Bill Maher Sorry Cheney Wasn’t Assassinated..Will The Left Denounce Him And Not Go On His Program?

By: Pam On: Mar/3/07 - 84 Comments

I doubt it! From NewsBusters,  (video available here ):

Maher: What about the people who got onto the Huffington Post – and these weren’t even the bloggers, these were just the comments section – who said they, they expressed regret that the attack on Dick Cheney failed.

Joe Scarborough: Right.

Maher: Now:

John Ridley: More than regret.

Maher: Well, what did they say?

Ridley: They said “We wish he would die.” I mean, it was (?) hate language.

Barney Frank: They said the bomb was wasted. (laughter and applause)

Maher: That’s a funny joke. But, seriously, if this isn’t China, shouldn’t you be able to say that? Why did Arianna Huffington, my girlfriend, I love her, but why did she take that off right away?

After some discussion about why Huffington should or shouldn’t have taken these comments down, the following occurred:

Ridley: It’s one thing to say you hate Dick Cheney, which applies to his politics. It’s another thing to say, “I’m sorry he didn’t die in an explosion.” And I think, you know:

Maher: But you should be able to say it. And by the way…

Frank: Excuse me, Bill, but can I ask you a question? Do you decide what the topics are for this show?

Maher: Yeah, I decide the topics, they don’t go there.

Frank: But you exercise control over the show the way that she does over her blog.

Maher: But I have zero doubt that if Dick Cheney was not in power, people wouldn’t be dying needlessly tomorrow. (applause)

Scarborough: If someone on this panel said that they wished that Dick Cheney had been blown up, and you didn’t say:

Frank: I think he did.

Scarborough: Okay. Did you say:

Maher: No, no. I quoted that.

Frank: You don’t believe that?

Maher: I’m just saying if he did die, other people, more people would live. That’s a fact.

*****Update III: NewsBusters member and blogger Jon Quixote has all the information concerning the kerfuffle at Huffington Post that Maher and the gang were discussing here.

The Moderate is singing a somewhat different tune on Maher:

My opinion on this is, Free Speech is free speech, the same Free speech rights that allows Ann Coulter to run her mouth and call John Edwards a “faggot”, is the same free speech rights that allows Bill Maher to say what he said. So, either deal with it, or turn off the TV. End of Story.

Yet with Ann:

There needs to be an Apology on her part or action taken by the G.O.P.

Anyone can denounce what these two people say, but it is part of their “act” to say what they do…they both have an audience for such ridiculousness, and as long as the demand is there, the outragious behavior will continue.

1- TPM, huh? I know I’ve been gone for a few weeks on a visit to Europe, but I don’t understand what you are referring to. :???:

As for Maher, don’t don’t support him for suggesting the killing of any American, regardless of their position. I don’t think he was advocating for that though. I think he was suggesting what, from his viewpoint, the result would be “if” it had happened. (which I do not agree with either… the faux war machine will continue with or without Cheney pulling George’s strings)

Ann’s comments, however, are different because they fan flames of hate towards the gay community long struggling for equality. Foriegn Policy issues, and foriegn wars, are not the same as smearing entire populations within the USA.

Where did you get the idea that I was trying to run you into the ground? I merely pointed out a double standard. And any lawyer will tell you that you would need to prove intent, which you have no case for. Nothing was stolen, it was sited under copyright law.

Are you angry becasue I pointed out that you hold one person to one set of standards and in your opinion, even the POTUS should condemn Ann, but with Maher, we should “either deal with it, or turn off the TV. End of Story.”

3- I’ll cede you the point on Maher..

I also agree with you on the gay civil rights point, therefore, for the life of me, why would someone like John A go out of his way to set the cause back? That is what I have a real problem with. He has the legal mind and talent to further the cause, so why get in the mud and try to out gay republicans? His excuse is their “hypocritical” stance..well, I for one don’t walk lock-step with the right, and I don’t think you do with the left, so why is it that he feels the need to hurt the cause? Aren’t they in the same struggle? And do you realistically think that it is just the right that is fighting gay civil rights? I don’t! The votes in Democratic states prove me correct. Look at my state, MI.

