stock market “boom”fades, Republicans argue that privatizing Social Security is needed to “save”or “reform”the program, exaggerating reports of future financial challenges with false claims of “bankruptcy”and “crisis.”
53- because the people would do better with their own money. As it is, you have people putting money in that will not see a dime of it. The republicans had the forthought to know that the system was flawed at inception.
The death tax was originally instituted as a temporary emergency measure designed to raise funds for war-related events. For instance, the first federal estate tax was enacted in 1797 in order to fund the
nation’s emerging Navy. Having met this goal, the tax was repealed in 1802.
Congress revived the estate tax for national emergencies, such as the Civil War and the Spanish-American War, but later repealed the tax when the crises ended. In 1916, the estate tax became a permanent feature of our tax code.
and if people failed with their own money, we’d be back to the same poverty that social security was designed to prevent.
& people, often thru no fault of their own, fail. Enron, Tyco was not the fault of the individual investor.
if someone has no money when they can no longer work, what do you propose we do with them?
“and if people failed with their own money, we’d be back to the same poverty that social security was designed to prevent.”- It was enacted during the depression. We have laws in place to that were not around at that time. Also, this isn’t cutting out the benefits, it is enhancing the performance of your money. Enron- Who puts all their money in 1 basket voluntarilly? Who doesn’t take the time to read a stock report of a company that they are invested in? The reports told the real story. There was no surprise there.
you say there are laws now that weren’t there then.
what laws?
there are no laws to prevent poverty or am i missing something?
& people, often thru no fault of their own, fail.
it’s NEVER anyone’s fault, is it Shitloh? Except, of course, President Bush, right? It’s his fault that people don’t work, don’t save, don’t better themselves..right? It’s never the individuals fault, is it?
a-hole.
you’re an idiot.
cut back on the steroids & shave your back.
54.
So, what’s your point?
Opposing this boondoggle of a Ponzi Scheme should be a badge of honor for any congressman or senator brave enough to stand up to this socialism.
I say, kudos!
wow, way to address the issue, scarecrow.
you’re calling me stupid and various names for disagreeing with you addresses the issues in your head.
i’d rather be a scarecrow than an artificially, blown up meanie.
try sedatives instead of steroids.
Haha..
Hey shithead.. for your information, I maintain my physique the old fashioned way…. I don’t eat crap, and I work out every day..
But you wouldn’t know anything about actual “hard work” or sacrifice, or perseverance… you just blame republicans, the rich, or the president for everyone’s failings. You can call me whatever you want.. the facts remain.
A) I grew up dirt poor, the child of uneducated hillbillies.
B) I served in the US Navy
C) I paid my own way through college and graduated magna cum laude
d) I’m a successful sales manager with a great home, a beautiful girlfriend and a great physique.
e) I speak 3 languages and play 5 instruments.
So, rage on, scrarecrow.. but everything I have, I’ve done on my own, through HARD WORK AND EFFORT.
Something you and your socialist buddies know nothing about.
excuse me. i didn’t know you were a college educated hate filled idiot.
what a waste of a college desk.
gotta run, the welfare office is late with my check & food stamps.
you’re such a silly boy.
run away, scarecrow…. bye bye jackass.
find a new government program to make up for your own “shortcomings” call it “weenie-fare”
you a-hole.
66-as opposed to a welfare recipient that has taken a class here and there, but never enough to justify paying out his own pocket?
kilo’s not the only mean spirited person who pronounces posts like truth.
opinions are as cheap as you say they are.
Clinton To Dems: Get Your Own Plan
Bill Clinton (search) says Democrats should quit obstructing the President’s Social Security proposal and offer a plan of their own. In an interview with “Good Morning America,”Clinton says, “I think the Democrats should say what they are for on Social Security in the next couple [of]weeks; they’ve got time to put together a program.”
The former president adds, “I think it should include an opportunity for people to participate in savings and ownership. They don’t have to do private accounts… But I think that the Democrats should have a plan, and they should talk to the president and congressional Republicans about it.”
Oh, Puh-lease!!!!!!!!!
Sounds to me like Billy Blowjob attempting to craft some sort of super statesman image.
What a joke. Why can’t he just say what he would do if he were still in office..(hold on, I just puked a little in my mouth)… ok, he would stick his monica-smelling finger in the air, find out which way the political winds were blowing (interesting choice of words)…then claim credit for everything.
Thank god he is nothing more than a national joke in the rear view mirror.
