Report: FBI Official Claims to Be ‘Deep Throat’

NEW YORK ” A former FBI official claims he was “Deep Throat,” the long-anonymous source who leaked secrets about President Nixon’s Watergate (search) coverup to The Washington Post, his family said Tuesday.

W. Mark Felt (search), 91, was second-in-command at the FBI in the early 1970s. His identity was revealed Tuesday by Vanity Fair magazine, and family members said they believe his account is true.

“The family believes my grandfather, Mark Felt Sr., is a great American hero who went well above and beyond the call of duty at much risk to himself to save his country from a horrible injustice,” a family statement read by grandson Nick Jones said. “We all sincerely hope the country will see him this way as well.”

  1. ok……

what exactly was the “horrible injustice”?

was it anything like being beheaded??

    just curious.

  2. Woodward & Bernstein say they will keep the secret until Deep Throat dies.

  3. You know, if England had an open media in the 1780s, you probably could get the same statement from Benedict Arnold’s family.

  4. 1-Not quite that bad, but I guess worse than lying to a Grand Jury and coercing others to commit perjury:wink:

  5. The question still stands..what “horrible injustice” exactly did this person allegedly save his country from????????

3,000 dead, incinerated and plunging from 100 stories? That kind of injustice? I must be stupid, because I don’t see it.

  6. maybe they were gathing information on travel office workers so they could fire them all….wait, that wasn’t THAT administration…..wait…maybe the presiden’t council committed “suicide” and was found in a park…oh, sorry, again, different administration.

    hmmmmmm

  7. Was it that perhaps Mr. Felt thought he was protecting the country against FBI Director G. Gordon Liddy?

  8. Wow, Peejz and Astro are posting here now? Cool!

  9. maybe he got the president to lie to a grand jury….wait…again, I get confused..again…DIFFERENT ADMINISTRATION.

  10. Maybe Mr. Felt blew the whistle on the White House requesting 1000 FBI files…wrong administration.

  11. Mr Felt helped get a corrupt President out of office, and you guys seem to hate him for that because that President happened to be a Republican.

  12. 13- I think they were baiting people on the issue Z. Many say what Mr. Felt did was retribution for not being named FBI Director. Felt was close to Hoover. It is reported that he was a bit more than angry as he felt he was the successor to Hoover.
The alleged acts of Nixon are no worse than that of Clinton. How they handled themselves is vastly different.

  13. “if so, then Clinton’s acts are similarly “alleged”, wouldn’t you agree?”- Mr. Clinton had his day in court.

  14. “The alleged acts of Nixon are no worse than that of Clinton.”

I understand that your position is shared by many, but I completely disagree.

President Nixon was trying to cover up a criminal act. President Clinton was trying to cover up the fact that he is a man-slut. That is a big difference to me.

  15. 18- No if you recall, he committed perjury, which is a criminal act. The lost his law licence for 5 years and was banned from trying a case in front of the Supreme Court. He also got a fine.

  16. Well, I think President Nixon’s transgressions were far worse than President Clinton’s.

  17. 22,

No doubt, I agree. Nixon was attempting to make the Presidency into a monarchy. His transgressions were far worse than Clinton’s, the only commonality is that they both brought shame to the office.

    Ted

  18. shiloh wishes he could be a “Deep Throat”, but all he’s been is “Deep Commode”.

  19. There is no evidence that Nixon even knew of the break in, let alone ordered it….some people here have some vivid imaginations.

Would that you got so worked up when muslim animals were REALLY depriving people of their rights….to live.

  20. But he is a republican, so that must mean that he was a racist, sexist, bigot, tool of the rich.

Too bad he never ACTUALLY killed anyone, like say……some democratic senators.

  21. I remember a movie about J. Edgar and some FBI honcho taking his records then using them to bring down Nixon. Did Felt talk to a screenwriter???

If Felt is so honorable, why is Gary Aldrich, who blew the whistle on a former bar bouncer requesting hundreds of FBI files of people who the Clintons thought of as enemies, so vilified by the people celebrating Felt??

  22. peejz, if you’re watching #29 is a prime example how folks editorialize constantly to talk about blaming someone for something.

there’s always blame enough for us weaselly liberals to lay on you &, obviously, more than enough to lay on us.

this website is the political version of the energizer bunny.

