Typical…The Democrats oppose a plan to increase the amount of troops, yet Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates ” plus Jordan and Egypt all support the plan!
From a Liberal’s perspective:
The non-binding resolution, which was also gaining interest from a second key Republican, would symbolically put the Senate on record as saying the U.S. commitment in Iraq “can only be sustained” with popular support among the American public and in Congress.
From the Middle Eastern perspective:
“Nine foreign ministers are meeting in Kuwait today precisely to prevent Iraq from sliding into a civil war,” Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Mohammad al-Sabah said.
The joint statement “welcomed the commitment by the United States : to defend the security of the Gulf, the territorial integrity of Iraq and to ensure an : inclusive political process that engages all Iraqi communities.”
Earlier in Saudi Arabia, Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal gave a more qualified endorsement of the Bush strategy. Saud said that although his government hopes Bush’s “objectives will be implemented, the : means are not in our hands. They’re in the hands of the Iraqis.”
The joint statement also warned countries against interfering in Iraq. The Bush administration has accused Syria and Iran of fostering violence in Iraq and contributing to instability. The statement expressed a “collective desire to prevent Iraq from becoming a battleground for regional and international powers.”
