Report: Israel to Supply Armored Vehicles to U.S. Marines in Iraq

The London daily Al-Sharq Al-Awsat reports that Israel will supply the U.S. Marines in Iraq with specially equipped armored “Golan” vehicles which are specifically suited for urban warfare and can sustain attacks by RPGs and road mines.

Looks great. Now if the corrupt politicians and bureaucrats in the Pentagon will actually allow the Israelis to equip it with the anti RPG system that the Israelis use instead of insisting that the soldiers and Marines wait until the US designed system, which is years from production, is ready it will be even better. The Pentagon has refused to field an Israeli designed anti RPG system for years because they want to field a system from a US manufacturer. As a result of that idiocy/corruption, US service members have lost their lives from RPG attacks. Of course the same thing goes for the new contract for Beretta M9 pistols. The soldiers have repeatedly stated that the 9mm round is ineffective in the military required full metal jacketed configuration while the old 45 ACP round has proven time and again to work well. Even though the Beretta FAILED the original trials in the early 80s with a potentially FATAL FLAW, it was awarded a waiver and hence the contract over Smith and Wesson who failed due to a minor, easily repairable, problem that the powers that be refused to issue a waiver for. The Marines have dug out and refurbished their old 45s that date to WWII for issue to recon troops. They have also contracted with Kimber for a limited supply of 45s. A notice was sent out for trials for a new handgun in 45 ACP caliber and the powers that be pulled the Army out of the trials and placed a huge order for more of the ineffective, less than reliable 9mm Berettas. That action resulted in the trials being put on hold indefinitely. My personal opinion is that the Congressmen from Maryland (where the Beretta plant is located) brought substantial pressure to bear on the Pentagon to force them to continue providing our soldiers with substandard weaponry. A less glamorous possibility is that someone bribed someone to keep the contract. Unfortunately the problem is a combination of the two. The Beretta may be a fine weapon for police work, but it really isn’t strong enough for use as a combat weapon.

I’d still hate to be a gunner up on top of that thing when a bomb goes off…
isn’t there anything better, with more protection?