  23. 30,

I completely disagree with that assertion. The war could have easily been won if the Armed Forces were allow to fight the war, instead of the politicians. We withdrew from Viet Nam and it was a mistake to do so.

We are repeating the same mistake in Iraq that we did in Viet Nam. If we allow the armed forces to do what they do instead of politicizing it this battle (Iraq) will be over sooner than later.

    Ted

  24. Yeah, but remember Ted….someone might point at a muslim animal’s genitals…that would be bad!!!

  25. disagreements is what makes the site go ’round.

this country would not have tolerated the number of American deaths it would have taken to win Vietnam. the North Vietnamese ate a bowl full of rice, lived in holes and fought the French, fought us & would have fought the next guy, because their cause was just in their eyes and were willing to sacrifice more, die more and last longer than any occupier could have come close to.

Vietnam was a preemptive war that we lost & were always going to lose.

if you think Iraq is bad, occupying Vietnam would have been quite impossible.

  26. 33
i forget – how does one differentiate between a Muslim animal and a non Muslim animal?

    can you tell by looking?

  27. 35, same way you consider Felt a hero and Aldrich a piece of lying crap. It all in the bias and prejudice of the beholder.

BTW, shiloh, you talk to mawmaw about your little posts here?

  28. 36 – did i call Felt a hero? i must have missed it. does it mean anything when you assign these values to me without asking?

i do think when he saw how Nixon was attempting to manipulate the Bureau illegally to protect the ongoing criminal cover up – it could have pissed him off to the point where exposing the scheme was a viable option.

he might have gone to a prosecutor or a grand jury, but when dealing with the President of the United States, i would guess finding a venue to accuse the Chief Executive of felonious conduct could be a tricky thing.

perhaps, & just perhaps, it was a little heroic to risk ruin for principle. or heck, he could have been angry about not getting a promotion.
i am not willing to condemn him without knowing what he was up against. you must like him a little, he was convicted of authorizing illegal wiretaps & searches of anti_Vietnam groups – that would make him your guy, a little, yes?

Reagan had to pardon him so that might give him some credentials among the right wing.

would you rather have had Nixon uncaught?

  29. 24- “Nixon was attempting to make the Presidency into a monarchy. His transgressions were far worse than Clinton’s”- How was he trying to make the prsidency ionto a monarchy? How were his transgressions far worse?

  30. 29- A quote from Liddy today; ” If he were interested in performing his duty, he would have gone to the grand jury with his information”

  31. monarchy, form of government in which sovereignty is vested in a single person whose right to rule is generally hereditary and who is empowered to remain in office for life.

  32. Well, this was all 30+ years ago so it’s a moot point but I’m glad that the identity is finally out.

  33. 41- I think the fact that it happened 30 years ago says a lot about the situation. Do you think the government of 2005 would handle it the same?

  34. Felt knew the crimes being committed. going to a grand jury did not guarantee anything. especially when the Justice Department in the persons of L Pat Grey (a White House stooge) and John Mitchell, convicted of a felony & trying to cover-up the info Felt got out, were running things.

perhaps going to the Post was a way to ensure the facts did get out, unfiltered by government BS.
& now there are laws protecting ‘whistle blowers’ from retribution. whistle blowers should be seen as the good guys, shouldn’t they? many agencies (like the AMA, ABA & many other professions) try to get away with investigating themselves with predictable results.

it wasn’t Felt who led to Nixon’s resignation. if we keep our eye on the ball, it’s the burglars, the Chapins, the Haldemans & Erlichmans & the Mitchells and the other convicted felons like Liddy who should be ashamed of what they did to this country.

piling on Felt is a classic diversion from those who bear the complete responsibility for a humiliating chapter for the Presidency.

the evidence of the crimes that administration committed is public record. compare that to the evidence (not here-say) against the Clinton Administration and let me know where the scales balance.

i fear that in some comments above, some have Lady Justice tossing her blindfold aside and, depending on who we’re talking about, making her judgments based on something other than objective evidence.

  35. Whose transgressions were worse?

    Mr. Felt or President Nixon

  36. The humiliating chapter for the presidency involved.

    Blowjobs in the oral office
    incinerating american christians
ignoring half a dozen attacks against america by muslim animals.
allowing enron, worldcom, et al to run wild

but I guess a bungled hotel break-in was much more of a threat to our republic…..

