Today’s Opinion And Open Trackbacks

Robert D. Novak: The Conservative Void

New York-based political consultant Kieran Mahoney’s statewide survey of probable Republican participants in the 2008 Iowa presidential caucuses shows this support for the “big three” GOP candidates: John McCain, 20.5 percent; Rudy Giuliani, 16.3 percent; Mitt Romney, 3.5 percent. Astonishingly, they all trail James Gilmore, the former governor of Virginia, with 31 percent.

Larry Elder: Democrat Versus Republican — What’s the Diff?

Dear Larry, I am a vote everyone wants, because I am on the fence. I would not ever declare myself as Democrat, Republican, conservative or liberal. I am an American looking for leadership.
Cal Thomas: Lies and Damn Lies

In the words of Hollywood mogul David Geffen, “Everybody in politics lies” But when some politicians tell lies that damage a person’s character in the eyes of voters and ultimately lead to his defeat, those are damnable lies that need to be corrected.

Thomas Sowell: High Court and Low Politics: Part III

While there is a tendency to label judges “liberal” or “conservative” — and the labels may fit, even if somewhat loosely — the real puzzle are judges who start out one way and move the other way over time.

Donald Lambro: An ugly turn on the road to the White House

Things are not turning out the way Democrats had hoped last November when they took control of Congress, promising to change the way things are done in Washington.

Suzanne Fields: Back to Bare Knuckles

The early rounds of presidential boxing matches for the Democratic nomination are more for entertainment than politics.

Paul Weyrich: Airlines Asking For Return of Federal Regulation?

The Jet Blue CEO, in addition to accepting responsibility and issuing five days of apologies, has now come out with a bill of rights. Passengers if delayed so many hours are entitled to compensation.

William Rusher: The Democrats take over the war

It is said that if enough monkeys were set to work poking randomly at enough typewriter keys, one of them, on the sheer law of averages, would sooner or later write “Hamlet.”

Emmett Tyrrell: Keep the Feith

What was it that their former friend, David Geffen, recently said of them? Did he say they lied with “such ease” it was “troubling”?

Michael Fumento: The Demos? Dangerous Special Operations Plan

It was one bullet point, just two sentences in the Democrats’ 31-page “New Direction for America” document released last June: In order to “Defeat terrorists and stop the spread of weapons of mass destruction, we will . . . . Double the size of our Special Forces”

Cliff May: Hollywood Shuffle

How curious that at the Academy Awards ceremony last weekend not a word was said about the terrorist movements dedicated to the destruction of the West.

Steve Chapman: The Only Place for the Government in TV Is Out

The government cannot tell you what to say, and it cannot tell you what not to say. That is your own business, and if you conduct it in a way the government dislikes, the government can go climb a skinny pole. Unless by “government” you mean the Federal Communications Commission

Marvin Olasky: The Butcher’s Bill in Iraq

In a hundred years historians may know whether our soldiers died in vain, but in a hundred days we’ll have a sense of whether we’re going in the right direction. Be wary of politicians and pundits who speak with certainty now.

Matt Towery: Bad Legislation: A Real Nightmare

Being the cocky legislator I was, I fooled myself into believing that some vague language in the bill would prevent such a miscarriage of justice.

Ann Coulter: Let Them Eat Tofu!

Even right-wingers who know that “global warming” is a crock do not seem to grasp what the tree-huggers are demanding. Liberals want mass starvation and human devastation.

Michael Johnson: Taking God Out Of School Leaves A Vacuum Something Will Replace

Suppose your child?s school announces a Christmas celebration ? and your child, while subscribing to your atheistic beliefs, decides to participate. So he goes, dressed as Santa Claus.

Janice Shaw Crouse: U.N. Considers Adding Billion-Dollar Women?s Agency

As if we didn?t have enough trouble already at the United Nations (U.N.) from feminists pushing a radical agenda on the world, they are now trying to “reform” the whole “gender architecture” of the U.N.

Maggie Gallagher: Science Says… Bury Jesus

Oh goody, another lovely round of that increasingly popular parlor game, “Science Says.” And just in time for Lent!

William F. Buckley: A New Bill Of Rights?

Newspapers are carrying lead stories on the inchoate schism between the Episcopalians and the rest of the Anglican Communion.

Michael McBride: Quitting Public School

I am through. After this semester, I am pulling my daughter from public school. I won?t be enrolling her in private school either.

Dick Morris and Eileen McGann: McCain’s Campaign Collapses

The John McCain candidacy, launched amid much hope, fanfare, and high expectations, may be dying before our eyes. Even worse, it may go out with a whimper instead of a bang.

  3. The problem with the Clintonoids is that they call the truth lies against the Clintons. The same with ther traitors Kerry and Kennedy.

  5. Hillary is coming to town this weekend. All the arrangements are secret at this point which leads me to believe that the Democrats are going to protect Hillary from close scrutiny No hard questions, especially from the local paper. The political editor will just take a press release from a Hillary aide and reprint that as her story for the paper, while going into mental orgasms while Hillary speaks.

  18. The article on the increases in Special operations forces simply reenforced my opinion. I know that Ranger school has to have lowered its standards in the last 20 years because when I was talking to a recruiter a few months ago about going back in, I found out that new Rangers are sent to a much shorter training program than was used 20 years ago, with the expectation that they would get the remainder of their training on the job. When I was on active duty, Ranger school was either 7 or 8 weeks and had a high washout rate. I was offered Ranger school but passed on it in favor of a high tech artillery school (bad choice). Special Forces school had VERY high standards just to get in and even then completion was far from guaranteed. Just to be offered Ranger school, I had to not only have a near maximum score on my Physical fitness test, but also pass a swim test (more water survival than actual swimming) and run over 8 miles with a 40 lb rucksack in boots in a limited amount of time. The last test really messed up my right knee but I finished in the middle of the pack for time.

The very idea of telling every recruit walking through the door that they’ll be qualified as a Ranger or Green Beret in a few months is ludicrous. While quantity is nice, quality is essential. An example of this would be the US Army Bravo detachment that was acting as observers along the main highway from Kuwait to Baghdad during the first Gulf War. Using the skills they had developed from the extensive training, the 6 of them were able to hold off an assault force numbering over 150 for hours until the enemy withdrew and an extraction vehicle (helicopter) could reach them. I don’t know about SEAL school, but it takes over a year to send someone through all of the training to turn the best of recruits into Green Berets.
