Lift School Cell Phone Ban?

By: Pam On: Jun/14/06 - 17 Comments

This is an article about New Yorkers asking for the ban, on cell phones in school, to be lifted. I guess I am not sure why kids need them in class? I just read an article about my high school lifting the ban (or at least getting close to), and the explanation given is that we live in a “real” world. Their fears of cheating didn’t pan out etc… I guess I am not sure why a kid needs a phone in class.

What are your feelings.

Cell phones should be TURNED OFF. It’s foolish to try to distract children in our education system to begin with. Growing up I never had a cell phone. There wasn’t a need. Emergencies are handled by the teacher through the administrative staff at the school. They are the ones who have contact information, etc.

As for students having them to begin with….I don’t have a problem with that. Many parents work and want to be in touch at the end of the day with their children. But that is AFTER school, not during and that’s the difference.

I agree with you Bon Bon…I think that parents are correct to have their kids carry the phones, just not in a classroom situation. I can not think of a benefit to having them in a classroom.

Have any of you guys heard about these new cell phone ringers that can only be heard by young people?

Something about the frequency makes adults unable to hear it…

    weird!

San Fran…..yeah, I’ve heard of them. Maybe the classroom should initiate an insulated “storage box” for the cells in each classroom. Drop off at the beginning of class, pickup at the end. That way it doesn’t matter whose cell phone rings; no one will heart it.

Mike. They have family phone plans where you can get up to 4 (I think) phones on one plan for something like $10 more. I’m not an advocate for kids having cell phones BUT also having been the single parent route I can tell you there is nothing like having one to keep track of your kid and to keep your child safe if they needed 911 for instance.

Just like anything else though it would be the parents responsibility to oversee and restrict the childs usage.

It’s just how it is nowadays, Mike. Nearly every single kid has a cell phone; it doesn’t make it right, but it’s a fact that schools and the teachers need to deal with.

San Fran- it’s a fact that schools and the teachers need to deal with.

Do you think kids should be allowed to have them in the classroom?

    Yes and No.

Yes students should be able to have them with them, but No, students should not use them IN class or be disruptive with them.

Students and young adults need to be taught how to be socially responsible, and treating them like 5 year olds with “bans” doesn’t help anyone learn how to properly behave.

Well, there is no accounting for idiot parents, shit, how many million people voted for John Kohn?

    If I had a 13,14,15,16,17 year old..they wouldn’t have a FUCKING cell phone.

What does everyone think about those cell phones that are specifically for young children? They don’t have a number pad, only 4 buttons that the parent pre-programs. For instance, the kid can only call the parents, 911, etc with one button.

that would be as far as I would go.

no fucking teenager needs a cell phone….period.

again, our ritalin, X-box, fucking soccer culture, rearing it’s ugly head.

I think these phones are a really good idea. It provides for the only reason I would approve of cell phones for kids, parental oversight of child’s activities and 911 emergency access.

I know it’s the ‘thing’ for teenagers to talk endlessly on the phone but without parental monitoring their days and nights would be wasted with endless chat. Kids need to be active in both physical and mental ways in order to become better Republicans  :mrgreen:
