Juneteenth, when the Republicans ended slavery
Today, Americans celebrate “Juneteenth” – when in 1865 slavery finally ended throughout the entire United States. Sadly, few people know that Juneteenth was a high water mark for African- Americans. Soon after that great day, the Democratic Party defeated the Reconstruction policies of the Republican Party, postponing the civil rights movement until the 1950s.An important fact which most history books ignore is that Abraham Lincoln’s 1864 running mate was a Democrat, Andrew Johnson of Tennessee. And so after Lincoln’s assassination, it was a Democrat who would be President of the United States for the first four years after the Civil War. That first President Johnson did all in his power to prevent African- Americans from experiencing Lincoln’s “new birth of freedom.”
It was in Texas where slavery finally ended. On June 19, 1865, U.S. troops commanded by General Gordon Granger landed at Galveston and brought some important news that the Democrats running the state had refused to tell their slaves, that they had been legally freed more than two years before by the Emancipation Proclamation. Granger’s famous General Order Number 3 read: “The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and free laborer.”
General Granger then traveled around Texas to inform the African-Americans, still being held as slaves by their Democrat masters, that they were in fact free. Granger was a zealous advocate for full civil rights for African-Americans. Too zealous, it turned out, for President Andrew Johnson. On August 6, 1865, just seven weeks after his arrival, President Johnson relieved Granger from command in Texas. That same month, Johnson removed all African-Americans serving in the U.S. Army occupation forces.
Any officer in the U.S. Army who exerted himself too much in defense of African-Americans was out of a job. For this reason, Johnson dismissed the conscientious Phil Sheridan, who had sent General Granger to Galveston, from command in Texas and Louisiana. Sheridan’s replacement was General Winfield Hancock, who then allowed white supremacist thugs a free hand. So impressed were former rebels with the performance of Hancock that he would receive the support of the Solid South when he became the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate in 1880.
President Andrew Johnson campaigned against ratification of the 14th Amendment and vetoed the Republicans’ Civil Rights Act of 1866. It was he who quashed Republican attempts to provide “forty acres and a mule” to emancipated African-Americans. Andrew Johnson vetoed a bill to extend voting rights to African-Americans in the District of Columbia, saying he wanted a completely “white man’s government.” And in Johnson’s racist mind, the civil rights hero Frederick Douglass was “a damned scoundrel.”
Southern Democrats (the former Confederate rebels and President Johnson) exercised almost complete control over the post-Civil War South for two years after Appomattox. The Democrat state governments set up by the Andrew Johnson administration quickly reduced African-Americans to near slavery with the infamous “black codes.” Not until March 1867, when they attained two-thirds majorities in Congress, were Republicans able to override Johnson’s vetoes and enact their Reconstruction policies, beginning with the Reconstruction Act of 1867.
Unfortunately, the two-year delay before the onset of Republican Reconstruction had enabled the Democrats to strengthen their grip on power and on African-Americans in the South. As soon as they were back in power in the southern states, Democrats closed down most of the public school system that Republican administrations had established for African-Americans as well as poor whites. Democrat terrorist organizations such as the Ku Klux Klan and the Knights of the White Camellia denied African-Americans their right to vote. In the South, where dozens of African-Americans had held elective office while Republicans were in power at the state level, the restoration of Democrat rule meant the exclusion of African-Americans from politics for nearly a century.

Juneteenth
Today marks a distinct anniversary that is hardly ever mentioned.
June 19, 2006 - 01:08 PM on June 19th, 2006
My great-grand-dad did that in 1865, james E. Dawes 30th mass inf. but you said nothing about the black police who ruled over poor white, and raped and killed people from 1865 to 1868, one of the reason the KKK Was made was to stop the black police from mass murder of poor whites, why not tell the facts about that evil war against the rights of all people, after 1868 black were murdered by whites for the same reason of madness, the fact is the government at that time was being run by rats as now, isn’t it fun to watch. i love the liers and its so much fun to see the great lie! kill bin laden be free. oh yes say something about the two troopers being hold by the muslim pigs!
don’t be sheeple see it for what it is!
June 19, 2006 - 01:19 PM on June 19th, 2006
And so it goes. For the life of me I can’t understand why the democrats get the support from blacks. Even just having gone through this history lesson I don’t understand it. And when I mentioned to a liberal recently the KKK was started by a democrat I was told that was a myth and I needed to check facts. Un fricken believable.
June 19, 2006 - 01:22 PM on June 19th, 2006
It’s the great lie of all time.. unfathomable. Telling a whole population of people that they are too stupid and helpless to get themselves together, and the people falling for it and voting for them.
it’s like a cosmic, fucking gag reel.
June 19, 2006 - 01:23 PM on June 19th, 2006
The demacrats were the biggist proprieters of slavery until this day in 1865 when a republican president ABRAHAM LONCOLN ended it by signing the AMANIPATION PROCULMATION into law:cool:
June 19, 2006 - 02:07 PM on June 19th, 2006
Comparing the two political parties of today with the the parties of more than 140 years ago is more than a bit silly…
SO MUCH has changed and happened since then, it’s unfair and inaccurate to expect them both to be more or less the same now than they were long, long, long ago.
