Richard Belzer, actor from Law & Order SVU, was on Real Time With Bill Maher. He made some outrageous statements about our military, but this is the one that struck me as the most ignorant:
Belzer: “That’s bullshit: ask them! They’re not, they don’t read twenty newspapers a day. They’re under the threat of death every minute. They’re not the best people to ask about the war because they’re gonna die any second.”
He kept this up until Maher stepped in with this:
Belzer: “You think everyone over there is a college graduate? They’re 19 and 20-year-old kids who couldn’t get a job-”
Ros-Lehtinen: “Yeah, you know because you’ve been there and-”Belzer: “What, I don’t fucking read!? Don’t do that!”
Maher, over Belzer: “Woe, woe, woe. Come on. Wait, wait, wait. That, don’t.”
Belzer: “Pardon my French.”
Maher: “That was over the line and now you’re going to lose-”
Belzer: “It’s this patronizing thing that people have about if you’re against the war everyone’s lumped together. You know, the soldiers are not scholars, they’re not war experts-”
Maher: “You’re going to lose even me like Michael Moore did when he came down on Charlton Heston in Columbine.”
Who knew that reading 20 newspapers a day made one a scholar?
Brian at Iowa Voice has some good analogy here
And NewsBusters have the links here
Richard Belzar is your usial sewer mouthed comedian sitting around spewing his usial sewage out of his mouth he should have it washed out with soap:mad:
Yeah, reading 20 liberal rags a day would make you as stoopid as Belz.
I love to hear about who is or isn’t in the military from people who have NEVER donned a uniform…. it’s friggin’ hilarious.
Essentially, Belzer point is that the enlisted ranks of the Military are comprised of lower, and lower middle-class 19 and 20 year olds who don’t possess an ivy league pedigree.
Well, he is not entirely incorrect. However, this is where he IS wrong. Many of those “uneducated” 19 and 20 year olds have joined because they:
A. Have a great love of this country and have studied it’s history
B. Fully intend on taking advantage of educational benefits and eventually going to college.
Therefore, were I “Belz,” I might think twice about impunint the intellect or education of the brave young men and women who fight for his right to be a complete tool.
Another turd floats up from the cesspool of Liberalism to grab the media spotlight by disparaging Americans who have probably done far more for their country at age 19 or 20 than Belzer has done in his entire life.
Belzer, Alec Baldwin, Cindy Sheehan, other Hollywood idiots, the pacificists, none of them would have the freedom to publicly spew were it not for the service and sacrifice of those whom they disparage. How ironic.
Gee the soldiers are such idiots according to these fools. I wish I had enlisted instead of going to college first. If I had gone in at 18, I could’ve retired at 38 with half pay, full benefits for life and a paid for PHD. As well as having 30 days paid vacation every year that if you didn’t use them, you could cash them in. Hell I’d kill for a job with those kind of benefits. What am I saying? I volunteered to go back in to kill to get those kind of benefits. LOL Let’s face facts, if these liberal idiots had been in power during any other major conflict in the history of the US, we’d probably be speaking a different language, the blacks would still be slaves, or we’d still be having 4 o’clock tea. I have no heartburn with people being idealists until they refuse to get out of the way of the realists who need to get the job done.
Hmmm – Belzer, a comedian turned character actor, is an illuminati because he reads “20 Newspapers a day”? Since most news papers simply repost feeds (especially with regards to international stories – like Iraq) from the larger news services, does this mean that he has to re-read the same article 20 times to assimilate the data? Or is it the Op-Ed pages of these 20 papers that provide the depth of Mr. Belzer’s knowledge?
In any event, what specific “scholarly” merit does Belzer bring to foreign policy arguments? I mean, other than his phenomenal acting talent and torretts-like mastery of the English language? According to his biography on IMDB, “the Belz” is “A social misfit, [who] was kicked out of every school he ever attended, due to his uncontrollable wit” (Source – http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001938/bio).
Thank you for your insight Mr. Belzer. I am sure that the police officers of our country (many of whom have backgrounds as sub-literate military enlistees) appreciate your stunning analysis, backed up by your incredible intellect developed through your expulsion from higher learning institutions. I believe your 15 minutes is up, sir, please step into the light…