Pile on Nixon…he was convicted of nothing, and there is NO EVIDENCE that he knew about or did anything…..not like, having his counsel killed, driving a woman into a lake, or anything like that.

    get a life.

  37. and Felt is a f-ing stooge… a wanna-be FBI director who was disgruntled at not getting the top spot.

I trust him about as far as I can throw him.

and who cares anyway? Who exactly lost their lives in this “scandal”? A white house counsel? oh, shit, that was clinton….. a house full of christians…wait…Clinton again. Sailors on board the USS Cole…oh shit..Clinton again.

    Damn.

  38. are the tapes evidence of anything? Brookings Institute break in? covering up the Watergate?
lying to the CIA & FBI.

do you just ignore that, pretend it never happened?

  39. Your bias and anger combine to make you sound absurd.

  40. 47, shi, just like you ignore BOTH Clinton’s transgressions. Just like you refuse to comment that Aldrich was in the same league or even purer of motive than Felt.

Shi, I’m a little tired of your Faux persona and such. You were outed. You are such a damaged personality that you have to come here to play head games. Since you hate Bush so much, resign, and don’t give us your victim crap or whine about what dose resigning from the fake job you tell every you have. You are not an honest person here. I know what I can and will say and what I won’t ever say. All I’m saying is stop being the Northern end of a South bound donkey.

Oh, I’m through dropping oblique hints that you are ignoring. Just go do your real job or quit and openly run for office as the person you are in real life. Got the integrity to do that because I doubt you do. Take that, shove it in your pipe, and smoke it.

  41. 47
you said i consider Aldrich ‘a piece of lying crap’.

i don’t know who Aldrich is.

you really shouldn’t continue to invent what i think & then condemn me for it. there are many unfair things, but that has to be right up there at the top of the list.

  42. 50, I know you very well know who Aldrich is, what his responsibilities were in the early days of the Clinton transition and at the Clinton White House, and if you have met him. Now, enough of your charade. I tire of your antics.

  43. 47- Kind of like the Billing records showing up at the WH?

  44. i don’t know who Aldrich is. i recall reading his name earlier today in a post, but was not curious enough to find out more.

what is my motive for lying.? do you think i somehow fear a conversation regarding whatever he did? am i known from shrinking from controversy? don’t you think, if i wanted to i could spin some crap as well as you do?

the amazing thing is, i really believe you think i’m lying.
    well, have fun with that.

  45. 43-”Felt knew the crimes being committed. going to a grand jury did not guarantee anything. especially when the Justice Department in the persons of L Pat Grey (a White House stooge) and John Mitchell, convicted of a felony & trying to cover-up the info Felt got out, were running things.”- pretty conclusive given the fact that it was just announced yesterday.
“piling on Felt is a classic diversion from those who bear the complete responsibility for a humiliating chapter for the Presidency.” Much like Monica took the heat? Or Paula Jones? Or Kathleen Willey? Or Gennifer Flowers? All were smeared yet I have yet to see you defend them.

  46. 47- Not ignoring it just putting it into perspective.

  47. 53, I know you are lying, Mawmaw knows you are lying, and the people around you whom you’ve asked what a goat roper was know you are lying. I understand you were quite an amusing sight trying to get someone to tell you that one, or trying to repair the damage you did to your cover here by misspelling Kittiwake.

Just get off the game you’ve played here. You have more important things to do. You are not as important as you think you are. That’s something else for you to stuff in that pipe of yours.

  48. ” now there are laws protecting ‘whistle blowers’ from retribution. whistle blowers should be seen as the good guys, shouldn’t they”- Wow, someone should let Linda Tripp know that.

  49. 56″You have more important things to do.”- You are more generous than I PCD:wink:

  50. wrong BLOWer peejz

How dare Linda Tripp try and smear the perfect and unassailable character of william Jefferson Blythe Clinton! How DARE SHE!!!!!

Whistle blowers are only heroes when bringing down republicans (or corporate masters in the tobacco or gun lobbies!!!)

I still fail to see what exactly Nixon’s crimes were….. show me a corpse in a lake, and maybe I’ll go along with you.

wait..that was the drunken senator from Massachussettes.

I would argue that John Kohn’s shooting a fleeing vietnamese teenager in the back was a much worse transgression than anything Nixon allegedly did…. or his lying about being in Cambodia…..

    what a joke.
