Today is the day for the big boycott! Let us know how this is impacting your area! As of 9:45 a.m., the rallies hadn’t started…but let me know what you are seeing and I will post national links.
Consider it a live blogging session!

Workers, students join immigrant day boycott
Immigrant students didn’t show up at school, restaurants and factories were closed for lack of workers, but much of life went on normally as the national “Day Without Immigrants” protest was observed across Minnesota.
From Michelle Malkin:
NJ Attorney General Zulima Farber supports Illegal Alien strike day.So does NY Attorney General Eliot Spitzer. Hans at CEI’s Open Market reports:
Yet, amazingly, New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer is threatening New York businesses that require their employees to show up for their scheduled shifts today, arguing that they generally cannot discipline those who boycott their jobs because attending rallies for illegal aliens is “protected” activity under federal labor law.

“You only prove me more right each time, Robert.
You know what I’m talking about.
“
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Behold the above, the last refuge of a poster that has nothing more to say, has run out of comebacks, run out of ideas. This trick, a very common one seen many times before, is the equivalent of the “I know you are-but what am I?” comeback popularized by Pee Wee Herman. It absolutely lacks substance, is hackneyed, and while still seen, is typically the last possible comeback left for the poster who has nothing left to offer on their own.
I am sooooo upset, and dont know who else to voice my opinion !!
Today, I watched and read of the ability of ILLEGAL people in this nation given the ‘right’ to protest against the laws of this country, that THEY have illegally come to. And watch as they wear our FLAG, and claiming that we need them- that we should not have laws to sustain our nation.
How does this happen !!! Where did we go soooo wrong- that they can have these “free rights” without legally being a part of OUR country! Would we dare to do that in their country- I think NOT. Would their goverment allow such a thing- I think NOT. We should have called out the national guard and gathered them all in and sent them HOME to their country.. and given them the opportunity to come and do it RIGHT – to come to our wonderful country “Legally”. Accept our laws and abide by them. AND learn our LANGUAGE- instead of us bowing to their needs and their language. If they really desired to be here, work in our communities, and live in our neighborhoods, and go to our schools… then they should feel the desire and want to learn our English language! We would not need to have a ‘dual’ language, so that the illegals would feel welcome! We would not have to see all our products on our country’s shelves written in both languages. Churches, businesses, schools, etc, cater to those that do want to put in the time to learn the language of the Country they desire to be a part of as a nation.
I think the walk out was good for one reason- to teach the Employers that they have done WRONG in hiring illegals, and allowed an outlet for them to come into this country. And worse to be paid in American money- so they can send it back HOME to their country to help the rest of their families to enter into our country illegally !!!!
I think the crack down should be centered not only on the borders, but these Employers that insist on hiring illegals. They KNOW what they are doing – they are breaking the laws of this nation too.
I do hope that I have gotten my feelings across. I know that this country was founded on immigrants, but those ancestors fought to make this a free nation, with rights, laws and priviledges that they have won and earned. Our country is asking only that of others who desire to be part of this nation. I do not think that it is asking to much for others around the world to abide by those laws and come to us legally and feel the freedom that only this nation offers to her citizens.
SF..”Hey Peter man….watch out for the corn hole!”
..and I ask you again, if these mexicans have such an amazing work ethic, why is there country such a shit pit?
give me a fucking break.
SOME IDEAS for immigration laws:
1. Only professionals or investors can immigrate, no unskilled laborers. Investors must be able to invest at least 40,000 times the daily average wage.
2. Immigrants may purchase property, but locations and availability will be limited. Oceanfront property cannot be purchased by immigrants. It is exclusively for citizens born in the country.
3. Immigrants cannot vote nor can they be elected to any public office.
4. Immigrants cannot collect any type of government assistance.
5. Immigrants cannot protest the country’s government, policies or president.
6. Immigrants cannot display a flag of a foreign country.
7. Immigrants who have illegally entered the country will be imprisoned.
Sound kind of harsh?
Well, these are laws that are currently part of the immigration laws of, you guessed it, Mexico!
Here is a link from the Star Tribune about how we were affected in Minneapolis and St. Paul. There doesn’t seem to much difference, but we’re not a city like LA or SF.
I made more phone calls yesterday to find a Chipotle that was open. All of the closed Chipotle’s had the same recording on their voicemails that went something like this:
“We are closed today so that our employees can attend the rallies and show support if they wish to do so. Obviously, we would rather be open, but because we are short-staffed, we are forced to close for today. The Chipotle on St. Anthony in Minneapolis is open, and we apologize for any inconvenience.”
That is not verbatim, just how I remember it. I called the open location and asked them if the restaurants were closed because they were shortstaffed, or if they decided ahead of time to give people the day off. I was told they closed because they were short-staffed, and that it was not a corporate decision.
Looks like you can still enjoy their burritos, Mike.
Never.
I will NEVER patronize them… Qdoba was open for business in Philly, that’s where I get my burritos.
we are the 4th largest city in America and the BIG turnout was a couple dozen criminals..woo hooo.
Why, because they were forced to close when they didn’t want to?
100- if the employees that forced them to close are illegal, who’s fault is that?
I’m pretty sure they’re legal. Chipotle is a fairly large chain across the U.S. I highly doubt they participate in illegal activities.
