Tell Us About Your May Day Boycott

By: Pam On: May/1/06 - 125 Comments

Today is the day for the big boycott! Let us know how this is impacting your area! As of 9:45 a.m., the rallies hadn’t started…but let me know what you are seeing and I will post national links.

Consider it a live blogging session!

UPDATES:

‘A Day Without Immigrants’

From Alyssa in MN

Workers, students join immigrant day boycott
Immigrant students didn’t show up at school, restaurants and factories were closed for lack of workers, but much of life went on normally as the national “Day Without Immigrants” protest was observed across Minnesota.

From Michelle Malkin:
NJ Attorney General Zulima Farber supports Illegal Alien strike day.

So does NY Attorney General Eliot Spitzer. Hans at CEI’s Open Market reports:

Yet, amazingly, New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer is threatening New York businesses that require their employees to show up for their scheduled shifts today, arguing that they generally cannot discipline those who boycott their jobs because attending rallies for illegal aliens is “protected” activity under federal labor law.

Here is what I am doing to participate in the boycott.

    1. I saved all my vendor orders from last week to place TODAY.

    2. I will go shopping after work today (need some clothes)

    3. I will note any business that I see closed today and NEVER PATRONIZE THEM.

Nice going, criminals and SF..way to help your country.

I am working TWO jobs today. If I see any businesses closed for the boycott, I am boycotting them PERMANENTLY!

    Boycott Updates

I don’t have the ability to go check out the boycotts (the military can be pretty demanding about work), so I’d like all bloggers who has boycott stories to send me a trackback, and I’ll post up a link to

I got a good question for you..

If these illegal aliens (mexicans..let’s be honest here) are so damn hard working….why don’t they work hard in Mexico and make it not such a shithole that people are running from???? hmmm????

“Nice going, criminals and SF..way to help your country.”

Come on, you guys are witnessing history here, try and keep an open mind!

Besides, this whole thing could fizzle – I think they might have hyped it up too much.

SF Libs donut shop was closed this morning…off to a rocky start!

“If these illegal aliens (mexicans..let’s be honest here) are so damn hard working:.why don’t they work hard in Mexico and make it not such a shithole that people are running from????”

    You know the answer, Mike.

It’s not something the average citizen really has a lot of control over down there.

And besides, it’s simple economics. Low wages there, high wages here…it’s a given that people will risk death for a chance chance at such “wealth”.

And not all of them are Mexicans. I have a close family member who is an illegal, and they are eastern european.

5- They have no problem organizing here, why not at home?Enough with the excuses. The truth of the matter is, that given the choice, these people would rather stay in Mexico if they had an economy to work for.

I have a close family member who is an illegal, and they are eastern european. – do you think we think that is any more acceptable than the illegal Mexican?

Today I’m going to be blogging almost exclusively about immigration topics as a counter to the “Day Without Immigrants” boycott. So I decided to do an blog round-up to track as much as possible being written across the blogosphere.

SF, do you eat Indian??? there is a really good little Indian Buffet somewhere around russian hill…maybe powell? I forget, but it was awesome.

of course they are not ALL mexicans, mostly though…. will the illegal alien gang members be taking the day off from peddling dope, running whores and killing people???

No prob Peejz, I’ll try and post today on the issue when I can…

“The truth of the matter is, that given the choice, these people would rather stay in Mexico if they had an economy to work for.”

Probably. And there is something to be said about our American freedoms in general, but you are probably right, without the wage thing the migration would be a heckava lot less than it is now.

Regarding my Eastern European “illegal” family member, yes, I think she is probably more accepted into her community and neighborhood because she is white skinned, and doesn’t blare tejano music…sad but true.

Will do Peejz.. I’ll keep you posted on the Philly File!

I have to give you a little anecdote though..I went to the Ringling Bros. Circus on Friday (I know, it’s corny, but my girlfriend likes that shit). And they opened the show the national anthem. Clearly the crowd was quite diverse, and there were many mexicans and african-americans sitting near us.

