Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.

Milton Friedman, RIP

Earlier this year, the Mercatus Center scholar Russell Roberts interviewed Milton Friedman. The topic? Two of Mr. Friedman’s most influential books, “Capitalism and Freedom” and “A Monetary History of the United States, 1867-1960.” Both were first published decades ago and were either dismissed or ignored at the time, but turned out to be revolutionary.

In 1976 Mr. Friedman was awarded the Nobel Prize in economics and his ideas went on to serve as an intellectual framework supporting the economic policies that have led to unprecedented prosperity in the United States over past two-and-a-half decades. Today it was announced that Mr. Friedman has died, he was 94. His ideas will certainly continue to live on.
