Is The Purpose Of The Press To Work Against Government?
According to Glenn Greenwald, yes. I happen to be of the thinking that the purpose of the press is to report the unvanished and unbiased truth. In other words, the good, the bad and the ugly. Curt sums this up nicely:
Anytime a reporter decides that he/she will add some of their own bias to a story it becomes an editorial. Editorials are fine, print as many as you damn like, but at least label it as such. Instead we get editorials labeled as news. No where in journalism school should they teach that their job is to be adversarial, rather they should be teaching them how to find and report the facts, minus the bias.
Instead, we are forced to watch people like David Gregory make an ass of themselves.
MR. SNOW: Absolutely. And I think you need to read the report –
Q I have.
MR. SNOW: You’ve read the whole report?
Q No, I’ve gone through a lot of the recommendations.
The media of today seems to think they can get by with Cliffs Notes, and we all know that they may be the fastest way to learn a little but not the best way to learn and retain all the information needed.

Michelle malkin has: Blabbermouth case update: NYT off the hook? She linked to NYSun’s Josh Gerstein, who basically said that Patrick Fitzgerald would not be prosecuting the Times!

“Is The Purpose Of The Press To Work Against Government?”
Yes.
…and many other things, too.

Actually San Fran, as is all too frequently, you are wrong. The purpose of a news organization is to disseminate information, not propagandize against or cover up for the government when it suits them. I have seen reporters in this country (Gannett newspaper) flat out LIE for the purposes of making a story appear to be the exact opposite of the truth.
Why do you think that the “Arizona Republic” ran a story and a series of editorials about “Flying while Muslim” about the 6 Imams being thrown off the flight that included verified lies, but refused/failed to run ANY stories relating how the IMAMS had acted in ways that caused even other Islamic passengers to applaud when they were removed from the plane and had lied in their stories to the paper? Actions that airline security experts state follow the pattern of a security probe of aircraft security measures. There were plenty of local people on that plane, but the “Republic” only interviewed the Imams and reprinted their side of the story as fact without corroboration. A large portion of which has been proven to be inaccurate at best, and flat out lies at worst. The “Arizona Republic” is a wholly owned Gannett paper, US Airways is BASED IN TEMPE, AZ, the flight was bound for Phoenix, and 5 of the 6 Imams are residents of Arizona. Don’t you think that a bit more in depth reporting might have been in order?

The one thing that the press (in general) does not seem to attack is Liberalism. Instead, they promote the agenda of Liberalism.
