Senate Judiciary Committee’s bill:
“Allows illegal immigrants who were in the United States before 2004 to continuing working legally for six years if they pay a $1,000 fine and clear a criminal background check. They would become eligible for permanent residence upon paying another $1,000 fine, any back taxes and having learned English.
“New immigrants would have to have temporary work visas. They also could earn legal permanent residence after six years.
“Adds up to 14,000 new Border Patrol agents by 2011 to the current force of 11,300 agents.
“Authorizes a “virtual wall” of unmanned vehicles, cameras and censors to monitor the U.S.-Mexico border.
“Creates a special guest worker program for an estimated 1.5 million immigrant farm workers, who can also earn legal permanent residency.
Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist’s proposal:
“Requires all employers to verify the identity and immigration status of their employees through an electronic system.
“Assesses civil penalties of between $500 and $20,000 against employers for each illegal immigrant they hire and criminal penalties of up to $20,000 per illegal immigrant hired and up to six months in jail for engaging in a pattern of employing illegal workers.
“More than doubles the number of employment-based green cards, from 140,000 to 290,000, and makes more employment based visas available to unskilled workers. It also would free up other visas by exempting immediate relatives of U.S. citizens from being counted in the annual pool of 480,000 visas, and increase country-by-country ceilings on family sponsored and employment-based immigrants.
“Cancels visas of immigrants who have overstayed their visas and requires them to return to their home country to undergo additional screening at U.S. consulates.
“Makes it a misdemeanor crime for an immigrant to be in the country illegally.
“Increases the number of visas available for high-tech workers.
“Does not address President Bush’s proposal for a guest worker program.
House bill passed in December:
“Requires all employers to use within six years a database to verify Social Security numbers of employees or face civil or criminal penalties for hiring illegal workers.
“Requires mandatory detention for all non-Mexican illegal immigrants arrested at ports of entry or at land and sea borders.
“Establishes mandatory sentences for smuggling illegal immigrants and for re-entering the United States illegally after deportation.
“Makes illegal presence in the country a felony.
“Makes a drunken driving conviction a deportable offense.
“Requires building two-layer fences along 700 miles of the 2,000-mile border between Mexico and the United States.
“Does not address President Bush’s proposed guest worker program for illegal immigrants already in U.S.

I’ve got a question for the Senators. How hard is it to cross a “Virtual” Fence in lieu of a REAL one? A “Virtual” fence is a joke. These Senators are stuck on stupid. Sensors aren’t stopping anyone, drones aren’t stopping anyone. The Fence in San Diego is, if not stopping, at least deterring people. Third world people wanting jobs don’t give a rodent’s rear end about a “Virtual” fence. They give a damn about someone or something physically blocking their presence from crossing the border. A “Virtual” Fence is a waste of money, something Congress (especially the Senate) has become too damn good at. If you want to stop people from trespassing, you don’t put up a Virtual fence, you put up a real one. That is exactly what we need to do.
I feel sorry for these people who want to come here but can’t get in legally. However, they still need to obey the law. Do the laws need to be updated? Yes. Is blanket amnesty the answer? NO. We gave them blanket Amnesty in 1986 and now the number has tripled over what it was in 86. I feel that the illegals brought here as children should be given the option of earning their citizenship via military service. The Liberals will hate that idea, but it’s the French thing to do. Where do you think they get the soldiers for the French Foreign Legion? It’s called the foreign legion, because everyone but the officers are foreigners. Of course they are also the only unit in the French army that can put up any kind of fight without running away. I’m sure the libs will call it cruel and unusual. But let’s look at the facts. For 6 years they would receive above minimum wage, job training (other than just military skills. Have you seen what it costs to be trained as a helicopter mechanic lately?) educational benefits, 30 days of paid vacation annually, free healthcare and dental for themselves, spouses, and their children as well as the opportunity for worldwide travel and if they decide to stay in the military, retirement with half pay at age 38 and medical and dental benefits for life. I really wish I had enlisted instead of going in as an officer. I could’ve gotten all of my college paid for while I was on active duty.

Another part of the ILLEGAL immigration problem that hasn’t been addressed is the fact that so many of them are coming from Mexico with and spreading diseases that we have virtually wiped out in the US. Tuberculosis cases are way up as are a number of other diseases that have been the target of the CDC immunization efforts in this country for decades. With the growing, No shots for my kids, movement, this is going to leave a lot of children exposed to diseases that they would’ve otherwise been immunized against.
