President Bush promised Thursday night the government will pay most of the costs of rebuilding the hurricane-ravaged Gulf Coast in one of the largest reconstruction projects the world has ever seen. “There is no way to imagine America without New Orleans, and this great city will rise again,” the president said.
Standing in Jackson Square in the heart of the French Quarter, Bush acknowledged his administration had failed to respond adequately to Hurricane Katrina, which killed hundreds of people across five states. The government’s costs for rebuilding could reach $200 billion or beyond.
Bush described the hurricane’s aftermath as “days of sorrow and outrage,” and he said the nation had “witnessed the kind of desperation no citizen of this great and generous nation should ever have to know.” He deplored scenes of victims calling out for food and water, criminals who had no mercy, and bodies of the dead lying uncovered in the street.
The president said he had ordered the Department of Homeland Security to undertake an immediate review of emergency plans in every major city in America.
He also said a disaster on the scale of Katrina requires greater federal authority and a broader role for the armed forces.
Bush said the suffering of victims was tempered by acts of courage and kindness by the Coast Guard and other rescue workers. To the hundreds of thousands of people forced from their homes, Bush said, “You need to know that our whole nation cares about you _ and in the journey ahead you are not alone.”

Your thoughts?
29- Scrapping the electoral college for popular vote has been suggested but it will not should it be adopted. A states will decide for all and that is not right.
In retort, Fox spins things so far right I’m surprised they haven’t effected the earth’s spin – LOL. You get the point. I was watching MSNBC last night.- Every media outlet, and every reporter interviewed has something to say about Fox News. They claim that it is bad, etc. But have you noticed which network is getting the viewers? I don’t think that all those watching the various programs could or would be considered right leaning. I think it is successful because of the programing.
49- Mike that is funny that you meantion that. For all of the left leaning that NBC has done in it’s broadcasting, it is now targeting the religious right in network programming.
52, and how does NBC think it will get the Religious Right to watch them? Hire Pat Robertson?
53-a reality show where they make dreams come true(?). They go to the south and help poor but religious people. Not exactly my idea of entertainment!
54, I know, they are going to have Brian Williams preach at the Ebenezer Baptist Church.
NBC is going to send Foreign Correspondants to Mississippi and have a Foreign Bureau in Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse in New Orleans.
54, also, NBC is going to make Katie Couric become a NASCAR groupie.
54, I forgot, NBC is going to make Matt Laurer spit out his front teeth so that he can relate to the Rural Southerner who listens to Charlie Daniels and drinks Jack Daniels.
haha….good one PCD.
Since lefties at the Networks in NYC think anything west of the hudson is a foreign country
57- You’ve got that right!
50. I voted for Nixon and Reagan each their first times. I also voted for Lieberman (DINO) when he first won his Senate seat.
51. I have a theory that Fox gets a good part of its statistical ratings success because it is one of the few (only?) right wing network. Thos elooking for what you guys call left leaning have many more options at the sames times as O’Reilly, Hannity, et al. I can’t prove it, but I do believe there is some logic in my theory.
61, you always think you have logic and facts when you are dealing out your prejudices and delusions. You can’t even admit the truth. Fox is not right wing. It is centrist, just the facts maam reporting. If there’s no Bush Bashing, you scream that it a right wing entity.
61-There may be some truth to that, but even in the re-run category, Fox is beating out the competition. And I have noticed that politicians that would not have thought to dare step on Fox soil are now doing so out of necessity.
FOX News is #1 because their newsreporting is unbiases, plain and simple
and their commentators are talented.
it’s no big mystery…same reason why Rush and Sean have audiences and Air Amerikkkka dosent……TALENT.
Why do Limbaugh, Hannity et al, do so well on talk radio while every Leftist has bombed, and Air Jizzeera is looking like the Hindenburg approaching New Jersey for its last landing?
My theory is that it is because talk radio audiences tend to be people who are middle class. They are working; listening while commuting or at work. Producing, contributing, law abiding, in other words, the backbone of America. In other words, they nare traditional, thinking, common sense people.
The Liberal elitists may listen to Air Jizzeera, but the great mass of the DemokRat base tend to watch TV more than listen to radio. They watch inane daytime TV shows like game shows and soaps, because they are on welfare or SSI. They get all of their information (propaganda) from the traditional alphabet propaganda news channels. They listen to the crap that is packaged as “news” and believe it.
If you want to make it in talk radio, you’d better do your homework. Have facts and information to back up your assertions. Air Jizzeera is vapid and is predictably failing.