If BonBon had “told” this liberal that a Democrat started the KKK I would answer with a big “so what?!? - it was 140 years ago!”
Apparently the legacy of Lincoln wasn’t enough to keep the Republicans as the favored party of the minority. Look at you guys today. Your team champions anti-minority policies like the fight against affirmative action and as of 2004 can only get 11% of blacks to vote for your presidential candidate. And you guys act surprised.
Geez. What the hell happened to your party?!?
June 19, 2006 - 02:11 PM on June 19th, 2006
exactly what “anti-minority” policies are you referring to?
specifics…..
June 19, 2006 - 02:12 PM on June 19th, 2006
Affirmative action does NOTHING to help african americans, when PROPERLY applied, it locks out minorities in favour of white women and Asians….
Just more proof that it’s FUCKED UP AND RACIST TO BEGIN WITH.
June 19, 2006 - 03:59 PM on June 19th, 2006
SF- you seem to be the only one on the board concerned about the minority vote..We believe in cutting the welfare system to the bone..obviously we aren’t going to get a strong minority turnout
June 19, 2006 - 04:01 PM on June 19th, 2006
Actually, the lineage is quite clear. The Democrite party has simply moved the minorities from the plantation to the virtual plantation. The Democrite party has zero integrity, which is most clearly exemplified by its willingness to sell out America and undermine the war against our enemies for political advantage.
If the minorities ever wake up in numbers and realize that the slavemasters are still there, the backlash against the Democrite party will be Biblical.
June 19, 2006 - 05:53 PM on June 19th, 2006
Yeah, it was only 42 years ago that the Democrats were standing in the doors of universities denying Blacks entrance. It was 42 years ago that Democrats tried to block the Voting Rights Act.
Democrats have yet to put a Black in as Secretary of State or THE NSA Advisor to the President.
June 19, 2006 - 10:41 PM on June 19th, 2006
“Democrats have yet to put a Black in as Secretary of State”
…and yet, Republicans still only got 11% of the black vote in the last presidential election.
you…just…don’t…get it.
June 19, 2006 - 10:45 PM on June 19th, 2006
“We believe in cutting the welfare system to the bone..obviously we aren’t going to get a strong minority turnout”
Keep in mind that more whites are on welfare than blacks.
A social safety net like Welfare is 100% necessary for those in need, it’s helpful to the disabled and elderly and in some cases life saving for those who would otherwise be unable to receive income needed to keep a roof over their head.
Of course you’d want to cut a program that helps millions of Americans. You’re Republicans.
June 19, 2006 - 11:02 PM on June 19th, 2006
Keep in mind that more whites are on welfare than blacks. Yes, and there are also more whites than blacks in this country.
it’s helpful to the disabled and elderly If this is what we were funding that would be fine by me..but that isn’t the case..Instead we have generations of families living on welfare..
June 19, 2006 - 11:39 PM on June 19th, 2006
Haven’t I been saying this on this board for months? The problem is San fran, there really isn’t much difference between the Democratic party then and now. The Democrats still fight to keep blacks and poor whites from getting better educations. They still tell blacks that they aren’t as good as whites. Why else do you think they are so adamant about affirmative action? What is the message that you send when you tell someone that the playing field has to be tipped in their favor because they aren’t able to compete on a level one? As for a Democrat founding the KKK being old news, is the fact that the former Democratic Senate minority leader (and still a current Senator) was a senior member in the KKK old news as well? Yes, I agree if all of the Democrat’s racist actions had been 140 yrs ago it would be old news, but I’m old enough to remember the civil rights movement in the 60s, and that wasn’t 140 yrs ago. I’ve also lived through the KKK burning crosses on hillsides opposite the homes of black families. It wasn’t Republicans turning police dogs and fire hoses on the marchers in Alabama. It wasn’t a Republican Judge and prosecutor who made a mockery of the trial of the men who murdered Emmett Till. Didn’t they just try and convict the murderer of Medgar Evers in the last 10 years? A murder that was over 25 years old because the Democrats didn’t want to pursue it at the time it happened. A murderer that because he killed a black man was allowed to live to a ripe old age before being brought to trial for his crime and is now out on bail to receive medical care and await his appeal? All of these things were done by your beloved Democrats.
As for the blacks voting predominantly Democratic, I have two theories behind that. The first is that you can fool some of the people all of the time and the second being since the Dems insist on forcing underprivileged inner city kids to attend substandard schools, they are much easier to fool.
June 19, 2006 - 11:57 PM on June 19th, 2006
It seems to me that some people here think black people are all idiots and are too dumb to “know better” than to vote Democrat.
Hmm…why would a black person vote Republican when most of the time, they’re hearing from Republicans that they’re dumb and can be bought with a pack of smokes?
June 20, 2006 - 12:19 AM on June 20th, 2006
seriously.
June 20, 2006 - 01:17 AM on June 20th, 2006
Is that what they are hearing? Go ask the average virtual plantation dweller, who loyally votes for Democrites and believes that George Bush doesn’t care about black people and probably did cause hurricane Katrina, ask them why they vote Democrite. I’ll bet what you will hear is a recitation of the compendium of lies the Democrites have sold them over the years.
