ALERT: Pelosi Won’t Block Iraq Funding to Stop Troop Surge
Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said she won’t block funding for additional troops.
Pelosi: Democrats will never cut off funding for our troops when they are in harm’s way.
It is, I think, very difficult for the president to sustain a war of this magnitude without the support of the American people and without the support of the Congress of the United States. That’s why Congress will vote to oppose the president’s escalation, from the standpoint of policy. We will have our disagreement.
Allah says:
There’s no political downside. If the surge fails, the left can say they showed faith in the troops by funding their mission and giving them a last chance to win. If it succeeds, they get credit for having underwritten victory. Everybody’s happy, just so long as you don’t think too hard about them willingly funding a war which they hate, which they deeply believe is harming America and getting U.S. soldiers killed needlessly, for the sake of their own political expedience.

My respect for Pelosi just went up a very minuscule notch. I still think she’s bad for the country, but if she holds to this promise not to defund the effort she’s a far better man then Teddy Kennedy ever was.

Maybe, just maybe, President Bush can still pull a rabbit out of his hat in Iraq. He has 1 3/4 years.
I don’t think 20,000 troops will accomplish anything; but a change in the way are forces are used might. It’s too soon to pull the rug out from under President Bush despite his huge miscalculations up to this point.

OI agree, although military expert say that the troop stregnth to civilian level would be corerct in Baghdad, I still endorse the powell Doctrine” go in with overwelming forces, secure the place and leave.
I would like to see triple the troop stregnth minimally, use to secure Bagdad, then heavy borde patrol and last secure Anbar Province.

Oh, if only the Powell doctrine had been followed. Secretary Rumsfeld and President Bush’s devotion to Secretary Rumsfeld for far too long have virtually guaranteed failure.:..
It’s far too late for the Powell doctrine.
20,000 troops won’t make a difference, but a smarter strategy might. This isn’t Japan in 1945. We can’t kill our way to victory. We must understand the enemy and deal with them in a rational way that can result in victory.
How many times have I been called a moron for suggesting that we need to understand the enemy??? If President Bush had understood the People of Iraq and the Muslims we might have avoided many of the current problems there.

“It’s far too late for the Powell doctrine.”
I disagree.
“20,000 troops won’t make a difference,”
I agree.
“President Bush had understood the People of Iraq and the Muslims we might have avoided many of the current problems there.”
I disagree. The problem was there long before we entered iraq. For some reason, people think that the US entering Iraq under Bush destabilized Iraq. The fract of the matter is that Iraq has been destabilzed for a great many year,. At tyhe very least since desert storm, more realistically since Hussein came to power, and the argument can be made for the last several hundred years.

Read this recently:
A panel of retired generals told a United States Senate committee today that sending 21,500 additional troops to Iraq will do little to solve the underlying political problems in the country.
“Too little and too late,”is the way Gen. Joseph P. Hoar, a former chief of the Central Command, described the effort to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. The additional troops are intended to help pacify Baghdad and a restive province, but General Hoar said American leaders had failed to understand the political forces at work in the country. “The solution is political, not military,”he said.
“A fool’s errand,”was the judgment of Gen. Barry McGaffrey, who commanded troops in the first Gulf War. He said other countries had concluded that the effort in Iraq was not succeeding, noting that “our allies are leaving us and will be gone by summer.â€
