Support Dunkin Donuts and Applebees

Boy have these 2 companies done it this time! Michelle points out that they are both receiving the wrath of Open-borders extremists. What caused their anger?

A local group fighting for immigrant rights is calling for a boycott of two nationally known companies. Dunkin Donuts and Applebee’s are accused of discriminating against immigrant workers whose names don’t match their social security numbers.
On the 10th anniversary of what immigration reform advocates call stringent changes to immigration laws, supports of the legalization of the undocumented are once again speaking out — only this time, they are hoping not only to mobilize their vote, but also use their buying power to force the kind of change they want.

“The social security administration says it plans to send out 8 million no match letters,” said Martino Unzuerta, Chicago Workers Collaborative.

The initial purpose of the social security administration’s ‘no match’ letter was to credit workers unclaimed social security earnings. The agency routinely sends out ‘no match’ letters to a company when employees’ names and social security numbers don’t match possibly because of a spelling error, omission of information or a unreported name change. But immigration activists say some employers are now aggressively using the letters to fire immigrant workers.

“The Bush administration wants to give the appearance that they are cracking down on undocumented immigration and workers are an easy escape goat,” said James Thindwa, Chicago Jobs with Justice.

Groups accuse several companies of the practice using ‘no match’ letters to immigrant workers who don’t have valid social security numbers. They want the public to boycott businesses, including Applebee’s and Dunkin Donuts. Neither company could be reached for comment.

Well, I love DD and their coffee (buy the whole beans to brew at home), but Applebees? blah. Mediocre food with nonconsitant service.

I don’t know why everyone gets in a hissy when you need to provide identifying documentation to work. When I hire someone, I need get (from USA citizens) a government issued ID or passport plus a SS card or orignal/certified birth certificate to statisfy the I-9. That’s been the *law* for a long long time.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Go after the employers who refuse to abide by the existing laws and the illegals problem will cure itself.

Oh yeah, and also do away with that “automatic” citizenship crap for babies born on US soil to non-legal resident parents. What a dumb law.

4- with the documentation requirement? Yes, but not for hiring non-citizens. Natural born USA citizens seem to have a problem keeping a SS card or certified birth certificate on hand. They try and say “my SS# is there on my drivers license”. I have to tell them no, not good enough. Probably 30% of the time applicants don’t have the required documents. I have to to tell them to go get a certified copy of their birth certificate (which is normally quicker to obtain than waiting for the SS administration to send them a replacement card). We let them work while they obtain the documentation, but we can’t cut them a check until we have it.

btw, I re-read my lengthy sentance above. If you have a US passport, that is all the documentation you need to work in the US.

In MI, employers require a valid SS card and photo id..background checks are standard. A friend of mine has a family owned manufacturing plant, small op of about 75 employees..she got a call from the insurance company due to the fact that 3 different people were using 1 SS number! They never had any in-house tools to cross reference the info..I still can’t figure out how the payroll company didn’t pick up on it..but she had to let 3 people go..

I had a customer I deliver to tell me how she had received a notice from the IRS saying that she had under reported he income significantly and owed over $10,000 in taxes. When she brought it up to her (now) previous employer, she was told that since 3 employees didn’t have SSNs, the employer had put them all on hers. The employer paid the back taxes, so she didn’t raise a stink over it, but she was really at risk of a variety of problems including identity theft. She quit not long after the taxes were paid. Of course if the Senate has their way, those illegals will be able to collect Social Security benefits based on HER earnings as well as theirs. She could end up getting nothing because they could end up collecting the benefits before she does. Got to love John McCain huh?

7- You’ve made the case that it is the EMPLOYERS who need to be the frontline responsible entities, not the illegals who try to worm into the system. Go after (harshly- I mean with PRISON, not pittyass fines) the EMPLOYERS who dont follow the laws and the illegals will dry up. (well, that, and removing the born-on-usa soil auto citizenship thing)

We also need to take a hint from what the illegals themselves are saying. After being incarcerated for 4 months by Sheriff Joe Arpaio on charges of conspiracy to commit human smuggling, most of the illegals have said that had they known that they were going to be jailed for months before being deported, they wouldn’t have come across the border. They were expecting to be deported immediately after discovery and then sneak back across the following day. Keeping them in custody for 4 months caused their families extreme financial hardship because at least had they stayed in Mexico thay would’ve been able to at least earn some money. When the illegals say that being held in custody deters them from sneaking across the border, take their word for it and keep them in custody for an ever increasing number of months based on how many times they’ve been caught. When they realize that the 3rd time they’re caught illegally in the country they’re going to be back in jail for a year, they aren’t going to risk leaving their family penniless for a year.

BTW have you seen that V. Fox is whining about the US wanting to build a fence? Of course considering that the fence has been authorized but not funded, or exempted from the environmental impact or endangered species laws, the odds of it actually being built under the current legislation is pretty damn slim.

9- Gotta disagree. Why waste tax dollars feeding them in cells when the real solution is to cut off the incentive (nail the US employers who enable these illegals)? No work and no citizenship for thier babies suddenly makes the USA rather unattractive.

Yeah, I’ve seen the whining about the fence. Crack down on the employment by these USA crooks and there won’t be a problem.

10- Until the flow is ebbed, we need to use FAO’s system…but TT, I am saying, right along with you, that employers should go to jail…but the reality is: overcrowding, we know the wussies will write the law to be a 30 day penalty, employers will get work release, with the already over-crowding, the people will want a spot for pedophiles over employers…

I say do it like the drunk driving laws

Offence 1 = $250,000 per illegal automatic fine
Offence 2= $250,000 per illegal and loss of business license for 90 days
Offence 3= Jail time and loss of business license lifetime