“And do you realistically think that it is just the right that is fighting gay civil rights? I don’t! The votes in Democratic states prove me correct. Look at my state, MI.”

Being Democrat does not at all make you left-leaning. Michigan is still very industrial and vote based on labor and economic issues. The liberal population in Michigan is much smaller than the Democratic population. There are many bigots who vote Democrat, just as there are many who vote Republican.

On Maher: It’s perfectly okay what he said about Cheney. Many see Cheney as an unscrupulous and downright evil person, and there is no doubt that he is highly responsible for a lot of the “wrongs” committed by the Bush Administration. Using hate-fueled slurs to refer to a large (and often hated, misunderstood, and disadvantaged) group of people is COMPLETELY different. It is free speech but it is disgusting. Coulter shouldn’t “have” to do anything about it, but it does further show what kind of despicable human being she is.

I disagree that being a dem doesn’t mean you lean to the left. I think in either case, it is the degree to which you lean left or right.

I also disagree with the Cheney comment. It isn’t perfectly okay that he said it. It may be that he dislikes him, but wishing for the death of him is a bit extreme. He is within his right to say it.

    Exactly my point.

Unfortunately, there seems to be so much effort spent on OVER-analizing each and every comment made by the opposing side, trying to find “offensive language” rather than to actually attempt the find the true meaning. In this case:

Why does the rest of the world, including a huge number of Americans feel that the Bush administration has wronged us?

Perhaps if we actually analize this unfortunate truth, we can start making some positive changes.

However, I do not trust our current administration either.

Think for yourself, question authority. This does not translate to undermine authority, simply question it.

Should Hitler’s, Castro’s Musollini’s, Pol Pot’s authority not have been questioned? Should Saddams authority have been questioned? Should the Catholic authority have beened questioned during the Inquisition? Should the radical Muslim authority be questioned for suicide bombings?

Please look through history, learn from it. It is the only way we can move toward living together as one. Please don’t dismiss this as “hippie rhetoric” I can assure you I do not fall into this category.

It is good that you question the Liberal authority. However, do you not also question the Republican? It seems to me that with all things in life, the truth usually lies in the middle. I would hate for you (or anyone) to be ill informed simply due to party loyalty.

“‘I think the puppet on the right shares my beliefs.’ ‘I think the puppet on the left is more to my liking.’ ‘Hey, wait a minute, there’s one guy holding out both puppets!’ ”

So much wasted time on bickering and arguing. Lets overcome our differences and work together. Afterall, our differences are what make this world go ’round, right?

Another funny thing comes to mind, and I’m sure I’ll be blasted for suggesting this: Patriotism is a farce. It only serves to seperate us further, only with temporary boundaries. Look through history and see how many times these “boundries” or “borders” have been renamed, redrawn. Guess what world, we have ALL inherited EVERY last grain of sand on this Earth, regardless of where we happen to be born geographically and in which time period.

I am only in my 20’s. It amazes me that others with so many more years of experience and education don’t see this blatent truth. I don’t think that I am any more educated than the average joe.

Just so you know, I faced down elected politicans in Orange County, CA, before 1995. I questioned the OC supervisors raising taxes to invest in the scheme the only elected Democrat who was the Tax Collector and Treasurer was running. This lead to the bankruptcy of Orange County. You heard of that?

I faced down then Governor, Tom Vilsack, here in Iowa. And, FYI, the Union Goons were circling behind me to give me a “Union Education”, For you who haven’t lived through such things, that is a real, put you in the hospital, beating.

PCD – I apologize for the unfortunate situations you were involved in. However, you must know that there are just as many people from the Right who would do the same horrible things to those from the Left (simply becuase they “disagree”). It isn’t the ideals that make people negativelly act out on their beliefs. These are simply the criminally insane -we have them on both sides.

Peejz – I thank you for your comments. I suppose you are correct in pointing out that I may have picked the wrong forum to discuss my personal beliefs. I think it is simply a shame that most cannot honestly look to and understand both the opinions of the Right & Left. It seems foolhardy and unproductive to ignore valid points raised by an opposing party, simply because of party loyalty. I guess this is simply a reflection of the times we live in.

