Steele’s Donor List Stirs Racial Questions

Controversial headline isn’t it? Well that is what the WaPo must have wanted because the rest of the ariticle is basically a smear on Michael Steele. What does Willie Horton have to do with Michael Steele? Well he was at a fund raiser that was thrown by the producer of the Willie Horton ad.

It seemed a most unusual choice for Steele, the first African American elected to statewide office in Maryland and a Republican whose strategy for winning a Senate seat in a state dominated by Democrats has involved the aggressive courtship of black voters.

“Why would he go for money to those who have done us harm?” asked Elbridge James, a former leader of the NAACP’s Montgomery County branch.

Done us harm? Where was the NAACP when this was happening to Steele?
What is interesting about this story is that the author, Matthew Mosk, is the one that covered the Steele smear..for this article, he found room to place it on page B1, yet when the Sambo attacks were in full swing, he could only find space for the story on page B-4. From NewsBusters, I was able to get the link to the story he wrote. As noted by Ken Shepherd:

Matthew Mosk of the Washington Post today reports on a racist attack lodged by a liberal blogger on Maryland Lt. Governor Michael Steele (R), an African-American, who is the front-runner in the Republican primary for US Senate in 2006. Mosk also notes how this controversy has touched a Democrat seeking statewide office in Virginia.

A racially charged image of Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele on the Web site of a liberal blogger brought recriminations from both Democrats and Republicans yesterday.

The doctored photo of Steele (R) as a minstrel, and accompanying slurs, prompted Virginia gubernatorial candidate Timothy M. Kaine (D) to pull an ad from the site, stevegilliard.blogspot.com . Kaine’s campaign had purchased the space through a broker that put his advertising on numerous liberal-leaning blogs.

Mosk notes that Maryland state Democratic leaders have decried the blog post by Steve Gilliard as “extremely offensive and distasteful” but notes that Daily Kos editor Markos Moulitsas, among some other liberal bloggers, are more concerned with Democrats like Kaine pulling ads from the sidebar of Hilliard’s blog. Moulitsas’s objections close out the article, saying: “I don’t want bloggers to be afraid to say things because they don’t want to offend an advertisers.”

The way Mosk ended the article spoke volumes!

This is what I like about Steele. He doesn’t give a rat’s ass about the use or misuse of the race card. He is much too mature a person and too smart a candidate to give in to that mentality. THAT is what is winning him voters.

With grace he spoke while people threw oreo cookies at him, slandered him and constantly talk about his race. He stands up for his beliefs and doesn’t seem to see color. He did say he hopes to be a voice. He does and I for one will vote for him. So will many others.

As for Willie Horton, he was a first class murderer. He was given a life sentence which Dukaikas furloughed. That was wrong. Innocent lives were lost because of it.

Personally, I’m glad that ad was made because the whole country needed to know that Dukaikas made bad policies.

BonBon, I watched him on H&C last night, and Alan tried to bring up the Jesse Helms ad as well as Trent Lott, basically mimicing this article, but Michael Steele again threw Byrd up to him, to which Alan accused him of needing to go back in history..Alan looked so pathetic when he realized what he said.

As for Willie Horton..there was nothing racist about the ad. As you pointed out, Willie Horton was an example of a bad policy gone wrong. He was a violent offender that was sentenced to prison. He happened to be black. Because of a stupid policy, MA allowed a violent offender out on the streets and he committed more crimes.

I wish I had seen H&C last night. I love to hear Michael Steele speak. That’s the thing I like about Steele and that to me speaks volumes of his intelligence. He just doesn’t let things rile him. He sits firm in his opinions and beliefs.

Steele will not let anyone, black or white, be released from their just punishments. He himself came from a poor family whose mother worked hard and didn’t take handouts. You know he has a sister who is a pediatrician. It’s just a point proved that with hard work and some basic smarts ANYONE can make it in our society.

And for everyone who reads this post he is a Republican because he believes in limited government and OPPORTUNITY as opposed to handouts. It’s a big difference between the elephant and the ass… I mean donkey
