How Do Latinos Feel About These Protests?

By: Pam On: Apr/10/06 - 16 Comments

Well according to this article, they oppose the marches and the illegals!

“That’s the objective of the marches — to give the impression that all Latinos are for allowing the illegals to become citizens,” said Phoenix resident Lionel De La Rosa. “Well, I’m not.”

The 71-year-old Texas native and Vietnam veteran said he favors punitive measures more in line with the immigration bill passed by the U.S. House in December that would have made it a felony to be in the United States illegally.

“I’m for that 100 percent,” he said. “As far as my Latino friends are concerned, they all agree on this.”

A 2005 survey by the Pew Hispanic Center found that Latinos in general have favorable attitudes toward immigrants and immigration.

But when it comes to illegal immigration, significant numbers have negative views of illegal immigrants.

The survey found those feelings are strongest among middle-class and middle-age U.S.-born Latinos.

And though 68 percent of Latinos said they believe illegal immigrants help the economy by providing low-cost labor, nearly a quarter felt illegal immigrants hurt the economy by driving down wages.

U.S.-born Latinos looked even less favorably toward illegal immigrants than foreign-born Latinos.

More than a third of U.S.-born Latinos said illegal immigrants hurt the economy, compared with just 15 percent of foreign-born Latinos.

Latinos also are divided over whether to allow illegal immigrants to earn citizenship. the survey found.

Though 88 percent of foreign-born Latinos favored allowing illegal immigrants to earn citizenship, a smaller number of U.S.-born Latinos, 78 percent, said illegal immigrants should be allowed to do so.

Though views such as De La Rosa’s are common among Latinos, they are rarely reflected among Latino leaders, said Steven Camarota, research director at the Center for Immigration Studies, a Washington, D.C. think tank that favors greater restrictions on immigration.

“It’s easy to tap into the views of the intellectual class, but harder to tap into the views of the common folks,” he said.

And because so much of the debate over illegal immigration comes off as anti-Hispanic, Latinos who favor greater restrictions on immigration are often reluctant to speak out.

“That’s extremely off-putting,” Camarota said. “Whatever their views, they keep it to themselves.”

Many Latinos fear being ostracized for their negative views of illegal immigrants, said Phoenix resident Frank Barrios, 64.

“There are a lot of Hispanics that are upset about the illegal just the same way as the Anglo population,” said Barrios, a third-generation Mexican-American who traces his family’s roots in Arizona to the 1870s. “That group is larger than many people would believe.”

South Phoenix resident Elsie Orta said she has no plans to participate in Monday’s march in Phoenix.

“Other Hispanics have told me to go to the demonstrations,” said Orta, 55, who said her mother is from New Mexico and her father’s family traces its roots to Spain. “I think it’s hurting them. They’re making a fool of themselves.”

The Phoenix native believes Arizona is under siege by illegal immigrants who speak Spanish, use public services and take jobs away from citizens. Illegal immigrants, she said, should be deported.
“They want us to cater to them all the time,” she said. “They’re coming over here, they’re taking our jobs. And now, everything has to be in English and Spanish? I don’t think so. They need to go back.”

    Ok, I need help.

There are obviously quite a few confused, hate-filled, racist liberals on this site..can you guys answer me something?

What exactly is the point of all the “immagrant” rallies around the country?????

dosen’t the President basically already hold their position? And, if so, who is it that they are protesting against?

And, if they are so “hard working” where do they find the time to be bused all over the country, protesting? I know I don’t have the time.

Also, what part of “illegal” confuses both you and them?

Another thing…why are these protest being sponsored / instigated / inflamed by marxist and socialist organizations (ANWER, Black Panthers, NAACP, etc.)

    hello??? Anyone???

    NOTE TO ALL FELLOW CONSERVATIVES.

I go on a lot of different blogs, and lefties usually don’t respond to anything, they are so consumed by Bush hatred.

I have found one thing that gets under their skin, however.

being called bigots and racists (which is what they are)

for some reason, this really bothers them…so, my advice is, whenever engaged in a heated debate with a bigot, racist democrat….let him know it.

let him know that by treating blacks like slaves, incapable of taking care of themselves without their democrat massas,THEY are the racists.

Let them know that, by excusing McKinney’s criminal behavior, they are excusing minorities because they expect so little from them, and THAT makes them racists.

I am serious… conservatives are the people for equality and opportunity for all, liberals are the racist bigots… what would they be without poverty and racism?? THEY WOULDN’T EXIST!! THEY LOVE POVERTY AND RACISM.

Way to go Mike. As someone who works around liberals I can verify what you say. You should hear them with regards to the Michael Steele issue here in Maryland. Deny, deny, deny….and if I might quote one person who said, “when you get into politics you can be subject to this sort of thing”. Personally I don’t excuse any of the racial slurs nor the criminal acts againt him from anyone.

Gee Mike I thought Waco was their most successful one. They had a 20 – 1 kill ratio. 84 innocent men, women and children versus 4 federal officers dead. All over supposed cases of child molestation and illegally converted automatic weapons. Neither charge was ever proven and at least on the weapons charge, the BATF refused to allow any outside sources to inspect the weapons for conversion before destroying them.

12-FAO I won’t argue the weapons, but the child molestation has been brought by survivors..Technically we can’t say he is guilty as there was no trial, but according to medical reports, some of these young girls were molested.

    13. Peejz.. aren’t people “innocent until proven guilty”?

or do we just incinerate them first, ask questions later.

I only wish liberals took that stand with muslim animals who are hell bent on killing us.

Mike- I am in no way defending the government..I just have a real distaste for child molestation….

molesters typically get what coming to them, either in this world or the next…… they cannot stop, and therefore usually make a mistake and get caught..and we all know that they are targeting in prisons for some good old fashioned Karma.

However, something about the Waco thing is really really fishy to me.. having been lied to by the government over and over and over and over again, about virtually every aspect of that case, what makes you believe the claims of abuse??????

When it comes to that mass murder at the hands of Klinton / Reno…I believe NOTHING, except what I saw……tanks puncturing the walls and inserting incindiary devices…. a news reporter actually uttering the following…..

“We are not sure of the cause of the flames….wait…..hold on….we are getting confirmation from the justice dept that the fire was started from INSIDE the house”..

    oh really?????