That’s why. It isn’t the republicans telling them they are too stupid and incompetent to make it on their own without affirmative action and the big white (Democrite) benefactor.
June 20, 2006 - 02:30 AM on June 20th, 2006
hey guys be good the days of this nation if you can call it a nation are almost over, so have fun for now, soon the evil one hillary will be pounding in doors and shooting dogs, and i will be the first dog shot for mexico and bin laden, hillarys cry will be for freedom of her money people the third world monkeys.
so forget about a long dead war, and start to think of the next mass blood bath coming to you for the people of the third world and the rulers of evil the one world lovers of hell. don’t think about it feel it coming just like James E. Dawes did in 1861:twisted: be happy in the next world:wink:

15 and 16, that might be YOUR opinion of blacks, but not mine, nor any of the Republicans I know of, especially the black ones.
Alyssa and SF, me thinks your own prejudice is coming out.
June 20, 2006 - 07:15 AM on June 20th, 2006
15. Alyssa. You are either very young and naive or closed minded and foolish. The Republican party believes in offering opportunity, not handouts. Handouts should ONLY be given to the truly needy and perhaps as subsidies for former welfare recipients who start work in jobs that don’t pay what they need to live on.
I believe that most people would work if given the chance and the welfare state would diminish.
June 20, 2006 - 07:45 AM on June 20th, 2006
You don’t just hand them the fish. You give them a fishing pole, show them how to use it so they can catch their own fish….this is the Republican way. Why do you think New Orleans was a mess. A majority of those people had their fish handed to them everyday without lifting a finger. Then when they needed to help themselves, they had no idea how to.
It is like a young child, if one parent spoils the kid with everything without earning it and one parent makes a child work to earn what he wants, which parent is the child going to want to live with?? That is how the Democratic party gets the black vote. Look out, because when the people taking government entitlements outnumber the taxpayers, we are all in big trouble.
June 20, 2006 - 07:59 AM on June 20th, 2006
Our welfare system should be set up just as the unemployment insurance is…6 months and your account is dry…Obvioulsy we would need to grandfather in those that are on it, but it would deter future abusers.
June 20, 2006 - 09:47 AM on June 20th, 2006
I’m still waiting to hear ONE single anti-minority policy?
anyone?
June 20, 2006 - 10:37 AM on June 20th, 2006
School Choice? Oh yeah, actually giving minority children a chance to learn something….. I can see how you would consider that “Anti-Minority” since it might actually result in them growing up smart enough to see through the democratic plantation and think for themselves.
but we can’t have that, can we? Our little slaves thinking for themselves…how then could we get a saddam-like 90% of their vote?
June 20, 2006 - 11:19 AM on June 20th, 2006
17–Is that what they are hearing?
If they read this site, yes.
19–Please go back and re-read my post. How does commenting on what others are saying make me racist?
20–I’ll do you a favor and ignore your misplaced insults. I repeated what is a fact, that some people on here think black people can be bought with a pack of smokes. It’s been said many times on this site, never by me. If you don’t remember how many times that has been repeated on this site, you are the foolish one.
Did I say that everyone deserves handouts? I believe quite the opposite, in fact. I agree with Peejz, I think there should be a limit for how long one can accept welfare (as long as they don’t have a disability). I worked with adults that have developmental disabilities for many years, so I believe there are people that do need to receive benefits their entire life.
But hey, if you are able (mentally and physically) to get a job, then one needs to do just that and not take handouts.
June 20, 2006 - 11:24 AM on June 20th, 2006

26–I agree.
June 20, 2006 - 08:00 PM on June 20th, 2006
Alyssa, it’s not that people on here are saying that black votes can be bought for a pack of smokes. It’s a fact that Democratic get out the vote volunteers have been rounding up homeless, predominantly black, indigents and giving them cigarettes and booze in order to get them to vote for the Democrats. We aren’t out trying to buy votes with booze and cigarettes, the Democrats ARE out buying votes with booze and cigarettes.
June 20, 2006 - 08:57 PM on June 20th, 2006
28–Not saying you’re wrong, but can you provide a source for that?
June 20, 2006 - 08:58 PM on June 20th, 2006
28–And yes, people have said that on this forum.
June 20, 2006 - 09:17 PM on June 20th, 2006
Alyssa- the examples are here, here, here, and here
June 20, 2006 - 09:45 PM on June 20th, 2006
I think everyone can agree that what they did is shallow, disgusting, illegal, and disrespectful, but I still don’t think it taints all Democrats. Just like scandal involving Republicans don’t taint all of us…

September 6, 2008 - 07:27 AM on September 6th, 2008
Juneteenth is America’s 2nd Independence Day celebration. Americans of African descent were trapped in the tyranny of enslavement on the country’s first “4th of July”, 1776, Independence Day.
It took over 88 for the news of freedom to be announced in Southwest Texas, over two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Lincoln.
29 states recognize Juneteenth as a state holiday or state holiday observance, the District of Columbia, as well as the Congress of the United States.
Together we will see Juneteenth become a national holiday in America!