As the woman began singing, all of the caucasians and their children, and all the Mexicans within my view, stood, removed their hats and showed respect.

The African americans right in front of me, a group of maybe 50…did not stand, continued screaming, throwing food on the ground and just generally paid no attention whatsoever.

I was pissed off to the point of being physically ill.

I always hate to bring race into anything, because that’s what racists do…. but I have to tell you what I saw…in other words, even illegal aliens stand for our national anthem, while some others refuse to.

    May 1, 2006 - 10:21 AM on May 1st, 2006

A little after 9am here in SF and the festivities have begun.

I went out onto the street to see what all the noise was about, and there was a group of about 100 or so protesters (honestly, most of them were “hip” urban city kids, not many ethnic faces in this small crowd) riding their bikes in circles in the street, blocking traffic, banging on pots and pans, some street theater and lots of signs saying things like “support communities, not borders” – “no human being is illegal” and the like.

Looks like this is the warm up for the bigger event this afternoon.

These kind of urban youth protesters that I saw are the same ones who protest the War and everything else under the sun here in SF. I should know, I’m usually one of them!

(not today, SF Lib in his suit and tie…don’t think I’d fit in )

So far, no big immigrant groups in the street – mostly young 20 somethings. But, give it time; it’s not even 9:30am here…

  16. mike kilo
    May 1, 2006 - 10:22 AM on May 1st, 2006

so, in other words, these “protests” are just an excuse of SF stoners, bike messengers, white guilt liberals and hippies to get out and party?

    sounds about right.

  17. San Francisco Liberal
    May 1, 2006 - 10:30 AM on May 1st, 2006

Well Mike, I reckon this is just the begining…

As I was typing, I heard chanting and banging, looked out my office window 17 floors down in the streets – protesters (maybe 100 or so – mostly the bike messenger hip kid crowd) were out in the streets walking, blocking traffic…

cops on either side walking with them, keeping an eye on the group…

    lot’s of signs and banners…

I think there are several “bubbles” of groups in the streets waiting to join up with the main march this afternoon. That’s my take on it so far, here is SF.

10–In all fairness, they may have been Jehovah’s Witnesses. JW’s do not stand for the pledge of allegiance or the national anthem. HOWEVER, they are supposed to sit quietly and respectfully, so who knows. I don’t disrespect those people for not standing, but I do disrespect them for talking and screaming.

several hundred people are marching in Camden….probably a good thing, since the days festivities may put a dent in the city’s horrific murder rate.

Philadelphia Catholics are apparently showing solidarity..they are in as big a need as the democrats, apparently.

No major impact at Atlantic City casinos…..

Dick Cheney is in town, at an event at the World Affairs Council… no protests, no problems.

in other words, all is quiet in the People’s Republic of Philadelphia, the corrupt mayor and his minions continue to piss our money down the drain, “urban” minorities continue to rape, rob and murder at will…

    another day in paradise.

Regarding your circus experience (BTW – not to sound preachy, but circuses treat their animals very poorly, especially Ringling bros.)…

There is no excuse for the behavior you saw. Some individuals (I don’t think race has anything to do with it) are raised differently from you and me, and may not have had someone in their lives like you and I have to tell them what is proper and right when the anthem comes on, or even other things like “don’t yell” – “sit down in your seat” and the like.

Believe me, I see it EVERYDAY on the bus. You just need to look at the individuals, not the group, and say to yourself “they just weren’t raised like I was”…and move on.

I agree, there were some animal rights protestors there, and I felt pretty shitty…..those elephants DO NOT look happy.

however, there are really not that many animals in it anymore, the few horses there sure looked better off than the sadsacks hauling around tourists in Old City philadelphia, and the dogs are in heaven jumping and catching shit.

but you are right, I did feel bad for those elephants.

regarding the disrespect shown toward our national anthem, country, myself and every other veteran who has fought for this country..there is no excuse, I don’t care how they were raised…they weren’t fucking raised on Pluto.

