No big surprise that France would back out of the deal. Only question is why?
The French U.N. delegation has joined with Arab nations and is now calling for a complete and immediate Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon as a condition of any cease-fire, the sources said.
In addition, the French have reportedly agreed with Arab demands that the Lebanese force be accompanied only by UNIFIL, with no international force to be deployed.
I just have to wonder how much the Arabs are slipping the French under the table on this one. It’s just another example of exactly how much you can trust the French. The UN is showing exactly how impotent it is. Why would anyone think that the Israelis would agree to a return to the exact same status quo that allowed Hezbollah to stockpile over 10,000 rockets, build military type fortifications under civilian buildings, conduct criminal attacks on Israeli border posts, killing and kidnapping Israeli citizens? For that matter, I can think of 232 reasons why the US should insist on Hezbollah being disarmed and dispursed before any type of cessation of hostilities. 231 Marines killed by a Hezbollah truck bomb in Beirut and a Navy diver who was beaten to death and thrown from a TWA plane.