They should then fire the absentee employees, or face the boycott.
102- Don’t be so surprised. They may not know they are doing it. My friend called me yesterday to tell me they had to let 3 mexicans go yesterday. The insurance Co., called to let her know that the 3 had used the same SS #. This is a small emloyer (60 people). Why the payroll service didn’t question this is beyond me, but insurance did. Her family hires all kinds of people and the starting wage is $15.00/hr with insurance after 90 days and a 401K profit sharing plan. She wasn’t seeking them, they sought her out and took advantage.
110. because they are all criminals.
Did you guys see this?
There has been a Spanish version of the Star Spangled Banner longer than it has been our national anthem.
“…according to the Library of Congress, the United States Bureau of Education commissioned a Spanish-language version of “The Star Spangled Banner” en español way back in 1919.”
yeah, there was also slavery before 1860, and Marijuana and Cocaine were both legal well into the 20th Century…
what’s your point?
The point is that the rise of xenophobia against Mexican immigrants and migrants comes in waves, and apparently our government was progressive enough in 1919 to print Spanish-language Natty Anthems.
Do you think our government is progressive enough to print Spanish-language National Anthems TODAY?
Do you think people like you would gnash your teeth and tear at your clothes if they did???
The point is, are we REGRESSING as a society with conservatives in a position of power?
well, if we are, hopefully we’ll regress to the pre-1920′s era and LEGALIZE!!!
MR. PRESIDENT, I’M HEADED TO MEXICO
Miki Kilo
April 1, 2006
Dear President Bush:
I’m about to plan a little trip with my family and
extended family, and I would like to ask you to assist me. I’m going to
walk across the border from the U.S. into Mexico, and I need to make a
few arrangements. I know you can help with this.
I plan to skip all the legal stuff like visas,
passports, immigration quotas and laws. I’m sure they handle those things the
same way you do here.
So, would you mind telling your buddy, President
Vicente Fox, that I’m on my way over? Please let him know that I will be
expecting the following:
1. Free medical care for my entire family.
2. English-speaking government bureaucrats for all
services I might need, whether I use them or not.
3. All government forms need to be printed in English.
4. I want my kids to be taught by English-speaking
teachers.
5. Schools need to include classes on American culture
and history.
6. I want my kids to see the American flag flying on
the top of the flag pole at their school with the Mexican flag flying
lower down.
7. Please plan to feed my kids at school for both
breakfast and lunch.
8. I will need a local Mexican driver’s license so I
can get easy access to government services.
9. I do not plan to have any car insurance, and I
won’t make any effort to learn local traffic laws.
10. In case one of the Mexican police officers does
not get the memo from Pres. Fox to leave me alone, please be sure that
all police officers speak English.
11. I plan to fly the U.S. flag from my house top, put
flag decals on my car, and have a gigantic celebration on July 4th. I
do not want any complaints or negative comments from the locals.
12. I would also like to have a nice job without
paying any taxes, and don’t enforce any labor laws or tax laws.
13. Please tell all the people in the country to be
extremely nice and never say a critical word about me, or about the
strain I might place on the economy.
I know this is an easy request because you already do
all these things for all the people who come to the U.S. from Mexico. I
am sure that Pres. Fox won’t mind returning the favor if you ask
him nicely.
Thank you so much for your kind help.
Sincerely,
Mike Kilo
Have a great one!!
“well, if we are, hopefully we’ll regress to the pre-1920′s era and LEGALIZE!!!”
Seriously?
“Candidate Bush Would ‘Sing The Star-Spangled Banner in Spanish’ At Hispanic Festivals “
President Bush, 4/28/06:
“I think the national anthem ought to be sung in English, and I think people who want to be a citizen of this country ought to learn English and they ought to learn to sing the national anthem in English.”
But in his book American Dynasty, Kevin Phillips notes that during Bush’s first presidential campaign, he would often sing the national anthem in Spanish. From pg. 142:
When visiting cities like Chicago, Milwaukee, or Philadelphia, in pivotal states, he would drop in at Hispanic festivals and parties, sometimes joining in singing “The Star-Spangled Banner”in Spanish, sometimes partying with a “Viva Bush”mariachi band flown in from Texas.
Hypocrite.
Liberalism must NEVER be legalized!
apparently our government was progressive enough in 1919 to print Spanish-language Natty Anthems.
Do you think our government is progressive enough to print Spanish-language National Anthems TODAY?
But San Fran, we no longer have Spanish speaking territories in the Phillipines and the Puerto Ricans have made it abundantly clear that they have no desire to become a state. They simply want to remain a protectorate so they can collect US benefits without paying any taxes to the US unless they happen to come to the US to work. Hence we really have no need for a Spanish version of the Star Spangled Banner anymore. Unlike 1919, we simply don’t have any Spanish speaking territories who may want to become states any longer.
As for the Boycott, while a few Mom and Pop restaurants were closed, I really appreciated being able to do my daily 200 mile drive in the substantially lighter traffic. It was also really nice when I pulled up to the drive through at Del Taco to be able to speak to someone who spoke understandable English.
118. Of Course.
The war on drugs is one war we DON’T NEED TO BE FIGHTING.