Not horsecrap, as you so eloquently put it. It’s against their religion to stand, but they also must show respect. Obviously those people were not showing respect, and it was in extremely poor taste of them to do so.

Great, you stand up in Canada. It’s not against your religion, though. I personally think it’s in poor taste to call someone else’s religious beliefs horsecrap, whether you agree with it or not.

23–No, I am not insane. I was just talking about a religion that I am not a part of. Religion and common human courtesy do not intertwine. I don’t know what religion, if any, you are part of. But I doubt that if you were in the presence of JW’s, that you would practice what they believe. I have a feeling that you would sit quietly because you do not believe what they do. i.e., sitting quietly and respectfully, without participating.

23–One more thing, just so you understand why they do not stand or partake in the pledge of allegiance or the national anthem, it is because they interpret all pledges of allegiance to national emblems as idolatry. Make fun of it all you want, but right or wrong, it is their belief. And as long as it is not violence, I would rather see someone adhere to their beliefs than give in and participate just because they’re ridiculed for not doing so.

You have your religion, they have theirs. As you have disgust for them, I’m positive that some people would have disgust for you and your views. Does that make you less of a person? It goes both ways.

For starters, they work at jobs that pay them super low wages.

How would YOU like to work long hours and get paid diddly-squat for it? You probably wouldn’t…

And I think we have a problem with our American youth and unskilled workers, they aren’t lining up in droves to work the low wage jobs these migrants are doing.

I can’t imagine scores of high-school drop-outs working the fields, can you?

    Please.

Who could YOU think of paying $6 an hour to take care of your two kids while you’re at work?

Many of these people have superior work ethics that you just can’t find anymore with our unskilled and our drop-outs. You’re dreaming if you think those bums would do the work, do a great job, and not complain about the low pay.

I just mean that sometimes I do things that are very “american”..sometimes I spell words like colour, and use european slang, I also exhibit a lot of asian and buddhist tendencies, etc… a real hodge podge.

for example.. I eat european style, meaning always holding the knife and fork (whereas most americans cut with the knife, put it down and change the fork to eat)

I also exhibit chinese influence in situations of compliments, etc.. for example.. I play guitar in a band, and if someone approaches me after a gig and says, “Hey man, you were really great, your a good guitar player”

the american response is.. “oh, yeah, thanks man.. ”
they chinese response is.. “no, I messed up this part, I should practice more”

I know it’s usually ritualist and phoney, but it’s also a sign of humility and respect, and there is NOTHING more disgusting than arrogance…and unfortunately all too many Americans are arrogant..and annoying.

40-And I think we have a problem with our American youth and unskilled workers, they aren’t lining up in droves to work the low wage jobs these migrants are doing.

I can’t imagine scores of high-school drop-outs working the fields, can you? SF please stop perpetuating this outright lie. If we were talking about jobs that are stictly in the fields, you may have a leg to stand on, but as it is, the jobs that we are talking about are: lawn services, domestic help, construction, and hotel services. These employers are being enabled by law enforcement to break the law. These were jobs that Americans had prior to illegals taking them. Just look at the Katrina cleanup. The blacks in the NOLA area were making $15.00/Hr + until the illegals arrived and the Americans were let go! So don’t make it sound like they won’t do them, they are being taken from them!

I eat the same way. It takes too much time to switch hands with every bite.

I agree with you that many people don’t show proper respect afforded in certain circumstances. Unfortunately, not all people have the same definition of respect, and that’s where everything falls apart.

When I see someone like those people that were talking, screaming etc, I absolutely think they’re being disrespectful. And although I disagree with them and the way they handled themselves in that situation, it doesn’t make me hate them. They’ll eventually learn, but you know what? They’re not going to become more respectful of other people just because someone hates them for their actions. In my experience, people learn more when taught, not chastised.

