John Edwards Can’t Stand Up To Hard Left Blogs, What Makes Us Think He Can Stand Up To The Terrorists?

UPDATE: This Isn’t Over by Chris Bowers at MyDD……He is right, it isn’t over, it’s only just begun!I made one passing reference to the John Edwards’ choice of bloggers for his campaign, but that was it.  I must admit that until the story starting unfolding, I had never even heard of Amanda Marcotte’s and Melissa McEwan’s blogs.  In a nutshell, these gals are not the type you would bring home to Mom, let alone hire for a presidential campaign.  After an uproar from the right, it looked like Edwards was going to dismiss them, that is, until Chris Bowers of MyDD threatened him.  Now we see this at Edwards’ blog:

The tone and the sentiment of some of Amanda Marcotte’s and Melissa McEwan’s posts personally offended me. It’s not how I talk to people, and it’s not how I expect the people who work for me to talk to people. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but that kind of intolerant language will not be permitted from anyone on my campaign, whether it’s intended as satire, humor, or anything else. But I also believe in giving everyone a fair shake. I’ve talked to Amanda and Melissa; they have both assured me that it was never their intention to malign anyone’s faith, and I take them at their word.

From Allahpundit:

It wasn’t their intention to malign anyone’s faith? By referring to religious conservatives as “godbags” and “Christofascists”? Quote:

Q: What if Mary had taken Plan B after the Lord filled her with his hot, white, sticky Holy Spirit?

A: You’d have to justify your misogyny with another ancient mythology.

Either he’s a gullible moron or he takes us for gullible morons. Bad news either way. Here’s the big finish:

We’re beginning a great debate about the future of our country, and we can’t let it be hijacked. It will take discipline, focus, and courage to build the America we believe in.

Bryan:

The guy can’t face down a howling mob led by Vanuatu protege Chris Bowers, yet he wants us to think he’s strong enough to face down the mad mullahs and Kim Jong-Il. Riiiight. File this netroots victory under the heading “pyrrhic.”

Meanwhile, the nutroots are waving their guns around in triumph.

Michelle Malkin:

John Edwards ought to pray (softly, because you don’t want your staffers muttering about you being a “godbag” behind your back, right?) that he doesn’t get hit.

Hear me now, believe me later, Johnny E.: If you lay down with nutroots, it will be hard to get back up.

Dawn Eden reacts to Amanda Marcotte’s “sorry-if-I-offended-anyone” non-apology:

I guess it’s nice to know that all those times her blog referred to Our Lord and Saviour as “Jeebus” ” in 114 blog entries to date (the most recent last Sunday) ” she was only kidding.A search of Pandagon archives shows that Amanda has yet to devise a similarly ha-ha name for Mohammed. Well, give her time; she’s been on the Edwards campaign for only a week and a half.

Jeff Goldstein:

Lots of gloating already in the comments by the flying monkeys the left typically dispatches to sprinkle schadenfreude over the poppies. But that’s to be expected, I guess. That their commentary is rife with further attacks on the faithful and suggestions that those who find Marcotte reprehensible have been saddled with tiny penises”well, this, too, is about as surprising as a Marcotte post that doesn’t somehow wend its way back to the institutionalized torturing of her pudendum by misanthropic godbags. But lost on these Marcotte supporters”who are cheering on the power of the “netroots” to cow a politician into keeping on an ugly and hateful liability”is that Edwards just showed up Marcotte and McEwan as frauds and posturing blowhards, writers who have been pulling the wool over their audiences’ eyes by posting vicious “arguments” they never truly believed. To use the loaded language of establishment feminism”he publicly castrated them”and in so doing, he made fools out of their audiences, to boot.

Further, in doing so, he has shown himself to be nothing more than a calculating political opportunist of the worst sort”one who believes the voting public so daft they might actually buy a statement like the one he just released.

Reader A.A. e-mails:

Matt Hamlin at the Hufpo goes on and on about rightwing smears against Edward’s blog team. How the heck is it a smear just to print what these two have written. Just shining the light on their own words. That’s what you did and what most other blogs I read were doing. That’s a funny way to smear somebody isn’t it? I can’t think of much more inspiring than a personal injury lawyer who is unable to face down his tinfoil hatted followers when they threaten him, as the first line of defense between our country and the bad guys in the world.

AP’s spinning is here. Edwards, the article reports, has never met his bloggers.

Catholic group Fidelis responds:

WASHINGTON D.C. – Former Senator John Edwards released an official statement Thursday announcing that he would not dismiss his blogmaster, Amanda Marcotte, despite pressure from Fidelis and other groups who revealed that Marcotte has a history of posting comments on her personal blog laden with profanity and anti-Catholicism.Fidelis President Joseph Cella commented: “We are shocked and appalled that John Edwards would stand by a campaign staff member who has viciously attacked Catholics and all Christians publicly on her personal blog. If any staffer had written similarly about gays, blacks, or Jews, there is no question Edwards would fire them immediately. Sadly, it appears that former Senator Edwards applies a different standard to attacks on Catholics.”

The Edwards campaign has issued apologies on behalf of the two staffers in question. The statements argued that the anti-Catholic posts were made on personal blogs unaffiliated with the campaign. Edwards was quoted as saying he believes in giving everyone a “fair shake.”

Earlier this week Fidelis learned the Edwards campaign had hired Marcotte, whose personal blog Pandagon has included reprehensible references to the Holy Spirit impregnating the Virgin Mary, Pope Benedict described as a “dictator,” and attacks on Christians as ‘Christofacists’.

“Lately we have been hearing a lot about the push to outlaw ‘hate speech,’ particularly speech critical of homosexuality, and yet John Edwards has refused to seriously address offensive and hate-filled speech in his own campaign. Any person associated with comments such as this does belong anywhere near a serious presidential candidate,” continued Cella.

Fidelis is a Catholic-based organization working with people of faith across the country to defend and promote the sanctity of life, traditional marriage, and the right to religious liberty by electing pro-life, pro-family and pro-religious liberty candidates, supporting the confirmation of judges, and promoting and defending laws faithful to the Constitution of the United States.

says Edwards will regret his decision.

The Anchoress is far more charitable. More from: Rick Moran, Sister Toldjah.

Paul Mirengoff:

If the campaign keeps Marcotte and the other lefty blogger, it will be a clear sign of weakness — powerful evidence that Edwards needs the unhinged element of his party so desperately in his quest to overcome Hillary Clinton that he can’t dump a pair of infantile bloggers who, at a minimum, will constitute a liability in the unlikely event the party nominates him.The bloggers themselves also seem pretty desperate. Apparently, they need this gig so badly that they don’t mind being told to “shut up and sing.”