I’ll no longer bother you with my “naive” way of thinking. Forgive me if I was mistaken in thinking that it is easy for all to look outside the box.

I could care less about Bill Maher. Don’t think he’s a great comedian and he doesn’t do to well with politics either. This is hardly about him. This is about one party blasting the other, just because.

Fact remains, people (including a lot of Americans) posted and believe strongly in these hatefull comments about Dick Cheney. Granted, these particular comments are useless in fighting “the good fight.” However, the comments were still made. Why? Why has the Bush Administration angered SO MANY people. Once we answer this, then we can get somewhere.

I use to consider myself a Conservative. I once was an avid supporter/defender of the Bush administration. I once disagreed with all views of the left (w/o actually researching them), just because. I am also very capable of admitting my faults. I now consider myself an Independent.

I recall a recent interview with the first lady. In this particular interview she stated that “it is so sad that all America sees on television is that one car bombing a day in Iraq.” -I’m sorry, but am I missing something here? One car bombing a day would seem to be to be a HUGE TRAVISTY, each and every day.

Picture this if you will: A car bombing in New York EVERY SINGLE DAY. As Americans, we couldn’t even begin to fathom the complete moral breakdown this would cause.

“Just one car bombing a day” This statement is absolutely insane.

32, so what is your answer, Ryan? Cut and Run? Do you realize that the people behind the carbombings are beyond reasoning with? You either convert to their beliefs or they kill you, period.

PCD – My answer is simple. WORK TOGETHER.

Here it is, very easy: The Right have a lot of good points, and a lot of bad ones. The Left have a lot of good points, and a lot of bad ones. -Do you see where I’m going with this?

Useless bickering aside, lets WORK TOGETHER. Perhaps if we really made an HONEST effort to understand both sides we can put the good ideas together and drop the bad.

You mention that our enemy is unable to reason with. However, judging by your responses, I would put you in the same category. (it’s unfortunate that I feel I have to point this out, but) Of course, I am not calling you a terrorist, I am simply suggesting that by completely denouncing an alternate point of view (w/o really taking it into consieration) you are being unreasonable. This is counterproductive.

34, ryan, you are just an idiot. Sitting down, singing Kumbya is not going to solve problems. You sit there in your private nirvana and expect everyone else to take the same drugs as you do.

You cannot see that people who WILL walk in to your circle with a few pounds of dynamite and a detonator will not accept anything short of either you taking their point of view entirely or blowing you up.

That is a sad fact that you are unwilling to accept. How do work with that? Surrender? Die because you can’t stop singing?

    Get real, ryan.

  52. Ryan
    March 5, 2007 - 01:33 PM on March 5th, 2007

PCD – This is the response I expected. It’s quite unfortunate really.
Rather than to offer an intelligent rebuttal, you attack me personally. Quite hypocritical I might add.

Perhaps you are right. Perhaps the answer is to attack/destroy anything and anyone we THINK may be a potential danger to American ideals. Is this how you would like your country to be viewed? I guess, at least YOU would be safe, right?

This is what I get from your responses, tell me if I’m wrong: You will not hear anything the Left (or anyone opposing your view) has to say because they are just plain wrong.

This is a very unfortunate characterstic in a lot of people, including the Bush Administration. This, by the way, is what got us into the debacle we call Operation Iraqi Freedom. While the rest of the world said, “maybe we shouldn’t topple a government that we don’t agree with and impose our own” The Bush Administration decided (oh thats right, they got bad intelligence from GBR) Iraq had weapons of mass destruction pointed right at us. What did we find?

Picture this: Communist China feels that Democracy no longer works, and therefore, decides to topple the U.S. Government and impose there own. I would like to think that I would put up just as much of a fight.

Continue to live your sheltered life. Continue to fight the Left (and the rest of the world), just because. Continue to hear only your voice. One day you will have the sad realization that the rest of the world has evolved and you are left alone, arguing a mute point.

Singing Kumbaya, as you call it, is simply my way of suggesting that we start working together.

    2. You state that I have no principiles and consider giving up everyones freedom. There is nothing even remotely similar to this observation in any of my responses. I would welcome examples.

