Fear and a lull in immigration.
People assimilate over two generations usually. My own Irish American friend supports your ideas with regard to immigration though her own ancestors well into the 20th century suffered intolerance for two obvious reasons.
1) Roman Catholicism
2) Fear of a change in customs to the “American Way” by those already here.

The Irish were but one group that have been discriminated against because of their religion. My Irish ancestors were looked down upon because of more than their Catholocism. And assimilation to this country is not a bad thing. Please tell me the benefit of having kids in a classroom that can not speak the language. Many illegals have the idea that it isn’t necessary to speak English at home because the kids will learn it at school..thatis taxing the teachers and the educational process.

I’m 100% with you regarding the language thing. Do not assume otherwise.
And yes I know all about how the Irish were looked down on since it was partially those from whom I descend who did the “looking down”. So I have firsthand accounts to go on. Perhaps that’s why I’m hyper-cognizant of the necessity of not being exclusionary and (again) erring on the side of being perhaps overly-fair.
