In the history of this country, there have been two separate and distinct means of executing someone by hanging. One is called “Death by hanging”. The other execution order is “To hang by the neck until dead.” The difference sounds subtle, but the actual difference between the two is extreme. In “Death by hanging”, the knot is placed at the side of the neck and the rope given an adequate amount of slack so that the neck snaps from the force of the fall. This can be a tricky procedure because there are specific formulas to follow to insure that the drop distance is adequate to break the offender’s neck, without snapping his head completely off. The State of Delaware had a particularly brutal serial killer be executed to “Death by Hanging” in the late 80s. When lethal injection came on the scene, they asked him if he would prefer that. He replied that even asking the question was cruel and that they should either hang him or let him go. As the state hadn’t actually executed anyone in over 20 years, they no longer had a gallows or the knowledge on how to build or use one. A lengthy search revealed that, like virtually everything else, the US Army had a technical manual on how to conduct a proper hanging. Following the information in the manual, the state had a gallows built and hung the s.o.b. He will never again kidnap, rape, torture and then murder another living soul.

The other method would be to “Hang by the neck until dead”. For those who are familiar with the movie “The Molly Maguires”, this was the method used for executing the actual people who were portrayed in the movie. In “Hang by the neck until dead”, the knot in the noose is placed at the back of the neck, and the drop is substantially less, thereby constricting or crushing the larynx and trachea, but not breaking the neck. Death is by slow strangulation and records show that people have remained alive for as much as 19 minutes after being hung.

Needless to say, hanging by the neck until dead is probably the option that the Iraqi courts will opt for.
