CIA renditions began under Clinton
The CIA’s controversial “rendition” program was launched under US president Bill Clinton, a former US counter-terrorism agent has told a German newspaper.
Michael Scheuer, a 22-year veteran of the CIA who resigned from the agency in 2004, has told Die Zeit that the US administration had been looking in the mid-1990s for a way to combat the terrorist threat and circumvent the cumbersome US legal system.
“President Clinton, his national security adviser Sandy Berger and his terrorism adviser Richard Clark ordered the CIA in the autumn of 1995 to destroy Al Qaeda,” Mr Scheuer said.
“We asked the president what we should do with the people we capture. Clinton said ‘That’s up to you’.”
Mr Scheuer, who headed the CIA unit that tracked Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden from 1996 to 1999, says he developed and led the “renditions” program.
This would explain why Hillary has been so quiet lately – - but it also goes to show that the people captured by both administrations should have been treated as prisoners of war.
Off topic a bit – - I always get a chuckle when I read “national security adviser Sandy Berger” – - I wonder if Sandy has any papers pertaining to this in his pants….

Let’s get one thing straight about the terrorists in US custody. They ARE NOT POWs. The status of POW confers certain rights under the Geneva Conventions. To qualify for that status and receive those rights you must:
1. be a UNIFORMED member of a military unit with a designated chain of command
2. Carry ID identifying you as such.
ANYONE captured in a combat zone armed and engaged with our military who does not meet those criteria, are NOT POWS. They are designated as non uniformed combatants. As such, they are entitled to a military tribunal to determine their status, i.e. are they non-uniformed combatants or simply someone with a weapon in the wrong place at the wrong time. At this tribunal they are to be provided legal representation by the convening authority. If they are in fact found guilty of being a non uniformed combatant, the historical treatment for non uniformed combatants has been the same as saboteurs, and spies during wartime. That has been execution. I think that if we started stringing some of these Islamo idiots up like we did 7 of the 8 German Saboteurs we captured in the US during WWII, we will definitely have fewer of them to feed, fewer of them to release to kill again, and will definitely cut into Al Quaeda’s recruiting base. Not very many Islamic extremists are going to sign up knowing that if captured they’re going to hang. Allah doesn’t want you with a stretched neck.

One of the things I just don’t understand is why they would compromise an intelligence gathering program of this importance by letting ANY of the detainess go. Yes, I know that killing an innocent person isn’t a good thing, but isn’t jeopardizing the lives of tens of thousands by allowing the disclosure of a top secret intelligence gathering program decidedly worse?
