How Far With The Left-Wing Bloggers Go To Get Rove?

By: Pam On: May/16/06 - 4 Comments

Truth Out ran a piece on Saturday claiming that Karl Rove was to be indicted yesterday…it was a sure thing! Talk Left ran with the story!

From Truth Out on Saturday:

Karl Rove Indicted on Charges of Perjury, Lying to Investigators
By Jason Leopold
t r u t h o u t | Report

Saturday 13 May 2006

Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald spent more than half a day Friday at the offices of Patton Boggs, the law firm representing Karl Rove.

During the course of that meeting, Fitzgerald served attorneys for former Deputy White House Chief of Staff Karl Rove with an indictment charging the embattled White House official with perjury and lying to investigators related to his role in the CIA leak case, and instructed one of the attorneys to tell Rove that he has 24 business hours to get his affairs in order, high level sources with direct knowledge of the meeting said Saturday morning.

Talk Left gave updates as the story was falling apart. Note the source(giggle):

Update: Larry Johnson reports on Democratic Underground:

It is not just Jason Leopold. Joe Wilson heard the same from other sources. And, more importantly, Jason is reporting based on multiple, more than two, sources.

Now the story is falling apart here and here.

According to Mark Corallo:

Did Patrick Fitzgerald come to Patton Boggs for 15 hours Friday?
No.
Did he come to Patton Boggs for any period of time Friday?
No.
Did he meet anywhere else with Karl Rove’s representatives?
No.
Did he communicate in any way with Karl Rove’s representatives?
No.
Did he inform Rove or Rove’s representatives that Rove had been indicted?
No.

How does Talk Left react? Leopold claimed he had been set up as part of a White House “disinformation campaign.” That’s pathetic.

Seems to me that if Rove is still GWB’s top political adviser and Guru that with GWB shooting himself in the foot so regularly now they’d want to keep Rove right where he is.

Kinda like Howard Deaniac as chairklown of the DNC.

[...] The Washington Post has a scathing rebuke of this story written by TruthOut, which I wrote about here. Now before I get into the WaPo story, I should be clear that Truth Out did write …well I guess it was a retraction: The time has now come, however, to issue a partial apology to our readership for this story. While we paid very careful attention to the sourcing on this story, we erred in getting too far out in front of the news-cycle. In moving as quickly as we did, we caused more confusion than clarity. And that was a disservice to our readership and we regret it. [...]
