A Halloween controversy is brewing in Newton, where one elementary school has banned all traditional Halloween activities.The principal of Underwood Elementary School says it has come to the school’s attention that Halloween traditions are offensive to some people’s religious beliefs. Some families, David Castellini said, have even kept their children home from school on Halloween because of this.
This troubles me on many levels, but the two obvious ones are;
1. What does ones religious beliefs have to do with school policy in a public school?
2. If you are going to consider religion with regards to school programs, why would you discriminate against the parents, who for religious reasons, don’t want their child exposed to homosexual teachings in the public school?
