Liberal Democrats Revolt on Iraq Spending Bill, Pelosi Has A Big Problem!

By: Pam On: Mar/6/07 -

The Politico has this piece which I encourage you to read(I clipped from the piece):

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is facing a full-blown revolt from liberal House Democrats over the $98 billion Iraq supplemental bill, according to Democratic insiders. Anywhere between 50 to 75 Democrats are now threatening to vote against the bill because it doesn’t go far enough toward ending the war, including setting a date certain for withdrawal of U.S. combat forces from Iraq, said the sources. Pelosi and Democratic leaders are expected to postpone markup of the Iraq bill in the House Appropriations Committee by at least a week in order to buy time to resolve the matter.

Pelosi has a bit of a problem here. If the Democratic leadership puts a date certain for withdrawal in the bill, there’s a chance that enough Blue Dogs Democrats would defect and vote with Republicans, meaning the bill could down for defeat outright. While that might suit anti-war lawmakers and groups. the political consequences could be disastrous for the party. It would end the Iraq war by default since there would be no more money for combat operations, and Republicans would punish the Democrats for years over it.

But if she leaves out a date-certain withdrawal, Pelosi may lose her left, and that’s her power base, both within the Democratic Caucus and the party at large. She faces a very ticklish task sorting the whole thing out, although the senior Democrat lawmaker isn’t worried. Pelosi “will get everyone on board at the end of the day,” the lawmaker insisted.

Meanwhile, Delay claims the Democrats don’t have the stones to cut off the funds:

When the Iraq resolution passed in October 2002, the country supported the war. Democrats then worried that supporting President Bush would make the crackpots at MoveOn.org mad, thus hurting them come election time. But at the same time, they worried that opposing Bush would make middle America mad, thus hurting them at election time. As usual, it was all about them, and they wanted it both ways. It’s always politics with them.

They wanted to position themselves to take credit when and if the war went swimmingly, while at the same time being able to criticize the president if things went badly. They didn’t vote for the war (or the USA Patriot Act, for that matter) because they believed in it, but because it was popular and they wanted people to like them. Their position hasn’t changed in four years. The same craven logic explains the treacherous idiocy behind their nonbinding war resolution. Now that the war is unpopular, they want to distance themselves from the mission and stick it in Bush’s face.

But in a million years Democrats wouldn’t have the guts to cut off funding for the mission. On the chance that Gen. David Petraeus’s surge works, they want to be able to take the credit for it. In that party, guts have been replaced with calculation.

This is an outrage! I am angered by the refusal of Speaker Pelosi to follow the mandate of voters who put her in her position for the sole purpose of enacting progressive ideas and priorities! Progressives all over know the first order of business is to cut off all funding for the illegal war. Then shift that funding to social services, raise taxes, and begin to outlaw private ownership of cars. We must reduce our carbon footprints!
War generates huge amounts of greenhouse gases, therefore it must be eliminated. Surely once we leave Iraq the insurgents will lay down their arms and focus on reducing greenhouse gas generation! I am confident Mr. Muqtada al Sadr will become a progressive leader in Iraq, and make signing the Kyoto protocols a priority!
We must now follow the leadership of world-class progressives like Hillary Clinton, the vast majority of scientists and leaders who have proven that the CO2 emissions of Americans are destroying the planet! WE MUST STOP TIS NOW!!!
