You know, this survey makes as strong a case as any for a change of strategy in the 'War on Terror.' The domestic wiretaps in violation of FISA, all the work to severely limit or suspend rights of people (including citizens) suspected of terrorist activities, Guantanamo Bay, the amorphous denials of torture that always seem to be associated with a wink and a 'trust us' ephithet, the abuse scandals, references to 'crusades'...all of that adds up to the further isolation and division of American Muslims from the rest of America, making them less likely to trust our government and work with law enforcement. We are fostering extremism, not only outside of our country, but inside it as well. I am heartened that the vast majority of people in this survey still believe violence against American citizens is wrong, and that it is possible to be both a good Muslim and a good American citizen. However, I think that if we continue down the current path, asking the same questions in a few years will yield very different, and more disturbing answers.
