President Pledges Palestinian Payoff

Opening the White House to a Palestinian leader for the first time since 2001, President Bush offered words of support and pledges of aid as he met Thursday with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

In his first meeting here since he was elected in January to succeed Yasser Arafat, Abbas sought assurances from Bush that Israel’s withdrawal this summer from Gaza and parts of the West Bank will lead directly to resumption of the internationally endorsed “road map” peace plan and not mark the end of the road for an independent Palestine.

Bush said the White House would move to provide $50 million directly to the Palestinian Authority for housing and infrastructure in Gaza. That move is likely to be controversial because of past concerns of corruption in the authority’s governing structure. Congress has modified previous aid packages to prevent direct aid to the authority…
