Patrick Kennedy Involved In Crash: Coverup?
UPDATE 4 His second statement on the accident! This must have slipped his mind when the news broke this afternoon!
Kennedy, D-R.I., addressed the issue after a spate of news reports. His initial statement said: “I consumed no alcohol prior to the incident.”‘
Later, however, he issued a longer statement saying the attending physician for Congress had prescribed Phenergan on Tuesday to treat Kennedy’s gastroenteritis.
Kennedy said he returned to his Capitol Hill home on Wednesday evening after a final series of votes in Congress and took “prescribed” amounts of Phenergan and Ambien, another prescribed drug that he occasionally takes to fall asleep.“Some time around 2:45 a.m., I drove the few blocks to the Capitol Complex believing I needed to vote,” his second statement said. “Apparently, I was disoriented from the medication.”
Why does it sound like something Teddy came up with?
From The Drudge Report:
Officers Claim Brass Interfered in Investigation of Rep. Kennedy Incident… Police labor union officials asked acting Chief Christopher McGaffin this afternoon to allow a Capitol Police officer to complete his investigation into an early-morning car crash involving Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-R.I.).
According to a letter sent by Officer Greg Baird, acting chairman of the USCP FOP, the wreck took place at approximately 2:45 a.m. Thursday when Kennedy’s car, operating with its running lights turned off, narrowly missed colliding with a Capitol Police cruiser and smashed into a security barricade at First and C streets Southeast.
UPDATE 1From Michelle Malkin a link from WUSA TV:
9 News has learned U.S. Capitol police officers are concerned about the handling of an accident involving Congressman Patrick Kennedy (D-Rhode Island) about 3 a.m. this morning.
Rep. Kennedy was reportedly behind the wheel of a green Ford Mustang when it crashed into a security barrier at 1st and “C” streets Southeast. There are no reports of injuries. A Boston TV station is reporting Kennedy told officers he was late for a vote. We are told police drove him home after conferring with higher-ups in the department. So far, Kennedy HAS NOT been charged. A spokesman for his office told CNN that alcohol was NOT involved.
The head of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 1, Lou Cannon, told 9 News that he’s concerned that Kennedy may have received special treatment and this could be a case where “rank has its privilege.”
Cannon also told 9 News that officers noticed the car swerving, looking as if it was going to make a U-turn.
9 News reporter Stacey Cohan spoke to Kennedy’s press secretary at his congressional office in Rhode Island, who said she is looking into the situation, but does not have any information right now.
Congressman Patrick Kennedy is Ted Kennedy’s son. He is currently serving his sixth term as the Democratic Congressman from Rhode Island. He sits on the powerful House Appropriations Committee.
UPDATE 2:
Kennedy Statement
Kennedy, D-R.I., addressed the issue after a spate of news reports.
“I was involved in a traffic accident last night at First and C Street SE near the U.S. Capitol,” Kennedy said in a written statement released by his office. “I consumed no alcohol prior to the incident. I will fully cooperate with the Capitol Police in whatever investigation they choose to undertake.”
Kennedy appeared to be intoxicated when he crashed his car into a barrier on Capitol Hill early Thursday morning, said Louis P. Cannon, president of the Washington chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police.
Cannon, who was not there, said the officers involved in the accident were instructed by an official “above the rank of patrolman” to take Kennedy home.
No sobriety tests were conducted at the scene.
UPDATE 3: WRKO talk show host Howie Carr has a police report from a separate Pat Kennedy car crash two weeks ago:

Note his handwriting!

Kennedys and Driving, Just Mix and Stir
Patrick Kennedy, the Rhode Island Congressman and son of prominent Democratic Senator Ted Kennedy, apparently had a little trouble behind the wheel (from Drudge)
olice labor union officials asked acting Chief Christopher McGaffin this afternoon to all…

well what’s new? that is the first family of the new world order for you, its nothing was he beaten by the cops? was he put in jail? did he kill anyone yet? did he call hillary yet? or bill? or Bush or Bin Laden for help in this little matter?
May 4, 2006 - 07:47 PM on May 4th, 2006
This is the same idiot who got up on a table in a bar last year and proclaimed he didn’t have a real job, he was a Congressman and also that he didn’t need to work because he was a Kennedy.
Why should anyone expect any less favorable treatment for Ted’s son? His bodyguard was arrested for bringing TWO FULLY AUTOMATIC UZIS and a 9mm Beretta handgun into the Capital building in violation of the DC ordinances banning the possession of weapons with capacities in excess of ten rounds. The bodyguard was arrested, booked, fingerprinted, and sat in a cell for the three hours it took to find the Senator. Within a few minutes of Teddy finding out about the arrested, the bodyguard was released and charges dropped.
May 4, 2006 - 07:47 PM on May 4th, 2006
What is left to be determined is will Rep. Kennedy resign? Should Senator Ted Kennedy resign?
Should Nancy Pelosi resign?
Should Howard Dean resign?
All legitimate questions. The same thing was heard in the MSM ad nauseum after the Cheney hunting accident, and this is vastly more serious than that was. The precedent has been set; they brought it on, so this is an entirely legitimate point and line of questioning.

