Pelosi Refuses To Support The Brits Because She Is So Excited About Her Spring Break In Syria

Powerline:Yesterday we wrote about Nancy Pelosi’s refusal to allow House Resolution 267, a call for the release of the captured British sailors and marines who are being held in Iran, to be voted on by the House of Representatives. Despite pressure from Republican Congressmen, Pelosi remained adamant and the House adjourned today without considering the resolution:

The omission by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., is being noted by some Republicans, who say they should have gotten the chance to join the Senate in denouncing Tehran’s bold actions.”I am very disappointed that the speaker chose not to act,” said Rep. Charles Dent, R-Pa.

“I believe it’s important for us as Americans to show our solidarity with the Britons,” he added in a phone interview Friday. “The British are our closest allies, and I think we have to stand next to them in a moment like this.”

The Senate on Thursday, before adjourning for its one-week break, passed a resolution condemning the act “in the strongest possible terms” and calling for the sailors “immediate, safe and unconditional release.”

Pelosi’s spokesman Brendan Daly said the speaker was reluctant to weigh in on the incident without knowing that such a message would do more good than harm. Daly said the British government had not asked Congress to try to pressure Tehran.

“The leadership discussed it and agreed that inserting Congress into an international crisis while ongoing would not be helpful,” Daly said.

She hesitates to weigh in because she wasn’t asked to?  She was asked not to go to Syria, but that is where she is spending her spring brake!

  1. Is anyone really surprised that a San Francisco liberal Democrat would refuse to support an ally’s military? They won’t even support OUR military.

  2. “Pelosi Refuses To Support The Brits Because She Is So Excited About Her Spring Break In Syria”

Sounds like spinning facts and creating your own reality there.

I don’t know what the schedule last week was like for the House, but regardless, yes I’m sure Nancy’s planned trip to Syria with a delegation of other representatives could have played a part in this resolution not being brought to a vote in the full House. Syria and Iran are have close ties and share a mutual security pact– meaning if Iran is attacked, Syria will respond to defend them.

So maybe some good can come from Nancy’s visit. Maybe she can forge some common ground that the Bush administration has refused to do for most of it’s 6 years in power and start to rebuild diplomatic relations destroyed by the Bush “you’re either with us or you’re with the terrorists” mentality.

The House, rattling a resolution with no teeth doesn’t lend itself to diplomacy.

p.s. I also found the Freeper’s comments on this story hysterical. “I hope they take her hostage.” etc, etc. Nice. So many right-wing nutjobs seem to equate Syria with the destablized Iraq we created. It’s a testament to how ignorant those on the right who open their mouths are about the geo-political and security issues are in different parts of the Middle East.

  3. 2- So you agree that Nancy was more interested in her own interests to be bothered by the Brits. Let’s look at Syria.  They are the launching pad for 85-90% of the suicide bombers in Iraq.  Assad and his terror apparatus are also the prime suspects in the assassination of Rafiq Hariri, whose pro-western political heirs are currently deadlocked with Hezbollah in Lebanon. If she’s not loyal enough to her own country to refrain from handing one of its biggest enemies a propaganda windfall, you’d think she’d at least be decent enough not to legitimize a suspected killer under UN investigation by doing meet and greets with him.

  4. 1- Ouch! Good point, hadn’t thought of that!

  5. None of this is unusual or even surprising. The Democrite leadership has openly demonstrated its support for our enemies by first undermining Bush and the WOT almost from the beginning, then trying to turn the war in Iraq into another Vietnam. They have become willing, eager, open allies of our enemies. They are doing everything they can to ensure America’s defeat. They long ago crossed the line from dissent to treason, imo.

  13. I would like to recommend some reading for the flight back to these congressional morons. It’s article one and article two of the Constitution. It flat out says that negotiation of treaties is the purview of the executive branch, NOT the leglislative branch. They are involved in activities that are patently wrong and potentially illegal.
