No Vote On The New Constitution

The Iraqi parliament received the new draft constitution Sunday over the objections of Sunnis (search) on the committee that wrote it, but lawmakers adjourned without voting on it. The Sunni Arab speaker was not present.

Deputy speaker Hussain al-Shahristani (search), a Shiite, told reporters that speaker Hajim al-Hassani agreed with all parts of the draft but had “other appointments.”

Al-Hassani had been playing a major role in the final negotiations on the charter. Efforts to reach him and his spokesman were not successful.

Technically, no vote was required by parliament, al-Hassani said two days ago. At one time, officials wanted a vote as an affirmation of unity between the Shiites (search), Sunnis and Kurds, but that idea was shelved because of Sunni objections to the document and repeated delays in finalizing the draft.

U.S. Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad said in a televised interview that while the Sunnis did not get everything they wanted in the constitution, neither did the other communities.

“None of the communities are 100 percent happy with the draft,” he said. “A constitution is not a party platform. It’s a common road map.”

I for one am happy that this is taking time. I see this as the leaders working together for the common good. I will be very disappointed if this does become a Islamic Republic though.

    :evil: Come on kids its the Mideast, the common good in that part of the world is the family unit. in time that place will have some new Saddam just like the old one but controlled (think god by the us army ) Europe will get its money and U.S One world business’s will do OK for a time under the coming Islamic republic that will deal for dollars and take orders well. the woman will do find in the home, but the Kurds and Shiites and Sunnis will still attack each other and it is as normal as can be.
    but as long as all act “something like people”, the business of America will be happy. until a really big H-Bomb takes out one of our cities in the good old empire of mass immigration for big money, i will tell you how to deal with all of the people’s of the mideast..See HOB’S ROME. Hang Saddam kill bin laden under torture and ( and put it on show time or HBO Or fox\CNN ) close down the borders and hang 3/4 of the government people in the plaza and town squares and common in all towns and cities and hand out money like its water to all our boys and girls in the Army and navy and the air-force! and do not subjugate people here but subjugate all areas in the Mideast and make it the hell it is. it worked for Rome it will work for you. much love.:cool: by the way i mean it.