Yet again, no intelligent correspondence, just more attacks. There are many of you on both sides of the view who inhibit the progress of not only American politcs, but World politics as well.

I took friends to a taping of Jay Leno show in February 2006. Bill Maher and Shawn White(just back with his gold metal win in the olympics)were guest. During a break after Shawn was interviewed, Maher, feeling ignored grabed White’s gold metal and held it up to the audience and said “this looks like a Cock Ring”. No one laughed at this druggie and it showed his disrespect for anything good and mora in Amercia. If the DEA followed this Ass around for a week, they would know a lot about drug use in his circle.

32- Why does the left hate GWB so much? Well let’s work from 2000 on up to the present time. IMO, they hate him because they lost in 2000 and rather than face the legal reality of the situation, they persist in saying he stole an election…the list goes on and on..they hate because they can hate and they are not willing to entertain any other thought other than death and destruction to him and his administration. Burying our heads and pretending that we can talk out our differences with terrorists is naive and just plain stupid. This country ignored all the warnings for too long and we have paid a price and will continue to do so.

The hypocricy of the left saying we should get out of Iraq, yet go into Darfur? What, to fight another branch of the terrorists we are fighting in Iraq? Crazy..

Believe it or not, every problem in the world is not the fault of Bush..he is easy to blame, but kinda stupid to listen to the rhetoric….

Let’s look at Walter Reed..to listen to people, this too is all/only GWB’s fault. Well, he has been in office for 6 years and it is now finally being addressed, but my father is 73, and he didn’t hear anything new that he hadn’t heard all his life…yet we have CLAIRE MCCASKILL (D-MO)trotting out with legislation and making this claim:

MR. MATTHEWS: We begin tonight with Senator Claire McCaskill of Missouri.

Senator McCaskill, when did you learn about the horror stories over at Walter Reed and the way our guys with amputated legs and arms and everything else are being treated over there?

SEN. MCCASKILL: I was actually in Washington Sunday morning, because we’d been there for the vote on Saturday afternoon, and read the paper and physically felt ill. And, you know, I don’t think Americans should be distracted by this story that came out today about somebody in charge of fund-raising. …

Found out on a Sunday huh? Yet when she was on O’Reilly last week, she still hadn’t made it there, she sent an aide…and that is the problem…it is the job of our elected representatives to know what is going on…They appropriate the money and should have started taking care of the problem oh, say maybe 70 years ago!

(It is beyond the time for term limits and age limits on these people!)

So Ryan, I would say that there are legitimate gripes about Bush and Co., but to justify someone calling for any of their deaths is just silly…. Sometimes all it takes is to listen and that is something that I find lacking in this country..

As stated previously, I would consider myself an Independent, for many reasons (which I won’t go into at this time). I would like to think of myself as a practical thinker, and therefore, would certainly never entertain such hateful and useless comments.

When I do hear comments such as which were reiterated by Bill Maher (which it seems many share), I want to understand why these individuals feel so strongly. This is what I feel is important. To actually hear out the other side (this goes for everyone), and not close our minds because we assume right off that bat all they want to do is spin.

I know its a tall order, but we have to start somewhere.

Again, thank you for taking the time to respond.

    PCD,

Unfortunately, you continue to miss my point. I will try (for the last time) to make it clear.

Take a deep breath, no one is attacking you or your views:

    1. I do not hate our President and/or Vice President. However, I am not impressed with their inability to answer straight forward questions posed by the American public (you know, the people who voted him into office).

    2. I do not support terrorists or their radical views. I realize that these individuals are criminally insane and cannot be reasoned with.

    3. I am not in a “blind nirvana.” What I am doing is making helpful suggestions that we must try to work together to solve this terrorist problem. I understand that terrorists do not want to listen (we cannot work with these people). HOWEVER, as for the rest of us, practical, reasonable thinkers -WE NEED TO WORK TOGETHER DESPITE OUR DIFFERENCES.

I understand that you wish to go through life pointing fingers and placing blame on opposing viewpoints.

Perhaps I am here to help you realize that this is a miserable unproductive way to live life.

