PHILADELPHIA – The performers at the Live 8 show in Philadelphia are getting thousands of dollars in gifts. The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that celebrities at the event will be given designer suits, satellite radio subscriptions, Gibson guitars, $125 ties, $330 sweat suits and watches worth between $1,500 and $6,000. Total worth: $12,000.
The products were donated by manufacturers. Giving celebrities gift bags is common for award shows like the Grammys or the Oscars. Loyola Marymount University business and ethics professor Thomas White says it’s not unethical, but it is a gray zone.
The celebrities will also eat gourmet food catered by one of Philadelphia’s top restaurant owners, who is donating his services. The menu includes char-grilled dry aged beef, tea-smoked spare ribs and chicken and ginger dumplings.
Let me get this straight; they get corporate sponsors and instead of asking for money for the cause..starvation..they instead asked for gifts to hand out to the entertainers?

Huh? I may challange oposing views with my own commentary, but I certainly don’t kick people off or otherwise censor their views.
While the site is primarily for fans of a music group, there are discussions, sometimes very heated, with regards to topics like Iraq/Bush/Gay Marriage/Israel/global warming/Terri, etc.
If your claim to no dissenting views is based on the main home/landing page of the site which does not include any pro-Bush/pro-Iraq/pro-right-wing commentary, that is by design. The political/policy debates are left in the current events and political forms. (except when the band is promoting a cause)

But overall, there is not much dissent simply because the R.E.M fan community is largely liberal leaning–which follows due to the band’s left political views.
