Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.

Ahmadinejad is coming to town

When Iran’s president addresses the U.N. General Assembly later this month, he will not be treated to a one-on-one debate with President Bush, as he has requested, but will be met by a crowd of thousands of protesters at Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza. The hastily arranged protests are part of a growing opposition to President Ahmadinejad’s visit…. [ NY Sun ]

Curious. I wonder..

Will members of NOW or Operation Pink be on hand to protest how iranian mullahs brutalize women?

Will there be a GayPride parade on hand to protest how iranian mullahs kill gay men?

Or will such groups distance themselves – not wanting to step on toes?

I realize that because the United States is the host for the UN, he has to be allowed to visit the UN, where, lets face it, he will be among friends and supporters.. however, doesn’t it seem a little..I don’t know – - conflicting to allow him to even touch the edge of our air space?

So, the guy threatens our President with the, now popular, Convert or die message – the same message that puts him in league with al-qaida and palestinian terrorists . . and he’s welcome into New York City, New York – USA, to address the UN.

Step One: Get the UN out of the US.
Step Two: Live up to the promise of bringing supporters of terrorism to justice.

End game.

What purpose does the U.N. serve anymore except to serve as a window-dressing to the notion of international cooperation and diplomacy? It is a hollow, corrupted shell of a noble idea that, like most other human endeavors, has fallen vicitm to the very worst of human nature.

I’d bet that far more useful and effective dialogue and diplomacy takes place in secret backchannels of communication between nations than in any U.N. process. That’s how the Cuban missile crisis was solved: backchannel communication directly between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. All the U.N. proceedings ever did was generate fodder for newspapers.

Perhaps it is time to move it elsewhere, as the NY venue just provides cover for spies and shifts a disproportionate share of the cost onto the U.S. And drastically cut the U.S. contribution to the U.N. budget. Cut out the high salaries for do-nothings, the big perks and bennies, and maybe most of the crooks and leeches will move on to greener pastures. Maybe they can somehow get some honest folks in there.

Or maybe just pull out entirely and kick it out of NY.
