“firebombing Dresden”

The majority of the people posting here couldn’t tell you anything about the Dresden attacks let alone what war/conflict it occurred in.

If you spun it the right way you could make the “attackers”or the “victims”out to be the hero’s or the martyrs.

Actually a soldier does have the responsibility to refuse to follow a patently ILLEGAL order, however morality has nothing to do with it. Legality of an order is clearly defined in the soldier’s code of conduct. Shooting unarmed women and children? Not a legal order. Shoot armed women and children or those who appear to be so? Legal order. Raze a house for the hell of it? Not a legal order. Raze a house that it is reasonable to believe is or has been used for a military purpose (observation or firing location) totally legal and even wise to do so. Raze a house that obstructs your view of a potential route of attack? Iffy but probably legal due to the potential military impact of failing to do so. While firebombing Dresden would’ve been considered morally questionable due to the high probability of collateral damage, it was perfectly legal due to the military goals that destroying the city would achieve.