  64. mike kilo
    May 1, 2006 - 02:00 PM on May 1st, 2006

Unfortunately, those people won’t learn. They are taught from day one that America is not for them, dosen’t want them, is set up against them, enslaved them, etc.

And the ironic part of that is…the ones who are telling them that are the ones who benefit most from keeping them like that………liberals and black race hustlers.

It cannot be a coincidence that I could literally see hundreds of people near me, and EVERY white, asian, other person was standing in respect, and virtually EVERY black was sitting, screaming, throwing food, etc.

it’s a sad state of affairs.

    WOW.

I’m a very curious person, so I called to see if there would be a recording of any sort explaining why they were closed. Someone answered, and here is our conversation:

Me: I was just calling to see if you were open today.
    Chipotle: No, we’re actually closed.
Me: Oh, because of the protests?
C: Yeah, we’re closed because our employees wanted to participate.
Me: OK. I’m just wondering, did you close because they all called in, or did you tell them you would close to support them and give them the day off to participate?
C: We’re supporting our employees decision to participate. We’re getting a lot of phone calls, so check the Strib* tomorrow and there might be a story or something.
    Me: OK, thanks.

Behold the above, the last refuge of a poster that has nothing more to say, has run out of comebacks, run out of ideas. This trick, a very common one seen many times before, is the equivalent of the “I know you are-but what am I?” comeback popularized by Pee Wee Herman. I am sooooo upset, and dont know who else to voice my opinion !!
Today, I watched and read of the ability of ILLEGAL people in this nation given the ‘right’ to protest against the laws of this country, that THEY have illegally come to. And watch as they wear our FLAG, and claiming that we need them- that we should not have laws to sustain our nation.
How does this happen !!! Where did we go soooo wrong- that they can have these “free rights” without legally being a part of OUR country! Would we dare to do that in their country- I think NOT. Would their goverment allow such a thing- I think NOT. We should have called out the national guard and gathered them all in and sent them HOME to their country.. and given them the opportunity to come and do it RIGHT – to come to our wonderful country “Legally”. Accept our laws and abide by them. AND learn our LANGUAGE- instead of us bowing to their needs and their language. If they really desired to be here, work in our communities, and live in our neighborhoods, and go to our schools… then they should feel the desire and want to learn our English language! We would not need to have a ‘dual’ language, so that the illegals would feel welcome! We would not have to see all our products on our country’s shelves written in both languages. Churches, businesses, schools, etc, cater to those that do want to put in the time to learn the language of the Country they desire to be a part of as a nation.
I think the walk out was good for one reason- to teach the Employers that they have done WRONG in hiring illegals, and allowed an outlet for them to come into this country. And worse to be paid in American money- so they can send it back HOME to their country to help the rest of their families to enter into our country illegally !!!!
I think the crack down should be centered not only on the borders, but these Employers that insist on hiring illegals. They KNOW what they are doing – they are breaking the laws of this nation too.
I do hope that I have gotten my feelings across. I know that this country was founded on immigrants, but those ancestors fought to make this a free nation, with rights, laws and priviledges that they have won and earned. Our country is asking only that of others who desire to be part of this nation. I do not think that it is asking to much for others around the world to abide by those laws and come to us legally and feel the freedom that only this nation offers to her citizens.

    SOME IDEAS for immigration laws:

    1. Only professionals or investors can immigrate, no unskilled laborers. Investors must be able to invest at least 40,000 times the daily average wage.

    2. Immigrants may purchase property, but locations and availability will be limited. Oceanfront property cannot be purchased by immigrants. It is exclusively for citizens born in the country.

    3. Immigrants cannot vote nor can they be elected to any public office.

    4. Immigrants cannot collect any type of government assistance.

    5. Immigrants cannot protest the country’s government, policies or president.

    6. Immigrants cannot display a flag of a foreign country.

    7. Immigrants who have illegally entered the country will be imprisoned.

    Sound kind of harsh?

Well, these are laws that are currently part of the immigration laws of, you guessed it, Mexico!