PCD – I wish you the best in life. Please try to gain patience when talking with others. As far as #2: My suggestion is to work together (you and me) in order to come up with a solution. Unfortunately, I do not have all the answers, or a solution for this much bigger problem. I have a suggestion though. However, it seems you are not interested in working with someone with an opposing view point, just because. Seems extremely childish.

You should try UNDERSTANDING other view points, rather than to just challenge them. Once you have something important or meaningful to say, feel free. Who knows, you may even make a positive difference one day.

Okay, I’m going to make a few comments on this.

Ryan, you are a prime example as to why Churchill said that “If you’re not a liberal at 20, you don’t have a heart and if you’re not a conservative at 40 you don’t have a brain.” Don’t take that as an insult, it wasn’t meant that way. You are young and really haven’t fully developed an understanding of the situation of running this country, especially during a time of war. Hell, I’m in my 40s and served in the military and I still don’t know everything that goes on. However, I do know that there are times when it is absolutely essential that the executive branch withhold information from the general population. When at war, it is necessary to NOT tell the enemy all of our secrets. I am certain that you are intelligent enough to understand that.

While you admit that we can not possibly deal with the terrorists, you fail to state an opinion other than to work together to stop them. You seem to fail to realize that the old adage that “the only good terrorist is a dead terrorist” does apply. Dead terrorists do not fly planes into buildings, blow up cars, cut people’s heads off on videotape, etc etc etc. As for your response to the First Lady’s comments about only hearing about a car bombing in Iraq, did you ever think about why she would say that? Could it be that we have been rebuilding an infrastructure that is in a woeful state of disrepair that is never reported? That we’ve brought safe drinking water to people who have never had it? How often do you hear about these kind of things?

On the Katrina situation, I liken Fema to a reconstructive surgeon. If you cut your hand do you:
    a. put a bandaid on it and see if that takes care of it? (local government)
    b. go to an urgent care center to have it stitched if necessary?(state government)
    c. go directly to a reconstructive surgeon whether necessary or not? (federal government)
    d. All of the above, as necessary?

Mayor Nagin failed to act to evacuate the city, AND refused to prepare the Superdome for use as an emergency shelter. He had an emergency response plan but failed to carry it out.

Governor Blanco was advised to activate the National Guard and offered assistance preparing for Katrina by Florida, she refused to do either.

Yet, despite the local and state government refusing to act to prevent loss of life, the federal government has been blamed for the resulting chaos. One thing everyone fails to account for is that FEMA is responsible for more than just New Orleans. FEMA responded faster to New Orleans than it has to hurricanes in southern Florida, but you don’t hear the Floridians whining do you? Why? Because they plan ahead for hurricane season, they actually execute their plans, and then take care of as much of the damage as they can THEMSELVES.

Personally, rather than getting wound up over the deaths of soldiers during a time of war, I’d much rather see the left get off their asses and actually act to stop the deaths of Americans at the hands of criminals in our cities. More Americans die every year at the hands of illegal aliens than at the hands of terrorists, but the liberals demand that nothing be done to stop them from entering the country. More Americans die at the hands of criminals than die at the hands of terrorists, but the liberals scream that we mustn’t execute or severely punish them for their actions. We must provide them with the very rights that they have taken from their victims. Why can’t the liberals get wound up about something they can change and save the lives of thousands of Americans annually? Why don’t the liberals march down the streets complaining about the thousands of innocent Americans who die at the hands of violent career criminals instead of the handful of criminals who die at the hands of law enforcement? How about a march demanding that anyone wanting to enter the US have a criminal and medical background check to prevent crime and epidemics? Wouldn’t that be a reasonable expectation for someone wanting to come here to improve their lives? Wouldn’t doing something like this be considered a reasonable example of the “working together” that you want? While I realize that you feel that there should be a one world government, you would NOT like the results. You would not want to live in a third world. Socialism/communism is a debunked hypothesis. It has failed repeatedly. Why? Because NOONE wants to work their asses off without being rewarded for their efforts. It reduces output to the lowest common denominator. Noone is willing to produce more while receiving no greater reward for their efforts than the least productive worker.

Kind of like trying to make a marriage work without communication. I made be only 27 years of age, but I do realize this to be truth, through personal experience. And you know what, it worked.