“…the Cheney hunting accident, and this is vastly more serious than that was.”
What?! A Vice President of the United States accidentally shooting a man in the face is far more serious and noteworthy than a Congressman crashing his car while on prescription drugs.
I mean, the Cheney accident is history - we all know about V.P Aaron Burr…
…nobody knows or cares if some Congressman from 1806 crashed his carriage drunk on wine.
May 5, 2006 - 02:15 AM on May 5th, 2006
Sorry, SFL. Yer wrong, by a mile.
The Cheney accident was just that. An accident, on private property.
The Kennedy deal was DUI. He was driving on a public roadway without headlights, he easily could have killed someone.
Yes, DUI, a crime. It doesn’t matter whether he was on prescription medication, issued by a Doctor—if you are under the influence, it’s DUI.
Of course, criminal activity is nothing new for this miscreant, or for his Dad, Chapatraitor Ted.
Don’t take on this case. I know you’re a contrarian, but this one’s a sure loser.

Actually this is history as well. This is just another example of the Kennedy family flaunting the fact that the rules don’t apply to them. The police had no business not following procedure. But the police would not have been in that position had he not been on the road at 3:00 a.m. putting lives in danger. BTW..a bar patron verified seeing him having drinks!

This is perfect example of the Democrat Culture of Corruption. The person from San Francisco can’t even admit that Kennedy isn’t betreated like the average citizen. He won’t address the corruption that allows Patrick not only to stay in Congress, but to not lose anything. Just shows who is blind and unreasoning here.

The lesson here is that a good many of our elected officials are taking advantage of the public trust while creating a ruling class of family and friends who have too much influence on American policy. This is not the way it is supposed to be.
…

Mike, they have to sit and take it. Their hypocrisies have caught up to them. They know what they should do, but aren’t honest or ethical enough to throw Kennedy under the bus.

“This is perfect example of the Democrat Culture of Corruption. The person from San Francisco can’t even admit that Kennedy isn’t betreated like the average citizen.”
No problem, I’ll admit it. KENNEDY ISN’T BEING TREATED LIKE AN AVERAGE CITIZEN.
Clearly, if you or I did this we’d be taken to the slammer, if only to sober up. These cops drove him home. (!)
Did he even get a citation? I don’t think so.
“He won’t address the corruption that allows Patrick not only to stay in Congress, but to not lose anything.”
Corruption that allows him to stay in congress, what do you mean? This is a car accident, not a scheme to bilk taxpayers out of billions, or some bribery scandal invloving lobbyists…car accidents happen all the time, bribes do not.
Let’s not make a mountain out of a mole hill, here…
“
id you see how fast SFL brought out the “Cheney Hunting Accidentâ€???????”
Hey, I didn’t bring that up! I was responding to Roberts claim that this is more serious than the VP shooting a man.
No one on the Left that I’m aware of is sticking up for this man, he drove when he shouldn’t have drove. Pure and simple. That’s probably why no Left Blogs are talking about it. Accidents happen to everyone…
But calling for his head is nothing more than political nit-picking…you guys are just thirsty for revenge after our take-down of your House Majority Leader…
There is an investigation underway, and everything we say about “corruption” or “special treatment” is pure speculation until we know for sure if this man will be charged at all, or if he’ll face some fines.
Just shows who is blind and unreasoning here.

Would you like to see the statistics on how many Americans are involved in car accidents where prescription drugs were involved?
You are 100% right, he is very lucky he didn’t hurt anyone or himself.
The accident itself isn’t the problem here, in my opinion. That the police took him home instead of jail to “sober up” might be a problem.

Exactly the opposite is true. Already this is provoking a firestorm of ourtrage. The drunken/addicted son of Chapaquiddick Ted, getting elitist treatment, another crime covered up. There are so many levels here, so many issues, so many facets to this case.
This will be talked about for decades. Cheney’s hunting accident will be scarcely remembered. You are precisely, totally, and absolutely on the wrong side of this argument.