Here is a link from the Star Tribune about how we were affected in Minneapolis and St. Paul. There doesn’t seem to much difference, but we’re not a city like LA or SF.

I made more phone calls yesterday to find a Chipotle that was open. All of the closed Chipotle’s had the same recording on their voicemails that went something like this:

“We are closed today so that our employees can attend the rallies and show support if they wish to do so. Obviously, we would rather be open, but because we are short-staffed, we are forced to close for today. The Chipotle on St. Anthony in Minneapolis is open, and we apologize for any inconvenience.”

That is not verbatim, just how I remember it. I called the open location and asked them if the restaurants were closed because they were shortstaffed, or if they decided ahead of time to give people the day off. I was told they closed because they were short-staffed, and that it was not a corporate decision.

    expecting the following:

    1. Free medical care for my entire family.

    2. English-speaking government bureaucrats for all
services I might need, whether I use them or not.

    3. All government forms need to be printed in English.

    4. I want my kids to be taught by English-speaking
    teachers.

    5. Schools need to include classes on American culture
    and history.

    6. I want my kids to see the American flag flying on
the top of the flag pole at their school with the Mexican flag flying
    lower down.

    7. Please plan to feed my kids at school for both
    breakfast and lunch.

    8. I will need a local Mexican driver’s license so I
can get easy access to government services.

    9. I do not plan to have any car insurance, and I
won’t make any effort to learn local traffic laws.

    10. In case one of the Mexican police officers does
not get the memo from Pres. Fox to leave me alone, please be sure that
    all police officers speak English.

    11. I plan to fly the U.S. flag from my house top, put
flag decals on my car, and have a gigantic celebration on July 4th. I
do not want any complaints or negative comments from the locals.

    12. I would also like to have a nice job without
paying any taxes, and don’t enforce any labor laws or tax laws.

    13. Please tell all the people in the country to be
extremely nice and never say a critical word about me, or about the
strain I might place on the economy.

I know this is an easy request because you already do
all these things for all the people who come to the U.S. from Mexico. I
am sure that Pres. Fox won’t mind returning the favor if you ask
    him nicely.

Thank you so much for your kind help.

    Sincerely,

    Mike Kilo

    Have a great one!!

“Candidate Bush Would ‘Sing The Star-Spangled Banner in Spanish’ At Hispanic Festivals “

    President Bush, 4/28/06:

“I think the national anthem ought to be sung in English, and I think people who want to be a citizen of this country ought to learn English and they ought to learn to sing the national anthem in English.”

But in his book American Dynasty, Kevin Phillips notes that during Bush’s first presidential campaign, he would often sing the national anthem in Spanish. From pg. 142:

When visiting cities like Chicago, Milwaukee, or Philadelphia, in pivotal states, he would drop in at Hispanic festivals and parties, sometimes joining in singing “The Star-Spangled Banner”in Spanish, sometimes partying with a “Viva Bush”mariachi band flown in from Texas.

    Hypocrite.

apparently our government was progressive enough in 1919 to print Spanish-language Natty Anthems.

Do you think our government is progressive enough to print Spanish-language National Anthems TODAY?

But San Fran, we no longer have Spanish speaking territories in the Phillipines and the Puerto Ricans have made it abundantly clear that they have no desire to become a state. They simply want to remain a protectorate so they can collect US benefits without paying any taxes to the US unless they happen to come to the US to work. Hence we really have no need for a Spanish version of the Star Spangled Banner anymore. Unlike 1919, we simply don’t have any Spanish speaking territories who may want to become states any longer.

As for the Boycott, while a few Mom and Pop restaurants were closed, I really appreciated being able to do my daily 200 mile drive in the substantially lighter traffic. It was also really nice when I pulled up to the drive through at Del Taco to be able to speak to someone who spoke understandable English.

    118. Of Course.

The war on drugs is one war we DON’T NEED TO BE FIGHTING.
