SPIEGEL: “You are trying to say that critics of Islam are systematically silenced in Germany?”

By: Pam On: Oct/2/06 - 7 Comments

Syrian-born German Islamic expert Bassam Tibi:

SPIEGEL: You are trying to say that critics of Islam are systematically silenced in Germany?

Tibi: Yes. Even the comparatively moderate Turkish organization DITIB says there are no Islamists, only Islam and Muslims ” anything else is racism. That means that you can no longer criticize the religion. Accusing somebody of racism is a very effective weapon in Germany. Islamists know this: As soon as you accuse someone of demonizing Islam, then the European side backs down. I have also been accused of such nonsense, even though my family can trace its roots right back to Muhammad and I myself know the Koran by heart.

According to this article http://www.spiegel.de/politik/deutschland/0,1518,439308,00.html Mr. Tibi sees rather an integration problem in Germany than with islamists…

    Quote:
“”Ich bin Luft in Deutschland. Ich kämpfe seit 20 Jahren um meine Integration” ~ “I feel treated like air in Germany. I’ve been fighting the last twenty years for my integration”

Hey man, what do you expect?! Doing a roundup with all immigrants and whacking them to learn German, eat Sauerkraut and where leather trousers? Who the hell defines what is “German”?! From my POV we live in a multicultural society and it is up to me as a citizen (being born here as well as my wife with a turkish passport) to say how tolerant I am towards immigrants!
I don’t need a ex-foreign Professor (with German citizenship) whose patriotism goes only as far as it gives him the opportunity to promote himself, but not as much to stay and keep on fighting! Farewell in America Mr.Tibi, my Country does not set a high value on hypocrites like you…

    Peejz,
I set a high value on people treating eachother with dignity and with respect towards their individuality.
I mean, with that many (legal and “illegal”) citizens in you country not being able to speak english, I wonder if Mr.Tibi will find more integration in your country than in mine…

Matthias, you set a high value on those you feel should be respected. You haven’t addressed the issue of the thread though. I will take your silence to mean Tibi is correct.

I didn’t address the issue itself, because I found the actual cause of the latest “potential muslim protests” discussion ridiculous.

All the German politician were set up by the fact that this opera was cancelled due to the suspicion that it might insult the Islam or muslims and the public opinion shared this view, blablabla… What wasn’t clearly told to the public was the actual content of the opera show (as it was created by the director),was that a) the founders of the world religions were beheaded (!) and b) this wasn’t part of the original script of the opera, but nothing but an idea of the director to get more attention to his play!

What really bothers me with this story is that the German christian public ISN’T upset and doesn’t protest by somebody who founds it entertaining to behead Jesus! That’s the shame! I respect religion and I respect people who respect religion… I don’t respect it to be called “freedom” if somebody hurts somebody’s feelings of religious beliefs. A believer is a believer and an extremist is an extremist!

5-I respect people who respect religion

I completely understand the denial of global warming by conservatives.
How could the jerks in the bible belt (who still believe that we are all descendants of Adam and Eve) ever think that floodings, droughts, storms and lightnings and anything else that neither muslims, democrats and CNN can be blamed for are nothing else but a godgiven punishment to a godless world…

Thanks to the Lord (which we all know is a personal pal of GW) the republicans have an omnipotent understanding! The problem is… the muslim people in the gulf region (and elsewhere) are not as “smart” as the republicans and so they (in fact) have a simplistic understanding of the world and that’s the reason why Laney’s evaluation is absolutely RIGHT!
